The experience was well organized and the team of both Elisban and Alex were great. Starting later in the morning vs. the 4:00 AM option was great. Be prepared to have a late lunch (around 3:00), but you basically have the mountain all to yourself. Elisban did a great job explaining about the history and food of the towns you pass through on the way to your final destination. We stopped for some local bread along the way which was a nice treat. The second half of the drive is on unpaved roads, so it takes about 3.5 hours to arrive at the base of the Rainbow Mountain hike. You will need to bring 30 soles/person to enter.
The hike itself is a challenging trek at 16000 feet above sea level - the altitude is no joke. You can choose the option of hiking the first 3/4 or taking horses. If you are not a seasoned hiker, I would strongly suggest choosing to take the horses so you can save your energy for the final climb.
The views are beautiful, however, you should come prepared for all weather. We faced rain, snow and small hail - so proper clothing helps.
The hike back down is much easier than going up. You can choose to take horses back down, however, it is not necessary. The hike back to base camp is ~ 3 KM and the views are beautiful. It should be noted the van and tour guides come equipped with oxygen if anyone is suffering from the altitude.
Once we departed, it is about 1.5 hours of driving to reach the lunch spot. You order your food in advance so it comes quickly after you arrive. The restaurant is nice and the food was delicious. They also have clean bathrooms which is a plus.
On the final stretch of the drive we listened to music of our different cultures which was fun for all the passengers. We were back by 7:00 PM in Cusco.
Overall, we had a fantastic experience and I would highly recommend the tour.

This tour is not for the weak! Rainbow mountain at its peak is about 5000m, way higher than Cusco. Definitely donât book this tour the first day you arrive Cusco. Our tour guide (so sorry I forgot his name) was funny and well prepared. My son and I rode the horses up and hiked down. The last stretch though, you have to say goodbye to your horse and hike on your own⌠that was⌠hard! But well worth it! Our 7yr old son did it ;) very proud of him

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! You're absolutely rightâRainbow Mountain is an incredible challenge, especially at that altitude, which is why we always recommend taking a few days in Cusco to acclimate properly.
We're so happy to hear you had this adventure as a family. What an accomplishment for your son! That final stretch on foot is no easy feat đ Definitely challenging, but as you said, totally worth it.
We're also glad you enjoyed the tour and your guideâs humor đ Thank you again for trusting us, and we hope to see you on another adventure soon!

Our guide John was excellent and provided a lot of information on the Rainbow Mountain formation with pictures from the past to today. It was a private tour since it is the low season which made the journey a great experience. We highly recommend this tour. The only thing we would suggest is to do it the second day after your arrival to acclimate yourself to the elevation effect on your system.
Response from Host, Apr 2026
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! đ
Weâre thrilled to hear that John made your Rainbow Mountain tour so informative and enjoyable, especially with the historical photos he shared.
Itâs great that having a private tour during the low season made the experience even more special and relaxed. đ
We also appreciate your tip about doing the tour on the second day after arrival â thatâs excellent advice for anyone looking to acclimate to the altitude safely.
Thank you for recommending us, and we hope to welcome you again for another unforgettable adventure in Peru!

We had the most amazing time on this tour! The crowds were minimal. Our guide John (Juan) was extremely knowledgeable about the Rainbow Mountain area as well as Cusco. He hiked along with our group, carrying oxygen just in case, although none of us needed it that day. The included dinner at a restaurant en route was fantastic. I highly recommend this tour!

Really great guide and really great company that ensured we were feeling okay all throughout the trip and kept checking in on us. My oxygen dropped to 65% and the guide was quick to say I wasn't looking good so he checked and supplied me with an oxygen canister in the van.

