Itinerary

Your art historical tour of Provence begins with your pickup by minivan from Avignon. Over the course of six hours, follow in the footsteps of famous artist Vincent Van Gogh, one of the world’s most celebrated painters.

Stop in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence to see Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum where Van Gogh was institutionalized, this site became a natural subject of his and enjoy a tour of the asylum where Van Gogh painted his ‘Wheat Field’ series.

Finish your tour in the UNESCO-listed city of Arles. Admire the sleepy beauty of this riverside town, known to many as the landscape for Van Gogh’s famous paintings La maison jaune and Le jardin de l'hotel Dieu. Take some free time to wander the sun-washed streets and view settings of Van Gogh’s famous works like the Cafe Terrace at Night (Le café de nuit).

Wonderful for art lovers especially those who want to explore the life and surroundings of Van Gogh. Our guide, Jos was very knowledgeable about the subject as well as the geography and history of the locales that we visited. He was fluent in English and very enthusiastic and funny. Excellent fun and super interesting walk through the footsteps of Van Gogh in Arles and charming St Remy. Whether or not you’re an art fan, this tour includes local architecture, history, and lore. A pretty comfy van with enough stops. Eat before you go. Our guide Martine was a great driver and the best guide. She’s great!

If you are lucky enough to have Nicholas as your guide, you will have a wonderful experience. He has a wealth of knowledge about the region but also about a lot of other things, like wine and the environment necessary to grow the vines. Everything about this tour is enjoyable. We had just the right amount of time to take in each specific attraction while still allowing us the opportunity to wander a bit on our own afterwards .

This trip was more than we expected. It was a real Van Gogh emersion. The exact location of some of the places he painted specific pieces was an unusual connection to a painter. Interesting, informative and relaxing

This tour would be hard to do on your own and probably require a lot of research. It makes sense to let someone as generous, knowledgeable and friendly as Ghislain take you privately around in the comfort of a van to stop and see places and spaces where Van Gogh painted quite a few pieces. The hospital was excellent to visit. The key places in Arles were also good. If you’re looking for a day trip to Arles you could always begin with this tour in the morning and then stay for the afternoon and catch the train back to Avignon yourself. Thank you Ghislain. We had a really informative and friendly guide who answered all of our questions and remained flexible throughout the trip. Since the parking situation in Arles was pretty bad, he improvised and found a way to give us more time in Arles instead of wasting time trying to find parking. One highlight but otherwise disappointing

The psychiatric hospital at St. Remy de Provence was a memorable experience seeing the actual settings for Van Gogh’s paintings, very worthwhile. However, the Arles tour was very disappointing. Other than walking through a few streets which we could have done ourselves, the tour offered little to remember. Then a hurried trip back to Avignon. Not impressed overall.

Cultural and Historical Highlight

Great tour and tour guide. While the tour was focused on Van Gogh, we also learned a lot about the history of France and the Provence region from our very knowledgeable and friendly guide. It was very impactful to physically be in and see the region and areas that Vincent Van Gogh painted. It helped us understand the importance of these areas for the Van Gogh's life and why he chose to paint them. Arles is a wonderful town and we had time to roam and see the sights and taste the food. I highly recommend this tour.
