What To Expect

Meet your guide at your hotel in La Fortuna for an early departure (confirm time with tour provider). Depart the city for the drive through the plains of San Carlos, on the outskirts of the Juan Castro Blanco National Park, until you reach your trailhead at a volcanic caldera for a roughly 4-mile (6.5-kilometer) hike, taken over the course of the morning.

Hike through pastures bordering the forest on your way down to the Hule Lagoon and the smaller Congo Lagoon nearby, and then continue on a second trail bordering the volcanic caldera. Descend through the rain forest and catch clear views of the surrounding landscape. At the end of your hike, enjoy homemade lunch in a local family’s home with a panoramic view of your surroundings.

On the way back to La Fortuna, stop to view the waterfalls of the Toro Hydroelectric Project, which reach 590 feet (180 meters).

A hiker’s dream

Stephanie_M, Jul 2023
This tour has been my favorite so far while in Costa Rica! I don’t particularly love highly traveled tourist spots, but they’re inevitable if you want to see a new country. However, this was not that at all! We started out at a local families home that led along a stunning path into the volcano, and provided breathtaking views of the Costa Rican country landscape. The path was so peaceful and private as we never encountered a single person along the way! However, it is to be noted that this trek is NOT for the inexperienced hiker- it was VERY uneven, with lots of very steep inclines and declines. And the path has lots of lava rocks and tripping hazards along the way. But if you do love to hike/trek, and want to get away from the main tourist attractions and see some stunning landscape, then this tour is a MUST! Pictures do not do it justice. It’s beautiful. I absolutely loved it!
