Machu Picchu is amazing, but the overall experience of this booking was quite stressful.
At 5am on the first day, we were told to go to a different square than we expected to be collected from - it was fine in the end but a confusing start so early in the morning. Then we didn’t know who to look for - a car, minibus, particular person…? We got a call from the driver who only spoke Spanish. Fortunately my limited Spanish meant I could figure out what his license plate was so I could spot him, but those with no Spanish at all may have struggled. Again, it worked out fine in the end though.
It was unclear where to go in Ollantaytambo when awaiting the train. It was only because we walked around and spoke to people that we figured out where we needed to be.
We arrived in Aguas Calientes at lunch time, having been told we had lunch included in our package. We sent a WhatsApp to the organiser the previous day, who replied with a voice note saying we had lunch and dinner included on day 1, and breakfast on day 2. When we arrived in Aguas Calientes and needed lunch, we sent a WhatsApp asking where to go for that, and were told we didn’t have lunch included after all. A brief phone call cleared this up, and we were told even though we technically shouldn’t have lunch, we could get it because we had been told originally that we would. We went to the restaurant we were told to go to, and they seemed confused by us saying we were with the tour group. Again, this was sorted in the end, but made for a frustrating and confusing experience.
We returned to the same restaurant for dinner as instructed (only when we asked - this information wasn’t offered up). Our private tour guide arrived to explain the plans for the next day, which was really helpful. Weirdly though, having been told to go to the restaurant for 7pm, the tour guide arrived saying he’d been to our hotel to collect us, and later on we saw we had a WhatsApp message from the organiser asking us to meet the guide at our hotel reception, which was not what we were told before.
The hotel in Aguas Calientes was very basic amd not very private (hole in bathroom wall meant we could hear neighbours clearly, and big window looking into the corridor). It was also noisy at night (my husband had to go out into the hall and ask people to be quiet at 2am, as they were laughing and talking very loudly). As we were leaving so early, we missed the slot for breakfast, but via Google translate, managed to ask them to make us a breakfast bag to go, which they did, and which we much appreciated.
We woke the next day very early to go up Machu Picchu, and from that point on, all went smoothly, and we had a great experience.
Nixon, our main point of contact, was very kind and friendly, and helpful when we spoke on the phone.
The overall issue we found with this booking was that no specific information was offered up to us. It felt like if we didn’t ask, send multiple messages and have phone calls with the organiser, we would have been in the dark and potentially missed out on lifts, food etc… It kind of felt like it would have been easier and less stressful for us to book everything separately ourselves.
