Itinerary
Meet a driver for pickup in central Granada, and travel out of the city to the starting point of the hike, at the top of the Sierra Nevada road, roughly 8,200 feet (2,500 meters).
Start walking through the scenic glacial Valley of San Juan, where you’ll see flowing water and blooming wildflowers at the edge of the trail. Partway through the hike you’ll reach Posiciones del Veleta, where fortifications were built during the Spanish Civil War, looking out across the northern face of Sierra Nevada and year-round snowfields.
Gain an elevation of more than 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) to the top of Tajos del Campanario, where you see the north face of Muhacen, Veleta, and Alcazaba.
Your guide will establish the pace for the group and make several stops along the way. This full-day hiking tour concludes with drop-off back in Granada.

Lovely experience with Jamie & Kai (his dog!) Would recommend to any traveler looking for an escape from the city for a bit!

An exciting exploration in Sierra Nevada when the glacier had not completely melted. Our guide was attentive and took good care of us.

Lovely hike in the mountains. There was snow present. Luckily they loaned us hiking shoes and gloves. While it’s possible to do the hike in trainers, hiking boots are more ideal. The guide did a fantastic job and got me back to town in time to catch the train.

Really an amazing experience, I strongly recommend for everyone. It might be a little hard if you're not use to this type of trekking, but it's worth it !

We had a great time! This is a great way to get out of the busy city and enjoy the beautiful landscape. We drove about ~45 minutes up into the Sierra Nevada mountains, and then hiked through the afternoon. We left Granada at 9 am and got back around 4. The hike was moderately strenuous with some steep climbs at ~9000 feet. Poles, hats, and gloves were provided. The views were great, and we spotted mountain goats and vultures. We saw no other hikers the whole time, so it was very peaceful.

Very cool and unique experience. Such a nice change of place from the city and tours. Jaime was an amazing guide. The landscape is very harsh but beautiful. Glacial valley. Definitively need to be physically fit to do this tour as you start at 8K feet and hike to 10K feet--so air is thinner. You will want to have trail or hiking shoes as you are mostly on rock. Stopped to do a picnic along the way (pack a lunch, snacks and bring plenty of water). The mountain air was really nice. Can't recommend enough. Thank you Jaime.

Jaime (and Kai!) are truly expert guides who navigated us safely through these wild terrains in unexpectedly rainy and windy weather. I thought I was prepared with hiking boots, layers of clothes and rainproof jacket but the mountains had another idea and I was grateful for Jaime's extra pairs of gloves, beanie and rain ponchos. So I think overpreparedness for all types of weather is key. The ascent was tougher than expected because we were off the beaten paths and climbing steep slate hills but it was totally worth it at the top with spectacular views, and in hindsight more fun. I recommend hiking shoes with ankle support for this hike as it can get quite slippery on the loose rocks even without the rain. My parents in their late 60s are regular bushwalkers and they thoroughly enjoyed this tough hike. Highly recommended for those who have a good level of fitness and like a challenge.

Jaime was a wonderful guide, informative and kind to everyone. He’s clearly a very seasoned hiker / mountaineer, and has the best dog ever by his side with an equal breadth of capability. Even with that, he was able to support the entire group with a range of endurance and skills. The hike itself is no joke, however it is very doable if you have done some hiking with elevation. The terrain is at most minimally technical. Only thing that was a slight hiccup was my partner did not have adequate footwear packed, due to our impression there would be a range of appropriate hiking shoes available. There was only a size 43, too big, but manageable in this case. If you require footwear for rent reach out at least a few days in advance.
Overall, fantastic time. Well worth the money. Jaime and Kai make a fantastic pair to guide and encourage people through this journey.

Picked up right on time by our bright and breezy guide Buitre.
The hike was marvelous and the cool breezes a wonderful respite from the heat of the city.
Magnificent views, cattle, sheep and mountain goats easily spotted with snow still visible on the upper slopes..
Buitre went at a very manageable pace for our group of 5. Singing and sharing insights on the way he made the day relaxing and fun!
A 5 star day.....except for the following:
1. The company state that they hire out hiking boots for 3euro.
However, they no longer provide this service.
A good pair of strong sneakers will indeed suffice....mine were not so strong and lacked grip.
I was hoping to hire boots and contacted the company 2 weeks before the trip to secure them, but my messages were ignored until it was too late and I was already in Spain.
2. The route is not difficult per se, but there are a couple of places where hiking poles are a definite advantage.😉
I was assured that poles would be available FOC for us all.
Again, not the case.
Buitre kindly lent me his own hiking poles whilst 2 of our group members had to make do with sticks found along the path.
Not ideal, especially if you like the security and balance that poles afford.
I would suggest poles be provided as standard procedure for all, and that the boot hire option be removed from the company information if the service is no longer provided. 🤷🏼♀️
Thank you Buitre for a lovely day!!

