PR6.2 Alecrim Hike Review with Madeira Explorers

The hike is a about 11km. They pick you up at 9am. We finished at 2pm. The drive from Funchal is an hour with a 40min lunch break at the waterfall. The waterfall was overcrowded. Parts of the trail is steep. The govt who takes trail fees should build lavatory facilities with the thousands of people that are on these trails and invariably use it as their latrine! Besides that, the hike was beautiful and challenging in parts. The guide was impatient and cynical complaining about the tourists and behaviour of fellow walkers throughout the experience and kept sharing flora/fauna information without waiting for the whole group to be present. So he was only really speaking to the front 1/3 of the group most of the time. More patience, consideration and a calmer demeanor would have been appreciated.

My first but won't be my last levada walk.

My first levada walk but certainly won't be my last. It did drizzle a bit but it did not mar the day. Where we stopped for lunch by the lagoon was so beautiful and I promised myself that when I return in summer, I will do the same walk to enjoy the lunch at least in warmer and hopefully drier conditions. Thanks to the multilingual Margarita for really making the day and taking care of the group.

The walk was a bit hard...

The walk was a bit hard in certain parts as there were steep ascensions and descensions, but the views and nature were totally worth it. Our guide Margarita was very helpful and informative and made sure everyone was comfortable and safe.
