Jean Carlos is the real deal! We got lucky that we two were the only clients that day, and he customized the tour to our liking. I saw my dream bird, the resplendent quetzal! Jean Carlos is extremely knowledgeable about the local environment and genuinely passionate about birds. You won’t regret booking this activity.

Juan Carlos is a fantastic guide. He really cares about your wishes. We saw more than 50 species of birds during our tour! Thank you soo much!

We met in a carpark - the most unlikely of places! Wrap up warm but with layers as it is cold very early in the morning in Monte Verde. Plenty birds to see to our surprise. We then moved to the bird reserve - however we were then asked to pay to go in, which we had not known we would have to do. You need to be fit as the terrain is steep here and good walking shoes a must. We saw a good amount of birds but could no way keep up with the guide and other experienced birders on the tour. You could bring your own binnoculars or hire theirs. The guide did bring a scope too. The morning was enjoyable but to make the best of it you need experience. The birds move like lightening and are well camouflaged. The cafe at the end served great food - not included. The gift shop had some quality items at great prices. We had a good morning

Jean Carlo, thank you so much for the birding tour of the Monteverde Curi Cancha area. It was such an amazing experience through such a beautiful area of the world. The wife and I are very grateful for your passion!

Fabulous Bird Tour. Our guide, Raul, was amazing. Super knowledgeable, friendly, patient, and an interested birder himself. I recommend this to anyone visiting who is interested in birds or wildlife.

A bit of walking but doable
Guided Tour recommended, it takes experience to spot the birds
We got lucky and saw 70 different birds

The tour with Jean Carlo was incredible. We saw just over 70 species and although I love birding, we wouldn't have seen 1/3 of that without him. He is very knowledgeable, fun, and kind. It was an excellent experience and I highly recommend it!
Be sure to bring some snacks along with you! Some people in our group did not and I think they were very hungry by time the tour ended.

Jean Carlo is a birder's birder. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in seeing birds, but especially to avid birders who might want a cheat code in learning the birds around Monteverde. Jean is very talented, passionate and a great hang. It was just a really great morning of birding with an awesome and talented birder. My partner is a new birder and she had a really fantastic time looking at chlorophonias and euphonias and tanagers and getting into the weeds about everything we were seeing. Thanks Jean

Our guide was friendly, enthusiastic and very experienced. We had fun and saw lots of birds. We would never have seen half these birds without his guiding. Highly recommend this tour.

We were first time birders. Jean Carlos gave us a fantastic learning experience about Costa Rican birds. Saw more than 45 species, took great pictures using a combination of his and our equipment, and learned about how to locate many kinds of birds in two different locations. He was patient, but was constantly telling us about the birds we were seeing.

Victor our tour guide was incredible! We saw so many birds that we otherwise would not have seen without him and he made it such an amazing experience! Highly recommend!

I would give Carlos and his birding tour a 100 out of 10, if Viator had that option. I am a birder - I really loved the tour. My friends that went with me were not birders, but by the end of the tour (particularly their time with Carlos) they became birders. His enthusiasm and excitement for birding is contagious. My friends were genuinely sad for the tour to end in the afternoon.
We saw over 60 species of birds and Carlos' knowledge of bird behavior, color patterns, and calls was extremely impressive. I can't say enough positive things about him, his personality and this tour.

This is our first bird watching tour and we got to see 60 species of birds. Jean Carlo is a great and experienced guide who can spot so many birds. He can tell the bird species right away when a small bird flies by. We're amazed at his knowledge. He has a scope which we can see some birds up close, way better than the binoculars we brought. We took our time to walk slowly through the trails and there's no rush at all. After the tour, he also shared the list of birds we saw and the pictures/videos he took with his scope. It's a fun experience. Highly recommended.

This was a fantastic experience and Juan Carlos was an excellent guide. He was extremely knowledgable, very helpful and great company.

Jean Carlo was an excellent guide who communicated well before the tour to find out which birds we wanted to see. The tour was well paced and as there were only 4 people, Jean Carl was able to spend time with each couple. He was particularly patient in helping someone take photos on their phone.
We were all able to view the birds on his scope and he took lots of photos and videos which he then shared with us, alongside the list of 35 birds which we’d been lucky enough to see during our morning tour.
Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

Wonderful birdwatching experience at Curi-Cancha Reserve: quetzals, toucans, different species of hummingbirds - 35 different kinds of birds! Juan Carlo was a fantastic guide; so knowledgeable! Recognized the birds by sight (flying and hidden in thick foliage) and by their songs. Loved it!