Great hike with Jaime, his dog, and fellow travelers. It was steep and long but well worth the effort!

We really enjoyed our hike with Jamie and Kai. Jamie is an excellent guide answering question and point out flora, fauna, and geomorphic features on the mountain. Be prepared with lunch, snack, water, and a long day of physical exertion. The views were worth the climb (which was challenging at times)! We would definitely recommend this day trip!

The Hike was definitely challenging but doable. What made it even better was our amazing guide Jamie and his cute doggy Kai. Would definitely recommend.

Jaime is an experienced tour guide and he personally walked with us throughout the entire hike. His guiding style is calm, quiet, and he gives you space to take the hike at your pace.
Ascending the trail was definitely challenging but completely worthwhile, in a way the physical demands of this hike reminded me of what it feels like to do a spin class! If you are into an activity challenge and want to see the Sierra Nevada landscape, I would highly recommend this tour. I went in early September so the weather was warm with a mild chill at the top of the hike with winds. If you’re wondering what to wear, long activewear pants, trail shoes, and a sweat wicking base layer with a packable windbreaker & hat is a good way to set yourself up for a good hiking experience. For snacks and food, water - 2L bottle, and some nuts or a jamon sandwich should do the trick:) Happy hiking!

Jaime was my guide for the day and picked me up on time at the rendezvous point.
I was fortunate to have a private tour as other people cancelled. My suggestion to anybody who fears the heat of the city while checking a weather app (40 degrees), the temperature in the mountain area is like 22/23 degrees so really comfortable for a walk. Jaime asked me If I would be in for an extra advanced piece of the route and I was very glad I agreed to it.
The landscape is gorgeous and the silence you can experience is also outstanding. I would advise the tour if you are in for a day of exercise as well as some points really demand something from you physically, but also the guide will adjust the route to your needs when on the hike.

Jaime was a wonderful guide. It’s a fairly challenging hike if you’re not a hiker but definitely doable.

A great day out in the mountains. Our guide was very attentive and knowledgeable about the local fauna and flora. Highly recommend.

This was a fantastic tour and a memorable trip highlight for us. My husband (avid hiker) and myself (couch potato) were able to both enjoy the hike and the views. Jesus was a patient guide and explained the flora/fauna when asked. Our hike was about 5 hours with 2 hours car travel. If you're not the best hiker, recommend bringing trekking poles or good shoes with ankle support as the terrain is a bit uneven. Also bring drinks/snacks to eat at the top of the mountain. Really wonderful experience and would recommend to anyone!

We had a fantastic day walking with Jaime, his dog Ki and met Melissa and Tim. The weather in the city was very hot so we didn’t need the extra layers that we brought as the temperature in the mountains was very comfortable. I was the least fit of the group and struggled at the last incline after 2 hours of walking. But the group went at my pace and I was able to enjoy the walk despite many breaks to get my breath. It was absolutely beautiful in the mountains and the best way to get away from modern life. Jaime was an incredibly good guide providing support and information about the history of the area, the fauna and flora. The walk back was very easy and we celebrated with a beer. It was well worth the effort and I would thoroughly recommend it.

We had the most amazing hike with 'Jamie' and Kai. Jamie was considerate all the way and helped me when I was struggling. Kai, his dog kept us fully entertained with his antics in the snow. It was a brilliant trip and I would thoughly recommend.

This is an amazing experience! A day among the snowy peaks. I learnt about the flowers and the rocks and had lunch alongside Spain's second highest mountain. Thanks so much Jaime and his dog. An unforgettable day out. The view on the drive up and down from the start point is also breath taking.
Mark H, Aug 2017
Excellent English-speaking guide Jaime who knew terrain, flaura and fauna intimately and was able to pace the ascent to Pte de Veleta 3396 m in order perfectly to suit an unfit 66 year old and a very fit 19 year old.

This tour in UNBELIEVABLE and highly recommended. I was a little anxious at first but Jaimie our guide was patient and generous with me and we made it to the top. The views are spectacular. We went in the Autumn the weather was perfect. Do yourself a favour and book this tour.
