I would highly NOT recommend alpaca tours. They seemed very unorganized and our guide right from the start was extremely rude and arrogant. His name was Samanez or “sam”. He never fully explained anything leaving us to ask questions to inquire more info. When we did ask questions he was rude and demeaning telling us to relax and calm down. He constantly referenced the fact he has been doing this for over 16 years which is hard to believe because he was so unorganized and never knew what was going on, there were multiple times we had to remind him of things. Our second night we were staying in glass domes which were covered during the day so they weren’t so hot but at night we had to ask him 3 times to take the cover off so we could take advantage of the experience and he was clearly annoyed that we wanted this. Finally after no one came to do it after an hour we had to go out in the freezing cold to ask him a 4th time while doing this we saw that people were attempting to take them off themselves since no staff would assist them. The whole point of staying in glass domes is to enjoy the stars at night. The third day after lunch we were supposed to go to the hot springs he told us at lunch the hot springs were closed due to a landslide which obviously would not have been his fault. The next day we met another tour group that said that that was not true and that they went to the hot springs yesterday and it was amazing….interesting. We caught him in multiple lies throughout the trek. Since we missed out on the hot springs, he stressed that after lunch we should take the bus to the lodge because the trek there wasn’t great and you would just be walking along a boring road. Half of our group decided to walk and the others took the bus which seemed like a lot, 50 soles a person, for a 30 minute ride. Which in retrospect I believe he lied about the hot springs so that he could take a cut of the money we paid to take the bus. The group that walked said the trail was in fact not on the road most of the way and was actually beautiful including a stunning waterfall, so misinformation and lies again. The day we hiked to aguas calientes the rest of the group was slightly ahead of us and we got to a fork in the road up to a viewpoint and Sam found out the rest of the group had gone up to the viewpoint instead of going to the right so he told us to just sit on a bench and wait while he went to get them, we asked him if it was worth seeing should we just go with him and he said no it’s nothing special. We went with him anyways and it was the best views of the day, more lies. And the group was no where near ready to leave everyone was buying snacks and using the toilet and taking pictures so we would have sat on that bench for 45 minutes if we hadn’t just gone with him. Machu pichu day was amazing but once again he did not even know that he had to scan our hyuana pichu tickets in at a different location so we had to wait for him to do that. After dinner that night he told us we had to carry our duffel bags from the restaurant to the hotel up the steep road. On arrival there we saw the other alpaca group had had their duffels already delivered for them. Also upon leaving aguas calientes we had to empty everything in our duffels into trash bags and carry the trash bags full of our things through town to the train and upon arriving at the train saw that all the other alpaca groups did not have to do that and still had their duffels. Upon arriving back to Cusco they stopped on a road that reeked of urine to give us our luggage that we had left and then unpacked all of the trash bags into the piss laden street for some reason just for them to reload them back onto the bus, it literally made no sense and everyone seemed very confused as to what was going on. The group we trekked with was amazing and made the experience great even though Sam repeatedly tried to ruin it. Overall truly an amazing experience but would never use this guide service again. Also the other guide elder was great and he truly seemed like he cared and was so sweet however his English wasn’t the best making it difficult at times to communicate. Overall it was an incredible experience. It was just hard to witness other groups and their tour guides enjoying each others company. Sam seemed annoyed and bothered the entire time. He didn’t remember anyone’s names or even who the newly weds were in our group celebrating their honeymoon. As someone who works for tips, he surely didn’t provide any services worth tipping for and he made it extremely uncomfortable when asking for tips at the end of the trip.

My daughter and I had a great Salkantay Trek with Alplaca Expeditions! Our guides, Alvin and David, were wonderful. The chefs, porters, and horsemen also worked hard to take care of us.
Alpaca Expéditions est vraiment une équipe extraordinaire ! Ils sont vigilants et dévoués. Une aventure magnifique !
