Itinerary

Your 3-hours sightseeing tour of historic Avignon begins in the morning. Meet your guide in a central location near the Pope’s Palace and stroll through the town’s historic center. As you walk, hear about Avignon’s extensive history, officially beginning with Roman conquest in the sixth century BC, though most renowned as the papal residence during the 14th and 15th centuries.

Follow medieval streets and alleys, and climb to the top of the city’s famous ramparts – medieval constructions that were restored in the 19th century. From atop the ancient walls, enjoy sweeping vistas of the Avignon city and the rushing Rhône River.

Next, head to Popes’ Palace, the world’s largest Gothic palace and a UNESCO-listed site, where you’ll have access to tour the building’s impressive interior. Learn about medieval life in the palace and explore galleries, fresco-adorned chapels, papal apartments and grand ceremonial rooms.

Finish your excursion with a stop to the Place de l’Horloge (Clock Tower Square), the main square in the heart of town from which the clock is – ironically – hardly visible. However, you’ll view the beautiful opera theater and city hall before heading to a historic local bar for a glass of Côtes du Rhône wine.

Your walking tour ends in central Avignon in the beginning of the afternoon (12.30 pm).

Emile was magnificent and we enjoyed both morning and afternoon tours with him to Pond Du Gard, Baux de Provence, We enjoyed a wonderful walking tour inside Avignon’s Papal Palace & old city walls. Our highlight was an afternoon drive yesterday to hike St.Remy, Les Baux De Provence, & then to hike out in the Southern countryside of France see the 2000 year old Pont Du Gard built by the Romans, A UNESCO World Heritage Site. 😊 We hopped all-aboard Tren Italia this morning to Paris. We thoroughly enjoyed our walking tour and look forward to our return to Avignon a one day.

Our guide was not very engaging and at time seemed to struggle. The palace had a better method of seeing this site for less money. She took us to the touristy shopping area. Ugh! There must have been something better to share in this lively town.

Great morning tour

This tour was a nice introduction to Avignon's key sites. Emil was knowledgeable and had many interesting anecdotes about the city's history, especially about about the popes and their palace. One note for those with mobility issues is that the palace has many steps. The wine tasting at the end was also interesting and a great way to end the tour!

Savvy guide makes the difference

Our guide was terrific. I actually paused to write down something he said — that a historic building that no one finds a new use for becomes “a quarry.” I enjoyed his personal touches about his grandfather. He had to hunt us down at one point when we got lost. I wish we could have seen the frescoes.

Insightful tour of the centre of Avignon

Ir was a very insightful tour with a friendly and very good local guide. We did the morning tour which includes the area around the popes palace and the place de l’horloge, as well as the visit inside the popes palace. We did not visit a big part of the city, but an important one. The tour ends with a stop at a very nice wine place where we were able to taste a white and a red wine from the Rhône.
