Elena is an outstanding tour guide—knowledgeable, engaging, and full of passion for the places she shows. She took me to fascinating spots I wouldn’t have discovered on my own, sharing interesting stories that brought everything to life. Highly recommend this tour for anyone looking to explore with a local expert!

Fantastic time! My first morning in Romania I spent 3 hours walking with Elena, learning her nation’s history. We walked, took the subway & a public bus, seeing different parts of this great city,
and learning its history along the way.
By the time we parted ways, I had developed feelings for the this country. Its contemporary story felt real. My respect for its people grew.
Walking and talking with a well versed guide like Elena was a gift. Feet on the ground was, for me, a step up from a ride-by experience.
Thank you!!!

Elena provided a relaxed and well informed tour of the many landmarks associated with Bucharest’s communist past and the revolution. Supplemented with historical photographs, Elena has very good knowledge of her country’s history and the places we visited. It didn’t feel rushed and we were free to ask anything we wanted. I’d highly recommend this tour if you want to know more about the recent history of Romania.
Response from Host, Jun 2025
Thank you for your curiosity, happy to enjoy the afternoon with you. Elena

Elena was amazing, not parroting rehearsed lines but chatting about Communism and its impact on the population as well as the cult of personality. It genuinely felt like walking with a friend. Elena even recommended an amazing restaurant and told me to contact her if I faced any issues as I was traveling alone. It's really challenging to get a handle on how Communism affected different post Soviet countries and Elena's narrative helped me tie together the threads and understand a comprehensive and complex narrative. Please take this tour if there's nothing else you do in Bucharest!
Response from Host, Jun 2025
Thank you so much for taking the time go write this recommendation, it is very rewarding to read messages like this from my travelers. Elena

Very informative, and learned from the Romanian perspective about living during the Communist days. Make sure to eat a good breakfast before the tour, there's quite a bit of walking.
Response from Host, Mar 2025
Thank you very much for your kind review.

I was lucky enough to have Elena to myself and what a treat. She was extremely knowledgeable, gave a real and true insight into how
Communism affected Bucharest in every way. Elena brought pictures with her which helped me as I could then visualise what happened in the past... If I hadn't done this tour, then I would have missed a lot of historical significant buildings if Elena hadn't pointed them out. Elena should do tours of other topics as she was clear, concise and interesting. Thank you Elena, I learned lots from you...

Thank you very much for the kind review.

The tour was very informative, Elena was amazing.
She was an absolutely lovely guide who catered for our needs exceptionally well. The tour was set at a great pace and we were able to stop and ask lots of questions.
Elena was very personable and gentile and knowledgeable in her approach. No request or question was too much trouble.
I would thoroughly recommend .
It was an enjoyable intimate group.
Would suggest this tour over large group tour with headphones/speakers
Great morning with Elena! Do not hesitate.
Loved the touch with old photographs!
It was subject that we knew little about but left with excellent knowledge and understanding.
Thank you

Where to even begin. For us it was very important to understand a bit more of Romania’s and Bucharest’s history and the impact that communism had on its people. Bucharest is such a mix of cultures and so many difficult situations and it’s amazing to see who they are today.
That been said .. Elena - is passionate, knowledgeable, and so so eager to share about her people, her country and her own experience as a daughter, sharing the challenges her own mother went through. Oh… and she got to practice her pretty impressive Spanish with us as well.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND this tour BUT make sure you book it with Elena. You will be in for a treat.

The tour guide, Elena, was brilliant. She was extremely informative and personable. The tour itself was very educational and thought provoking, having a small group made the tour more personal. Catching a tube and a tram as part of the tour added to the experience. I would highly recommend.
DAVID_G, Sep 2024
I have travelled the world, taking tours and writing about them. Often, these tours are superficial and show an altered image of the city. "Contrasts of Communism" is a rare exception. The tour offers a deep dive into the history of Bucharest and Romania. The traveller learns about real life and sees an actual city—touristic sights, hidden gems, and everyday practices. If you want to learn about life before, under, and after communism, this tour is for you.

I'm glad we did this tour! I highly recommend for anyone who is interested and curious about history. It gave us insight about an influential period in Romanian history and a better understanding of its impact on the society today. Elena was a wonderful tour guide, very accommodating, knowledgeable and happy to answer all of our questions. We appreciated the small tour size and attention we received.
Pamela_C, Apr 2024
Elena was so knowledgeable and pleasant. We learned a lot of Bucharest and Romania. Taking Metro and Tram was an added bonus to this walking tour. Highly recommend!
Siobhan_B, Jan 2024
Elena is an excellent guide. She is very friendly and knowledgeable, not just on the subject of the tour but also general Romanian history. She brought us to interesting places we never would have experienced on our own. She happily answered all our questions and recommended an amazing traditional Romanian restaurant. She truly went above and beyond during the day and her tour is a major highlight of our trip.
Vic_G, Dec 2023
We were so lucky to have Elena as our tour guide! She is so knowledgeable about the communist period of Romanian history and was a political science major in college; we asked so many questions, and she had all the answers! She also speaks incredible English and was extremely flexible with whatever we wanted to learn/do. She also gave us incredible recommendations as well about other things to do around the city! An amazing tour; we learned so much. Thank you Elena! Greatest tour guide ever!
Thanks,
Your friends from Los Angeles (Sophia and Victor)

Brilliant guide who gave great insight into the city’s communist history and how this still impacts life today. Hands down one of the best tours I’ve done!
Sean_W, Jun 2023
Elena was fantastic, full of so much knowledge on Romania's communist past and was able to answer any question that I had. Would absolutely recommend!!
Brian_S, Jun 2023
What a great tour. Got to see areasof the city you would never visit highlighting the communist period. Elena was fantastic and could bring the tour to life with stories of the powerful and the everyday people. Great knowledge shared in an accesable way.
Jon_V, Apr 2023
We enjoyed our tour with Elena.
She met us at our rented apartment and we took the Metro together to get downtown.
She helped us to understand the history of Romania over the last 100 years - focusing on the impacts of the communist regime. She shared photos with us which helped us comprehend some of the changes which occurred.
We covered a lot of ground - but were not rushed - we even had a few rest stops!
I’d recommend that you book a private tour with Elena. She can share with you in the first person as her family lived through the experience of the communist regime and it’s impacts.
Conchita_A, Apr 2023
Elena brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to this well organised and informed tour of the main communist era sights in Bucharest.
She combined a personally friendly and approachable style with excellent factual informaron and visits which were off the beaten track.
I fully recommend her walking tours.
Gustavo_O, Apr 2023
It was an amazing tour, Elena it not only a super nice person but also she knows soooo much about the history that we could not do a single question in which she did not know the answer! It was very interesting to hear all the stories about the communist times, especially by someone who dominates the theme! I have done a bunch of other tours in my life but this was one of the best by far
