Jason was an absolute gem of a guide! He was incredibly knowledgeable & eager to show/teach us all he could. He would go out of his way to try to find us wildlife...we were even lucky enough to see the quetzal & the rare sunbittern! I would highly recommend this experience! The cloud forest is an unforgettable experience!

Amazing day seeing quetzals, owls, bell birds, hummingbirds, toucans, and other bird species, including some rare ones, very professional guide too who helped me take great photos.

Thank you for your feedback!
A complete waste of time — unprofessional and dishonest.
The tour never even happened. I booked in advance and double-checked with the operator the night before to confirm. Because of the early meetup time, I woke up at 5:00 AM and paid for a private taxi to reach the reserve by 6:00 AM. Only after arriving was I told at 6:05 AM that the tour was delayed until 7:00 AM.
After waiting at the park for nearly an hour, I discovered that the operator had passed me off to a completely different guide who wasn't even running a birdwatching tour. When I contacted the operator for an explanation, they only until then casually informed me that the tour required a minimum of two people to run.
They absolutely should have told me this before I wasted all my time and the extra money on transport.
Unfortunately I only have one day in Monteverde and was looking forward to birdwatching. But then I booked with them.
This operator lacks integrity and lied to me throughout the process.
Avoid them.

Dear Sheng,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We are truly sorry for the disappointment and frustration you went through. Please accept our sincere apologies.
We completely understand how upsetting it must have been to wake up so early, arrange transportation, and look forward to a special birdwatching experience, only to have your plans disrupted. We recognize that this affected your limited time in Monteverde, and we sincerely regret that.
Unfortunately, due to a communication error on our side, we did not inform you in advance that this shared tour requires a minimum number of participants to operate. That was our responsibility, and we apologize for not handling the situation better. We also regret that the alternative arrangement was not communicated clearly, which understandably caused further confusion.
We take your comments seriously and are already reviewing our procedures to ensure this does not happen again. Our goal is always to provide honest communication and memorable experiences, and we are deeply sorry that we fell short in your case.
We truly appreciate your feedback, as it helps us improve. We wish you all the best and hope that, despite this unfortunate experience, you were still able to enjoy some of the natural beauty that Monteverde has to offer.
Sincerely,
Monteverde Nature Tours
Amazing.. Thanks to Jason expertise on birds, we were able to see more birds which we would have never see without him.. consider damn Lucky as we were able to spot the resplendent quetzel, which made my trip to costarica and birdwatching worth memorable..

Thank you for sharing!
Jason was a wonderful guide! He was my first birding guide in Costa Rica but I went on to have several more in other parts of the country and Jason was the best by far. His knowledge of birds and their calls/songs was very impressive. I saw 50 species of birds on this tour I booked through Viator (I ended up being solo) and then I booked two additional outings with Jason - birding to Santa Elena cloud forest and a wildlife night walk, both of which were excellent. Jason knew I wanted to see a Quetzal and when we hadn’t found one by the end of our second birding outing, he went out of his way to take me to one more spot where he thought he might find one, and HE DID! Lovely experience, I’ve already recommended him to a friend who wants to go birding in Costa Rica. Definitely would reach out to Jason again if I was in the area.

Thank you Emily, thanks for being fo kind!
Wow! What an extraordinary morning at Curi Cancha Reserve with Jason! His knowledge of birds and where to find them is exceptional. He also has a deep knowledgeable about many of the plants that we passed between seeing and hearing birds. We were able to observe the behaviors of many bird species in the early stages of mating season. We were also very fortunate to see a Bell Bird and the Resplendent Quetzal. Jason was really easy to spend time with, and he clearly has a deep love of the land and the flora and fauna. We enjoyed his company so much, we asked if he would guide us on a night tour!

Thanks a lot for your words!
We saw so many beautiful birds that we would never have seen on our own. Jean Bonilla is an amazing birder and helped us to see things we couldn't even imagine before.
Response from Host, Mar 2026
We are so glad about your amazing experience! Jean is a great birder!
I had a great experience on the Monteverde Birdwatching Experience. Everything ran smoothly and was exactly as promised, which is really what you want when booking a tour.
The experience itself was well organised and relaxed. I’m not a hardcore birder, but I enjoy watching birds and learning along the way, and this tour struck a nice balance. I learned a lot about the forest and where to look for different species, and we were lucky enough to see plenty, including many woodcreepers, hummingbirds, redstarts and more and to get some good photos.
While the experience overall was solid, it was even better thanks to my guide, Beto. His genuine passion for birdlife and the forest really added to the day, and he was simply enjoyable to spend time with.
Overall, it was a very positive experience, delivered as advertised and made memorable by excellent guiding. I’d happily recommend it.
Response from Host, Jan 2026
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with Beto. He is a harcore birder!
Your guide should be a naturalist who know everything about the region and nature. And love teaching it to others

So we are! Thank you so much!
This was our first birdwatching experience ever, and we honestly did not know what to expect. I knew nothing about birds going into it, but it ended up being one of the highlights of our time in Monteverde. Our guide, Jason, was excellent. He is very knowledgeable and clearly knows the area and the birds extremely well. He spotted birds we never would have seen on our own and always took the time to point them out. He also set up the monocular for us so we could actually see the birds clearly, which made the experience much more enjoyable, especially as beginners. What really stood out was how much Jason genuinely enjoys birdwatching. His excitement made the whole experience more interesting and fun, and he explained things in a way that was easy to follow without feeling overwhelming. I would definitely recommend this tour.

