Your day tour to the Hobbiton™ Movie Set begins with a handy pickup from select central Auckland hotels: if you’re not staying at one of the hotels, make your own way there to meet your guide and small group. Admire the views as you’re driven south to the rolling farmland of the Waikato region, to Matamata.
Enjoy a guided tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set, where parts of “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” movies were filmed. Learn about movie-making history as you tour the 12-acre (4.8-hectare) set that was once a working sheep farm. See the hobbit holes, have an included drink at the Green Dragon Inn, and take cute photos on the set.
The tour ends with a transfer back to Auckland—you should even make it back in time for dinner in the City of Sails.

Hobbiton exceeded every expectation. Our driver Ark was exceptional — the whole experience felt personal, not just another tour. A dream come true for this Middle-earth fan.

We did this trip from Auckland. The van ride there and back is 2+ hours each way. We had time after arriving and before the tour started to visit the cafe and gift shop. Good food, sweet treats and friendly service - a good plan for lunch. It can be wet here. It rained non-stop during our visit. The Hobbiton facility supplied umbrellas and there were places to step out of the rain occasionally. Overall we felt comfortable. Dress appropriately - waterproof shoes with good traction are helpful. The trail had a few muddy spots, but overall the drainage was good and it was just wet.
You will have an opportunity to visit th interior of one of Theo Hobbit holes. It is supremely satisfying! You can sit in chairs, lay in beds and even climb into the bathtub if you like.
The Viator guide/driver we had (Ben) was fantastic! He was amusing, engaging and a good driver. The Hobbiton staff were also delightful. It seems to be a New Zealand thing and we love it!

The Hobbiton visit and experience was amazing. It was awe-inspiring to see where they filmed one of the best movies ever made.
But our tour guide, Jeoff, made it extra special. He was nice and kind and gave us tons of insight about New Zealand and gave us recommendations on what places to visit. He came prepared with snacks and water and made sure everyone was comfortable during the ride. He also accommodated anyone that needed to use the restroom and even made a pit stop for ice cream on the way home, which was icing on the cake.
Highly recommend using Cheeky Kiwi for this tour or any other tour in New Zealand!

It is absolutely live changing! I very highly recommend! Seeing Hobbiton has been on my bucket list for years, and our tour guide made, not only going to see the hobbit amazing, but the entire drive down and back was full of fun facts and rich new zealand culture. This was an amazing Tour! If you are a fan of the movies or books, this is a must see if you are ever in New Zealand. The tour guides at hobbiton were friendly, nice and told the best stories. They were always available to help with perfect photo opportunities.
Our driver Alessandro was AMAZING! I wasn’t looking forward to the two hour ride but his stories made the drive there and back so much more pleasant. He was so nice, funny and entertaining. I would love to take a tour with him again!

Great tour around Hobbiton. Chris, the guide, was first class. Her insights into the making of the film set were very interesting. The highlight of the tour was going inside one of the hobbit holes. Pleasantly surprised by the lack of commercialism in both the gift shop and cafe.

Beautiful setting, with not a very long trip from Auckland. Rolling hills with mountains in the background. Multiple flocks of sheep and cattle grazing in the hills along the way. The hobbit holes are amazing, with incredible attention to detail. Especially nice was seeing the interior of one of these homes. I’m glad I went.

If you are staying in Auckland and debating whether the two-hour drive to the Hobbiton Movie Set is worth the effort, the short answer is: Absolutely. Even if you aren't a die-hard Tolkien fan who can recite the lineage of Durin, the sheer level of craftsmanship and the surreal beauty of the Waikato landscape make it one of the most unique attractions in the world.
The Logistics: From "City of Sails" to "The Shire"
While Hobbiton is often associated with Auckland, it is actually located near the town of Matamata.
• Drive Time: Expect a 2-hour to 2.5-hour journey via State Highway 1 and 27.
• The Experience: Most visitors from Auckland book a full-day guided tour. This is highly recommended because the drive through the Waikato region is stunning, but the parking at "The Shires Rest" can get hectic. A tour lets you relax while a guide handles the "second breakfast" stops along the way.
The Tour Highlights
Once you arrive, you’re whisked away on a short bus ride into the 1,250-acre Alexander sheep farm. The transition from "modern farm" to "Middle-earth" is seamless.
1. The Hobbit Holes (Now with Interiors!)
As of late 2023, the experience changed significantly. Previously, you could only peek at the colorful doors. Now, the Bagshot Row™ interior experience allows you to actually step inside a fully realized Hobbit Hole. The attention to detail is staggering—think "cluttered cozy" with tiny hand-carved furniture, jars of pickled vegetables, and letters sitting on desks.
2. Bag End and the Party Tree
The walk up to Bag End (Bilbo and Frodo’s home) offers the iconic view overlooking the entire set. You’ll see the Party Tree and the pond where the Mill stands.
Pro Tip: Look closely at the Oak Tree above Bag End. It’s actually made of fiberglass and silk leaves imported from Taiwan—a testament to Peter Jackson’s legendary perfectionism.
3. The Green Dragon™ Inn
The tour concludes with a complimentary drink at the Green Dragon. They serve exclusive Southfarthing ales, cider, and non-alcoholic ginger beer that you can’t get anywhere else. Sitting by the roaring fire with a mug in hand is the ultimate "I'm really here" moment.
The Reality Check (The "Candid" Part)
• It’s Not a Solo Wander: You cannot explore the set on your own. You are part of a timed group (usually 20–30 people). It can feel a bit "assembly-line" at times as the next group follows closely behind.
• The Weather: The Shire is beautiful, but it’s an outdoor walking tour. If it’s raining, you’ll be given a large green umbrella, but you’ll still be tramping through some mud.
