The lovely Carlos picked us up before day break to beat the notorious Lima traffic. With the horn going strong to warn annoying pedestrians and other vehicles, we raced north up the Pan American highway. Carlos took us to breakfast at an artisanal bake house for bread and coffee. The mist arrived and I must admit I was a little disappointed at first, looking at the surrounding dusty hills typical of Lima’s desert landscape. It was only on going up into the specific landscape of the Lomas that the particular microclimate was evident. It really was very special and a little bit quirky and surreal, with owls that live in a hole in the ground, trees that look like something out of Dr Seuss and rocks that look like all sorts of characters. The bird life was especially plentiful with all of us seeing hummingbirds, eagles and hawks in addition to the little flycatchers and sparrows that accompanied us on the walk. My fellow travellers were an interesting couple who were happy to share their travel stories and their knowledge of the bird life. Throughout it all, Carlos was totally in charge and familiar in his environment, clearing enjoying the Lomas that he has been visiting since his teens. At one point we ran into a bit of trouble with a fairly painful and angry botanist but Carlos sorted him out quickly with some good shoving and furious hand gestures and we were on our way again. This was probably the highlight of my stay in Lima which has included some pretty amazing adventures. I can recommend the company and Carlos in particular. Thanks for such a special experience.
A nice peaceful hike in the fog forest of Lomas de Lachay. My tour guide was very good at explaining the vegetation response to the dry and fogging seasons.
Absolutely fascinating! Carlos was a wonderful guide. Knowledgeable, friendly, super accommodating. I’m not that fit and he worked very hard to make sure that I had a good hike. He was knowledgeable about the environment. Interesting drive up and drive back, the trip was about far more than just the fog forest, but also I learned a lot about Lima and the areas we drove through.
The delicious Breakfast was at a local bakery with a wood fire. Eddy, the driver, expertly brought us to Lomas de Lachey. The beautiful blue and yellow wildflowers greeted us at the entrance to the park. The first part of the hike was in the misty fog. At the peak, the sun appeared. On one side was the clear valley, on the other side the mysterious fog. We imagined the Sound of Music through the bird song and the spectacular views. The descent was made easier by the walking sticks Carlos provided and the nicely groomed trails. We highly recommend this tour with Carlos and Eddy!
TLDR: If you are looking for a personalized experience, want to hike but you want to stay in Lima, and you dislike being moved around like cattle, book with this company.
Fair warning: If you are seeking to be on an air conditioned bus and shuttled to a flat walking trail, this experience isn’t for you. Now with that said, for me this experience allowed me to get outside and hike as if I was at home with friends. From start to finish, I felt like I was able to enjoy Lomas de Lachay and the rural areas of Lima without the touristy vibes.
The tour guide, Carlos, made the experience more authentic and wasn’t afraid to talk about Peru’s culture and world/common topics. He made the hike fun and despite not being in the best of shape, I was able to hike the longer trail with ease. The hike, the conversation, and taking in the beauty of the winter in Peru, was a great ending to my time here.
Thanks Carlos for an enjoyable day. While it wasn’t the right time of year to see the green vegetation, I enjoyed having the park to ourselves, the views, the birds and the unusual rock formations.
Also thanks for taking me to taste amazing seafood on the way back.
My friend and I had the best time with Carlos, he gave us insight to so much of Lomas history and vegetation. We seen so many native birds including an owl, as well as eagles and some cute lizards. We loved the views and thanks to Carlos offering us sunscreen, we didn't experience another sunburn. What a beautiful experience to do this hike on my birthday and basicslly have the park to ourselves since it is Christmas. It was so peaceful and beautiful. Be sure to bring snacks just in case!
A great day at Lomas de Lachay with Rodrigo. Pick-up at our hotel was prompt and the stop for some fresh bread en route was amazing. The hike around Lomas de Lachay was do-able and interesting. While it was very foggy and misty, it was a magical walk through the woods.
Saw some life birds and had wonderful conversations with Carlos. Lomas de Lachay was great. The hike was good exercise and not for those out of shape.