The tour started right on time, and we were picked up promptly. It was a small groupâonly five of usâwhich made the experience much more personal and comfortable.
Our tour guide, Jon, was amazing. He was extremely knowledgeable, respectful, and, most importantly, genuinely kind and supportive. He stayed with us the entire time, helped us navigate the climb, and made sure everyone felt safe and encouraged. Even at high altitude, he never left our sideâhe motivated us, paced with us, and made sure we reached the top and came back down safely. He was truly the best tour guide weâve had on this whole trip.
The lunch provided was delicious and much better than we expected after such a challenging hike. The entire day felt well organized and stress-free.
We were also dropped off in a timely manner, and everything ran smoothly from start to finish. Overall, a wonderful experience and highly recommendedâespecially with Jon as your guide.
Response from Host, Dec 2025
Thank you very much for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and detailed review of your experience with Peru Private Tours. Iâm truly delighted to hear everything ran smoothly from start to finishâespecially the punctual pick-up, the well-organized logistics, and the comfortable small-group experience.
Most importantly, thank you for your wonderful words about your guide, Jon. Iâm proud to hear he was not only extremely knowledgeable and respectful, but also genuinely kind and supportive throughout the entire hike. On high-altitude trails, having a guide who stays close, sets the right pace, motivates the group, and prioritizes safety makes all the differenceâso it means a lot to know he helped you feel encouraged and secure all the way to the top and back down.
Iâm also happy you enjoyed the lunch and found it better than expected after a challenging climb. Your recommendation is greatly appreciated, and we would be honored to welcome you back to Peru for another memorable journey.
Stephen_H, Dec 2025
Fantastic service from start to finish. Guide John was great, got the pitch just right. Also the 8am start is a great point of difference, itâs really nice to go late and avoid the crowds. And the place itself is remarkable, although I can imagine if you did go with the groups early you might have a very different experience.
Response from Host, Dec 2025
Thank you very much for sharing your experience with Peru Private Tours. Iâm delighted to hear the service was fantastic from start to finish, and that John provided the perfect balanceâprofessional, informative, and engaging.
Weâre especially happy you enjoyed our exclusive 8:00 AM departure, designed specifically to avoid the early rush and let you experience the destination in a calmer, more enjoyable way. As you mentioned, it truly can feel like a completely different place without the crowds.
Thank you again for your trust and recommendation. We would love to welcome you back to Peru for another remarkable journey
Tiffany_F, Dec 2025
Amazing tour! Rainbow Mountain is an absolute must-see when visiting Peru. We especially appreciated that our group left later than most, which allowed us to enjoy the summit with very few people around. It made for much better photos and an even more memorable experience.
The tour itself can be challenging due to the elevation, but our guide took excellent care of us and even provided oxygen when neededâsomething we were very grateful for.
We finished the day with a nice meal, though after such a long and tiring trek, I personally would have preferred to skip this part (and the rush-hour traffic it created). Still, it was a wonderful day overall and a truly worthwhile experience.
Response from Host, Dec 2025
Thank you very much for your wonderful and thoughtful review. We are delighted to hear that you found Rainbow Mountain to be a must-see and that our later departure allowed you to enjoy the summit with very few people around â that quieter, crowd-free experience (and better photos!) is exactly what we aim to provide with this schedule.
We are also very pleased to know that your guide took excellent care of you at high altitude and that having oxygen available made you feel safer and more comfortable during the hike. Your safety and well-being are always our top priority.
Regarding the meal at the end of the tour and the additional time spent in traffic, we truly appreciate your honest feedback. We understand that after such a demanding trek, some guests may prefer to return directly to Cusco rather than sit down for a full meal. We will review this with our operations team to explore more flexible options and better adapt to each groupâs energy level at the end of the day.
Thank you again for choosing Peru Private Tours and for sharing your experience with future travelers. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back to Peru for another unforgettable adventure.

From start to finish this was a wonderful tour with lots of nice personal touches. We got a little snack bag which was a lovely touch. The fact that this tour started at 8am was nice as coming down from the hike we got the mountain to ourselves. Alex was a great driver and Elisban was very kind and encouraging throughout the hike. The little glow stick rave coming back and playing music from each of our countries was loved too. It was nice to be dropped back to my apartment too as most tours have been on have dropped you to the main plaza only.
Response from Host, Nov 2025
Thank you very much for taking the time to share such a detailed and thoughtful review. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed the tour from start to finish and that the personal touches, such as the snack bag, added something special to your experience.
We are glad that the 8:00 a.m. start worked well for you and allowed you to enjoy the mountain with fewer crowds on the way down â we know how important that tranquility is after the hike. It is wonderful to hear that Alex was a great driver and that Elisban was kind and encouraging throughout the hike; we will happily share your kind words with both of them.
We are also very happy that you enjoyed the glow stick âraveâ on the way back and the music from each country â our team loves creating a fun and friendly atmosphere. Finally, we are pleased that the drop-off at your apartment made things more convenient for you, as we always try to offer a truly comfortable and personalized service.

The tour took place as advertised. Our tour guide was very reassuring and accommodating, he introduced us to chuta bread and even helped us order some on our way back to Lima. Unfortunately on our way down from Rainbow Mountain it started snowing/raining and we all had very muddy boots which dirtied the van. The driver remained very helpful and patient, he even lend me his gloves.
My friend did succumb to altitude sickness so just be aware of this risk.

