Be very cautious of the food - Food Poisoning

Overall, we enjoyed this tour. HOWEVER, the morning after we returned from the tour, both my partner and I became seriously unwell with food poisoning. We were both hospitalised and diagnosed with Salmonella, which had a significant impact on the rest of our holiday. The food hygiene standards appeared poor. All of the meat and other food for the three-day tour is transported from Cusco with the group, which made me question the food storage conditions. A cook travels with the group and prepares all meals. If you choose this tour, I would strongly recommend opting for the vegetarian meals and avoiding any washed raw fruit or vegetables. There were eight people on our tour. The first day mainly involved travelling and descending into the cloud forest, with plenty of opportunities for birdwatching. The second day was particularly enjoyable. We visited a hummingbird café (there is an additional entrance fee), took a boat trip along the river, and went on several jungle walks. We saw snakes, countless insects, capybaras and river otters. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable. The final day included more bird watching then a full travel day back to Cusco. The accommodation is rustic, with no hot water. The first accomodation did have WIFI. At the second lodge, electricity is only available for a few hours each day, so I would recommend bringing a power bank to charge your phone and other devices. One small downside was that the tour guide repeatedly reminded the group to tip the driver and cook over the last day. While I appreciate that tips are customary and the staff work hard, the frequent reminders made me feel a little uncomfortable, as it felt somewhat pressured. Overall, we genuinely enjoyed the tour while we were there, and the wildlife and guide were excellent. Unfortunately, developing Salmonella immediately afterwards made us feel extremely ill and ultimately ruined the remainder of our trip. To their credit, the tour company refunded 50% of the tour cost in recognition of what happened.

The trip was not worth its price. Half of the money would have even been to much. We were really thinking about claiming a refund of $ 80.- . 1. Because the accomodations had nothing to do with the photographs that were exposed in the Internet. The first night we were in a stinky place you could not sleep in, the second was ok beides the fact that the shower did not work. Water was only dropping. 2. The 4, by the promoter promised excursions/walks, were reduced to one long walk and "half" a night walk. The night walk was badly prepaired by the guide, because he was not informed that a dump on the way could not be crossed. Therefore we had to return after half an hour instead of a 2 hours walk. On the way back to our accomodation our guide Lucho was demotivated to show us further "attractions" and just walked straight along. Next morning because of rain the trip to the macaw clay lick was canceled as well. The whole trip was fake, besides the driver that was great and the guide Michel of the 7 days tour, that accompanied us on the way to Atalaya.

During those days we were doing maintenance work in the lodges using diesel, which unfortunately caused a strong odor. We regret that this affected your comfort.
