Johnny was a great guide! He showed us the red eyed riverside frog, a glass frog, the two fingered sloth, and the pygmy rainforest frog. We even saw a scorpion that glowed under a UV light! Johnny was friendly and answered the many questions the group had. He also told us about the plants and trees in the refuge. He was extremely knowledgeable and shared his experience of conservation with the group. A major highlight was that he used his monoculars to take photos of the wildlife for everyone on the tour. I would recommend this tour!

Michael Suarez was an excellent guide. You could tell that he was very knowledgeable and passionate about the wildlife he was describing. We were lucky and got to see so many amazing animals on our tour!

We were lucky enough to have Luis as our guide. He was amazing! Friendly, knowledgeable and was considerate of the forest. We were able to see more wildlife than I expected to see. Pit vipers, armadillos, several species of frogs and even a few beautiful birds nesting. My daughter was stung by a bee, which is no reflection of the property or the tour in any way. It’s a known risk of being in the jungle at night. A minor bee sting and wasn’t a concern. I bring this up, because our guide was equipped with a fist aid kit and showed compassion and had kind words to make sure we all knew it’s a standard bee sting and how to treat it for comfort. Well done Luis! If we are back in the area, I will certainly take another tour with Luis!

You go into a wildlife tour knowing you may not see much wildlife, however Johnny the guide has incredible ears and eyes and is able to find a huge variety of interesting flora and fauna. Even if I'd stood looking for a year I wouldn't have found some of the insect's, frogs, tarantulas, snakes, scorpions and birds he identified. And a sloth! All this while being an engaging guide who keep the whole group interested. Also it was lovely to learn about life in Monteverde and local culture. I was little nervous about waking around the forest in the dark, but Johnny made us feel safe and comfortable.

Exciting night tour with amazing guide Johnny. The weather was not ideal for animal watching, but Johnny still did a great job finding multiple frogs, vipers, birds, and insects. I would definitely recommend hiring a guide, or it’s almost impossible to spot wild animals at night.

We were excited about the prospect of seeing wildlife in Monteverde. We were charged an additional $15 each at the door to enter the park, it is advertised as $13 online. Additionally, our guide was 30 minutes late. Despite these obstacles, we came in with an open mind. The tour did not include much educational information and wildlife was limited. We understand that they can’t control nature, but everything seemed chaotic in terms of the exploration. There were guides all over the place wandering this small area, and sometimes we were just left in the dark for long stretches of time. I think you would be better off exploring Monteverde on your own. This wasn’t worth the ticket price.

We sincerely apologize for the delayed start and any confusion regarding the entrance fee difference. Park entrance fees are managed independently by the reserve administration and may vary due to updated local taxes or operational adjustments. We always aim to communicate pricing as clearly as possible.
Regarding moments when you may have felt briefly unattended, during a night tour it is sometimes necessary for the guide to step a short distance ahead to carefully locate wildlife in areas with limited access or low visibility. This is done for safety reasons and to ensure the group can observe animals without disturbance. Rather than bringing the entire group into potentially unsafe terrain, the guide may first verify the sighting before inviting guests to approach.
Night wildlife exploration in the Monteverde Cloud Forest can appear dynamic, especially when multiple certified naturalist guides are working in the same protected area. However, our focus is always on responsible wildlife observation, safety, and interpretation.

This was a poorly managed tour. The pick up was late but more importantly, we were expecting Johnny to be our tour guide based on what we signed up for. Looks like he got busy with overbooking and went with another tour and sublet this to another tour guide. We did not start till after 6 and were very disappointed with the effort he put in to make this tour worthwhile. I totally understand that wild life sightings are different all the time and sometimes not visible at all. But to just ask the 4 of us to turn off flash lights and discuss china Costa Rica oil deal and other irrelevant topics in the dark for 15 min plus, twice, was a total waste of time. I was very scared the whole time worrying about something poisoned nearby since we were standing in total darkness. Despite these breaks, he turned around earlier whereas other guides kept going and were constantly looking around enthusiastically. We finished early as well. Waste of money.

First, we sincerely apologize for the delayed pickup and for the disappointment regarding your guide expectations. We understand that you booked this tour under the assumption that Johnny would be the guide, and we recognize the importance of this when choosing a small-group wildlife experience. While our tours are always led by certified local naturalist guides, scheduling adjustments may occasionally happen due to operational logistics. That said, we take responsibility for not communicating this clearly enough in advance.
Regarding the pace and route of the walk, our guides prioritize guest safety, trail conditions, and responsible wildlife observation. The short moments without flashlights are sometimes used to allow guests to listen for nocturnal sounds and improve wildlife spotting opportunities, however we understand that it may not have felt valuable or comfortable for you, and we truly regret that.
We would also like to clarify—politely and transparently—that during your tour, our staff experienced repeated challenging behavior and disrespectful communication toward multiple team members, including the receptionist, driver, and guide. Much of the interaction remained focused on requesting a refund while the activity was still in progress, which created an uncomfortable environment for the group and made it difficult for our team to deliver the calm and educational experience we strive for.
Even so, we genuinely regret that you left feeling disappointed. Guest satisfaction is important to us, and we will use this feedback to improve communication, timing coordination, and overall experience flow for future travelers.

Johnny was a good, passionate local who knew the hilly trails from his childhood. He navigated us with determination to find frogs and even a viper snake 🐍! We saw birds, a scorpion, and two different spiders.

This nite tour was uninspiring. We’ve done others in which we’ve seen far more animals- if this were the only issue I wouldn’t blame the tour operator. Johnny, while he believes himself to be comical, was insulting and abrasive. Most jokes were made at the expense of tourists. These guides would do well to remember that we’re just in the country to learn and enjoy the environment and culture.

Nice tour on our first night in Monteverde. Johnny was a knowledgeable guide who made sure we saw some interesting things, which ca be tough on a hit or miss nature walk. He helped take some fun photos through the spotting scope.

This was cheaper than other night walks but had good reviews so we went on it. Unfortunately we didn’t have Jonny but another guide who didn’t seem to know the route (took us along a track for 30 minutes before realising we’d gone wrong) eventually turned around and followed other groups through the forest and saw some animals bit disappointing overall.

We had a tour with Jainner who spotted many animals! The group ended up with just us and we had a personal experience trying to find all the animals in the night forest. We saw a porcupine, baby snake, a frog, a big bird and various insects. Definitely recommend!

This walk around as night starts to fall is a must-do. You see the animals, that you might have seen in the day, sleeping and you see the nocturnal animals come to life. We listened to all the wonderful information, we felt like we had really learnt something different to our other guided trips in other places we did because of the different animals we saw. We're really glad we didn't skip this experience.

This was our least favorite tour of our trip. We had a last minute substitution of our guide, and while he was very nice, he had little information to share. Most importantly do NOT GO if it is likely to rain. It poured, the tour went on 'as planned'...we got soaked despite our rain gear and saw very little other than some insects and a snake. Tour should have been cancelled.

Johnny was our tour guide and he was fantastic! We ventured out into the jungle with one common passion, frogs! We told him we have a special liken to the little guys and he took special care to find us some cool frogs to see! We also got the opportunity to see some funky bugs we don’t commonly see including a GIANT stick bug! I mean the thing was massive! Thanks Johnny and night walk tour coordinators for such a fun night! Highly recommend!