It's a long, harrowing drive on mostly bumpy, narrow roads that can barely accommodate 1.5 vans but likely worth it on a beautiful day. It was a fun group and a great tour guide, which made the rainy day and foggy views less disappointing. The tour had a few unexpected things thrown in like a bag of snacks and sharable bread made in a local town we passed through, which was a nice added touch.
The only issue is the communication from the tour guide regarding how and how long it took to climb the mountain - I think this was mostly a language barrier. Basically it takes about 80-90 minutes to climb the whole thing from the parking lot. There are 3 stages: Stage 1 can either be walked to (45 min), guided horse rental (80 sol) or tandem motorbike (80 sol). The walk is no joke because elevation is 16k feet. There is also a toilet here (2 sol to use). As an experienced hiker near sea level, every step to me felt like lead and it was hard to breathe. Stage 2 is a 15 minute hike to the a landing spot to see Rainbow Mountain, and you need to leave the horse or motorcycle behind. Most people stop here. Stage 3 takes about another 15 minutes and gives you an elevated view of Rainbow Mountain.
We were a bit disappointed because it was rainy, foggy, and even haling at higher elevations. Pack warm gear! I would absolutely do this tour again, but I would book a day or two out, once I knew it would be sunny out.
Response from Host, Oct 2025
Thank you for the detailed and thoughtful review. Weâre glad the group vibe and guide helped brighten a rainy, foggy dayâand that the local bread and snack bag were a nice touch. Youâre absolutely right: the access road is narrow and bumpy, and altitude makes the hike feel tougher. We appreciate your clear breakdown of the climb (stages and timing); weâll incorporate this into our pre-tour briefing and written guidance to avoid any language barriers. Weâll also emphasize weather/gear (warm layers, waterproofs) and, when possible, help guests adjust dates closer to the forecast (subject to availability). Your feedback helps us improve clarity while keeping safety first. We hope to welcome you back on a blue-sky day.
Eleen_S, Oct 2025
Highly recommended. Experience tour guide with care and concern. We were the first to be picked up from Hilton hotel. On the way the tour guide bought a Cusco bread for us to try and it was lovely. We had a toilet break 1/2 way where we were going to have lunch after the hike. A bag with water, sweets , energy bars was distributed to us. Tour guide organised a return trip for us by horse. Hot drink was offered when we returned to the van. I suffered from high altitude sickness and could not take the late lunch. Tour guide was caring and asked me to sit near the heater and offered me drinks and kept checking if I was better. As there were a few of us in different hotels, they were so thoughtful to organise a taxi waiting for us at the first drop off to send us back separately. Thank you so much for the wonderful tour. Apologised if I misspelled the tour guide name - Sean/Jean. You are wonderful
Response from Host, Oct 2025
Thank you for your heartfelt review! Weâre delighted to hear our guide Jean (Sean) took such great care of youâfrom the early Hilton pick-up and sharing Cusco bread, to the snack bag, restroom stop, horse arrangement, and a hot drink waiting in the van. Weâre especially grateful for your kind words about how he looked after you during the high-altitude symptoms, making sure you were warm, hydrated, and comfortable, and for coordinating separate taxis so everyone got back smoothly. We hope youâre feeling better now, and we truly appreciate your recommendation.

The hike was challenging (mainly on the way up), but worth the experience. The tour, driver and guide (Ronaldo) were great. They were caring and patient, taking time to assist those who needed help. Just remember to layer up and bring gloves, hat, beanie and rain coat as the weather changes quickly. Youâll go from a t shirt to jacket in minutes.

This activity was fantastic! The later start made the trip far more comfortable than the typical 4 AM tours, and we still had plenty of time to enjoy the hike. The colours of the mountain were breathtaking, and although there were some people at the top, it was nothing compared to the usual crowds â it actually felt peaceful and special.
Our guide, Nayda, was very friendly, knowledgeable, and punctual, making sure the whole group was well taken care of.
The altitude made the hike a challenge, but reaching the summit was incredibly rewarding. Overall, a smooth, memorable experience.

This was a fabulous tour! Our guide Alex and driver Alex were amazing! The communication prior to the event was informative and timely. The bus ride was long and bumpy. The scenery at the mountain was breathtaking!!!!! However the hike was rigorous. They do offer the option of taking a horse up for 80 soles. We took advantage. We are in our mid 50s and in pretty good shape at low elevation. However hiking at 15000-16000 feet was quite taxing and challenging. The snack bag they provided was thoughtful and delicious. We ended the day with a meal that was good! Over all it was a long day but such a great experience! Highly recommend.
Response from Host, Sep 2025

Please please be very aware of the Altitude of this hike- The hike will take you from around 14,000 ft to over 16,000.
There needs to be better warning on Viator about the need to Aclimate for several days at high altitude before attempting this hike. Even the youngest and fittest can get sick or even die at this altitude.
I did not aclimate long enough and ended up in Cusco 02 hospital for 3 days with a pulmonary adema and pneumonia. My Oxidation rate dropped to 55%. I considered myself fit and healthy as a Ultra Marathoner and long distance cyclist.
Beware of the dangers of high altitude and learn from my mistake- I could have died up there.
In fairness the guide did come to my rescue and gave me oxygen at the parking lot but the damage had already been done to my lungs and system!!
