Itineraries for Your Trip to Bucharest
1 Day in Bucharest for First Timers
Bucharest is Romania's most complete destination. As impressive as its castles, mountain landscapes, and medieval towns are, none reveal quite as much about this corner of Eastern Europe as the country's capital. Whether you want to experience history, culture, food, or nightlife, it’s all available with one day in Bucharest.
My first time in Bucharest came after weeks of exploring Romania, and I will admit, I felt a little overwhelmed. Nowhere else was I met with such a breadth and depth of things to do, and it became clear that a freewheeling approach wouldn’t cut it—I needed a plan and help, and maybe you do too. If so, here’s how to spend one day in Bucharest on your first visit.
While summers in the city are indeed hot, it's also wise to prepare for high humidity and afternoon thunderstorms.
If you only have time for one thing, make it a walk past the many landmarks dotting Victoriei Street.
For a 1-day Bucharest itinerary for first-timers, it's best to start by finding your feet in the city's historical center. Set off on a walking tour of Lipscani, the city’s Old Town, and a neighborhood packed with must-see Bucharest attractions. Make sure to take in the ornate details of the Stavropoleos Monastery, the historical courtyard of Manuc’s Inn, and the gorgeous modern interior of the Cărturești Carusel book shop. Afterward, head south to see relics of the city's Communist period of excess, such as Bucharest Union Square and the infamously oversized Palace of Parliament.
There's much more of Bucharest to explore after lunch, so start by following Victoriei Street to see its major civic landmarks and grand beaux-arts architecture. Stop along the way at the Romanian Athenaeum, a venue whose embellished ceiling is worth the interruption to see on a tour. To discover more local culture, find collections of Romanian art at the National Museum of Art, a short walk away, or join a food tour to learn how to tell your sarmale from your balmos—stuffed cabbage leaves and a creamy, cheesy polenta dish, respectively.
The best way to close out one day in Bucharest for first-timers really depends on your mood and interests. If you’re feeling energetic, then joining a pub crawl lets you roam around the city some more and get a taste of the city’s nightlife. A more laid-back option is an evening of wine-tasting, while ultimate relaxation can be found in the baths of Therme Bucharest, and some tours include transportation in addition to access.
