Beware in Cairo

The museum was great. Unfortunately, we were never told that our guide was not going to be the one to pick us up at the hotel. The car that picked us up was a mess and hardly had air-conditioning and the driver spoke no English. So the, bellman interpreted for us that he was there to take us to our guide at the museum. It was an incredibly uncomfortable ride through horrible traffic and heat in a car. We were sure was going to break down any moment. Then after the tour at the museum, we thought our guide was taking us back to the hotel but he put us back in the same car to return. It was awful.

The tour guide Waleed was a nice and friendly person. He clearly communicated to us that he will provide some explanation and then give us time to further explore the museum on our own. We would have preferred if he spent more time explaining the history and talk about different objects in the museum. The museum is not fully opened (20% available). Overall we were happy with our tour and our guide.

The actual tour had no english speaking tour driver; the car had no air condition. The actual tour was apart of the bought ticket, that could have been bought on site or online. The company had to be reminded that water and snacks were to be provided, during the drive to and from the site. There was no information provided, during the drive, about the history of anything.

The GEM is worth a visit even now!

We are so glad we visited the grand museum although it’s not fully open it was still an amazing experience. Our driver Abdul was very kind and knowledgable. Once we got to the grand museum we was greeted by our tour guide. He was kind, and funny. Has a lot of knowledge and was one of the best tour guides we have had. He also did a fun game at the end which he asked a question and I won! It was a nice touch to the end of the tour! - we also bumped into him again at a different tour and he remembered us! (wish I had remembered his name) but thank you so much!

This is the worst experience we had. The tour operator never contacted us after booking non refundable trip. Somehow he sneaky changed the description of the tour after my complain, but we were supposed to have an English speaking guide, I had to chase tour operator Mohamed who only contacted the morning of the tour. I had to contact viator via WhatsApp, then sent a car half an hour late, then found out no tour guide when we arrived at the museum . We were then told to use the guide at the museum. We had no idea. Then there were no English speaking guide at the time. The car he sent was so dirty and old. This was the most expensive tour we did. We could have spent $100 AUD and an uber but paid $180 AUD FOR NOTHING! Such unscrupulous operator! SHAME ON YOU VIATOR HAVING THIS ON YOUR ITINERARY!!

Visiting the Grand Museum was excellent and well worth the time and cost. However, the transport was very poor, hence the two stars. The car arrived 30 minutes late so we did not arrive for our 12.00 slot until 12.40…!! It was also very small, dirty and had not a/c which in temperatures touching 35c was no good.

Driver arrived 15 minutes late (tour was for 1 PM; driver arrived 1 :15 PM. 4. Tour guide was not provided; we were left off with no instructions as to where to go. Tour guide was finally identified as a Museum employee, not an employee of the Tour company recommended by Viator.

Be aware that this tour examines the G.E.M itself and some of the extraordinary engineering involved in its construction and what it WILL house. At the moment there are extremely limited objects for display and photography is extremely limited. Until such time as the contents of the Cairo Egyptian Museum is transferred across you will want to go there for artefacts. Once you know this then you have the correct expectations. Of course this tour grants you bragging rights that you get to see the G.E.M before it is open to the public!

I enjoyed the tour with a wonderful guide with a red hat. He was very fluent in Japanese and he told me more about the exhibits. I was happy that I had no trouble communicating in Japanese and could ask various questions casually.
