So let me start by saying I’m one of the easiest reviews you’ll ever have. I try to be patient and kind because I know that people generally work hard and it always can be challenging with language and cultural differences to create a good experience. Having said that, this truly was the worst tour I have ever had in any country on any topic.
My son and I wanted to learn about the Coptic period and this full day schedule of 4 holy sites, and some lunch looked great. Almost immediately after booking, I received confirmation from Sun Pyramid tours that they received the order.
- The pick up was a little late but completely understandable given Cairo traffic and was not a problem with us. Our guide and driver picked us up, asked us our names and we were off.
They guide nor the driver said anything to us for the first 10 minutes. No intro, nothing. No questions about what we were interested in or anything. About 10 minutes into the ride he asked us where we were from and if it was the first time in Eqypt. Then we rode in silence for the next 20 minutes to the Coptic area.
We get out and my son and I are thinking ..”ok, maybe now we get into the history….”
What we got was “here we are in the Coptic area” that was it ONE SENTENCE!!’ we then walked in silence the 1/4 mile to the first church. I tried asking questions but it was clear that the language barrier was gonna be an issue (we had requested a private english speaking tour) and the guide struggled to answer.
We arrive st the first church .. there is another large tour group in the courtyard and two smaller groups. All three of those guides were deep in descriptions of the beautiful mosaics that were in the courtyard. At first I thought our guide was waiting for the courtyard to clear before giving us the story (or something). However the other groups made their way into the sanctuary up the steps … our guide looked at us and said the name of the church and motioned us to go up the stairs into the sanctuary… nothing about the church except that the Nile was under it .
We get into the sanctuary and the other groups are again are being talked to and told various facts and history — I kept trying to listen in— meanwhile
our guide looked at one of the paintings we were looking at (which had a name plate ) and told us that the picture was of the person listed on the name plate . He motioned us to the other two rooms in the church and said we could look around .. he offered ZERO commentary… he barely spoke at all!
After about 15 minutes of my son and I looking and taking pictures and occasionally using Google translate to understand some of the plaques, we made our way back into the courtyard and to the exit … the other groups ahead of us were still inside — presumably actually learning something…
We made our way — in silence — to the next church - we think it was the church or St George— it appeared that way … again he told us this was not Coptic but Greek but not Catholic… and that was it … he walked us through the sanctuary and then down to the basement and back up but said basically nothing … we asked a couple of questions but the answers were short and not confident …
we then walked in complete silence for 10 minutes through a cemetery… to a smaller church … again no information at all….
this then led to a 1/2 mile walk down a street to a Catholic cemetery… we walked through it in compete silence except when we asked us if cemeteraries were the same in the States … but that was it …nothing from our guide …
We walked back to another Catholic church that was also toured in silence and after asking what was next he said “Your lunch”.
We were both done … we asked him to get the car and drop us at the Grand Egyptian Museum and we could make our own way from there …
Bottom line… Remy may be a nice guy but he absolutely NOT a tour guide. My advice is that if you get a message that your tour is being fulfilled by Sun Pyramid tours, CANCEL IMMEDIATELY for a different company.
I paid $168 to Viator for this tour … which supposedly included admission fees (hint there were no fees paid at any place except the last little catholic church). The guide knew nothing about the tour topics and if he did he did not share them.
This place is unfortunately a scam and buyer beware …I will be making an inquiry to Viator about a refund but I doubt that will happen…
on the plus side the Grand Egyptian museum was OUTSTANDING!!!

The cave church (and the journey up there) was amazing! The hope that the zabaleen have is contagious. We had a good time with our guide, Shereen. She was knowledgeable and pleasant. The guide in the cave church was Magdy and he was wonderful as well.
Old Coptic Cairo was also beautiful and interesting, but the cave church was hard to beat.

The highlight of our day was not on the agenda but we all loved the new National Musuem of Egyptian Civilization. Our guide Dalia was passionate and knowledgeable and we enjoyed the Coptic churches and the drive to the cave church though the recycling centre.

To see the churches and learn more about the history was inspirational. To see their persecution was humbling.