Derniert was an incredible guide. We saw 40+ species on our tour, and there’s no way we would have spotted half of them without his assistance. We noticed many of the other guides on the trail would stop to consult Derniert on some species; he seemed to be a well-regarded expert. We were also very thankful for the limit on our group size. We passed some groups with 8-10 people trying to take turns looking in the spotting scope, and we felt very lucky that the two of us had a guide and scope to ourselves. Amazing trip!

We loved this bird watching tour. Denis was an amazing guide. Very knowledgeable about both the birds and plants of Monteverde. He was also very skillful at capturing pictures in his scope for us. We saw at least one example of each: trogons, motmots, toucanets, and quetzals - in addition to many beautiful songbirds.

Kevin was an incredible guide and we saw so many new birds. He was amazing at hearing different birds and spotting them. We saw resplendent quetzals and a northern emerald toucanette and euphorias and chlorophonias to name a few. Kevin was enthusiastic and made the experience wonderful. I highly recommend this tour.

Had an amazing morning with Jean Carlo. We spotted 43 species of birds including 3 quetzals. Jean Carlo was a very knowledeable, passionate guide and environmentalist. He was very engergetic, working hard to find new spiecies for us to see throughout the whole morning. One of the highlights of our trip to Costa Rica. We would highly recommend Jean Carlo.

Highly recommend this trip. Jean was very enthusiastic throughout the entire experience. Very polite, patient, professional and extremely knowledgeable. I told him that I would like to go to the hummingbird garden and so he tailored our experience to accommodate this. He took photos for us as our cameras were not really up to the job. He also asked us what birds we would like to see, and we saw all of them. Very good with communication and messaged me promptly before the experience to answer my questions. It was the best experience of our holiday, and it was a pleasure to be in his company.

We were able to see 52 species of birds. We rented binoculars and our guide would set up a spotting scope as well. We were able to see the male and female quetzal as well as a keel-billed toucan and many hummingbirds and brown jays. Some ground birds like a Chiriqui dove for instance. Jean Carlos is able to spot, name and help you also see the many beautiful birds of Costa Rica (endemic and migratory). We also took pictures and videos through his spotting scope. We now have an increased appreciation for bird watching. A guided tour is the way to go. Experts like Jean Carlos make it very enjoyable to go birding.

Jean Carlos was so so fantastic. The bird watching tour was really wonderful. He was great at spotting birds, has decades of wonderful knowledge of the areas ecosystems and was super friendly and kind. He was super patient with the kids we had with us, great at setting up the spotting scope so we could see the birds better and great at helping us spot them. He helped us take pictures and it was great to hear of his passion for the birds. 100% would recommend. We learned so much and would never have seen so many things without him.

This was a fantastic tour with Jean Carlo! He’s the most knowledgeable bird guide I have used. We saw several endemic species. Jean Carlo knows where the hotspots are around Monteverde, we had an amazing time. We had such good birding in the morning we asked if he was available in the afternoon. We ended the day with over 70 species, truly a remarkable day. Trogan, Toucanet, Manikin, Barber, and Chlorophonia we just a few of the many highlights of the day.
Jeffrey_S, Dec 2024
Jean Carlo knows his birds! He also knows the best places to visit in regards to the weather. We visited Finca Ecologica San Luis and were blown away by the number of birds there. Highly recommended!

What other travelers should know is that Viator is just a booking agency at the top of the value chain. Rather than book through Viator, other travelers should simply wait until they get to Monteverde to book with one of the many birding guides who will charge less than half of Viator's fee. Also, our guide (who was perfectly fine) took us to a site where we had to shell out an additional $100 to get anywhere near the birds.

Jean Carlos is friendly and knowledgeable. We really enjoyed the tour. We recommend this tour to those who want to do bird watching.

Denis was the man! He was very knowledgeable and he showed us so many cool birds and other wildlife. He was a real enthusiast and it’s clear he loves his job. 100% worth the money. *** any tour that doesn’t start at 6 am is a waste in my opinion*** most of the action happened from 5:30-8:30 am, when the wildlife is most active.

This was such a special experience. We came during rainy season and it was still incredible. While we didn’t see a quetzal (not the season for them in Monteverde) it was so fun to see all the other species of birds. So many hummingbirds. Our guide Derniert was amazing. So knowledgeable about not only birds but much of Costa Rica in general. He spoke flawless English and was very patient with our questions as amateur birdwatchers. Highly recommend! Also recommend bringing a good set of binoculars to look at things on your own while he is scouting for birds!

This bird watching excursion left a huge impact on me, chiefly due to Jean Carlo’s passion for birds and his deep knowledge about the sound and sight of many many species of birds.
This is the best thing we did during our stay in Monteverde. I highly recommend it.