Fantastic birding experience! Jason is extremely knowledgeable, has an amazing ear for bird calls, birds and the local fauna. He was also funny and it was clear he was very excited to be out the forest sharing with us. I would follow Jason through the woods anytime!! We have more trips back to Costa Rica planned and I’ll be absolutely contacting Jason again.

We had a fantastic walk with our guide Jason! We have already seen many birds of Costa Rica before our tour and Jason helped us learn about and see many more birds! He's experienced and a kind and friendly person.

Thank you for sharing Jelena!
We had a wonderful day birding with our guide, Jason Jimenez. Jason knew the birds by sight and sound, and was very patient pointing them out to us as we tried to locate them with our binoculars. He also was very good at capturing the birds in his spotting scope so we could get even better looks at the birds. Some highlights for us were the long tailed manakin, blue crowned motmot, collared trogon, and gray necked wood rail. It certainly was a great way to spend our morning.

We had a great time with Jason, spotting all kinds of birds and other wildlife (toucans were definitely the highlight) that we wouldn't have seen otherwise. Jason is a very knowledgeable and friendly tour guide who made the experience one of the best of our stay in this country. Would recommend for sure.

Hello, thanks a lot for you feedback. I also enjoyed the time with you guys!
Very nice paced tour. My husband is a birder (I love plants), and we both enjoyed ourselves. 46 species. Jacob was in his element and got so excited to see the birds and share them with us. Genuinely a wonderful guide!

Thank you for your feedback, Jesus is a great guide !
Myself and my friend are avid birds and were looking to see as much as we could. Jason was an amazing guide with extensive local and ecological knowledge and the ability to spot any bird in the bush! Thanks Jason for helping us see 40 bird species in 4 hours. My only regret is not booking you for the day or asking more questions about the local birds in the region.
Response from Host, Feb 2025
Hello Gill, thanks a lot for your review, come back soon to continue birding!
Jason was a fantastic guide who knew the area extremely well. He knows the bird sounds in the area and can even replicate them to attract birds for viewing. I saw about 32 bird species in a 4 hour tour, including the sought after Resplendent Quetzal! This birdwatching tour is a fantastic choice to experience Costa Rica’s rich bird species diversity.
Response from Host, Feb 2025
Thank you very much for such a nice review!
Jason was great !
He sent us the list of birds we got to see once the visit was over which was really cool. He was taking his time to explain things when things needed explanation and walked at a decent pace so we saw many different places and birds.
Don't go there expecting to see a huge amount of animals. Wildlife is unpredictable so go there with that in mind and simply enjoy the birds and animals you get to see.

Hello, thanks for your recomendation.
My partner and I did a tour (just the two of us) with our guide Jason, who was able to help us spot and identify numerous birds in the Curi Cancha reserve, including the Quetzal and a few other less frequently seen birds.
Definitely amateur friendly, as we were able to look through both the scope and binoculars that our guide had to properly appreciate the beautiful flora and fauna.
Response from Host, Jan 2025
Thank you!
Jason was attentive, interesting, interested, and complete professional. We saw and documented 26 species including quetzal, cookoo, tucanette. Also hairy porcupine, sloth 🦥. Great trio

Thank you so much for sharing, I'm so glad you could make it!
Highly recommend this Monteverde birdwatching experience at Curi-Cancha! Jason is an expert guide. In the walk through the Reserve he identified dozens of birds and sent a link to a complete list at the end of the tour. Favourites on that list were the Quetzal, collared trogon, northern emerald-toucanet, eye-ringed flat bill, warblers and hummingbirds. It is a true experience, where patience and listening for bird calls are rewarded with amazing sightings, photos and lots of happy moments shared with fellow bird watchers.

Hello Donna, so glad to hear this, thank you!
Jason is very knowledgeable; if you are a serious birder, you will have a great experience. I give this activity and provider 5 stars; but, I wouldn’t do this again with young and elementary-age children. The birding details are over their heads, and there is no guarantee of seeing the big and awesome birds they enjoy. A group guided tour in any other parks will cost less than half of this fee per person, and the guide will point out the exact same basic birds and creatures anyway. But again, if you are a patient adult and a bird nerd, this is for you. At the end of the activity you will get a list of all the birds you see. Spotting 30-40 species and taking quality pictures are well within reach.

Thanks for sharing, that day the weather was not the best, I really hope you could find the birds species you where specting to see. However, we can never promise anything to see, because is the natural envioroment and nothing is predictable.
Our tour guide, Jason, was excellent. He was very knowledgeable, friendly, and patient. We saw a variety of wildlife, including 26 birds. I would recommend this tour to anyone hoping to see what species of birds this area has to offer!

I had a great time! I was a little nervous at first because it was raining quite a bit, but Jason assured me it would be ok, and it was. He was there early and throughout the tour, was super informative about birds we saw as well as all the other wildlife and the flora! I came out of the experience with a lot more knowledge and I ended up staying in Curi Cancha afterwards to continue birding.
