Most hot-air balloon rides in Phoenix cost between US$199 and US$260. Still, most travelers consider taking a hot-air balloon ride to be well worth the cost. Soaring over the stunning Sonoran Desert and the rugged landscapes surrounding Phoenix as the sun rises or sets offers an unparalleled perspective. And the tour guides really go the extra mile, providing things such as a Champagne toast or light breakfast to make it an even more special experience.

Hot-air balloon rides in Phoenix typically last 1–2 hours. You should expect to spend around an hour actually floating above the Sonoran landscapes. The entire experience, from meet-up to landing, is generally around 3–4 hours though, to account for the pre-flight briefing, balloon inflation, the aerial adventure itself, and the post-landing pack-up.

A Phoenix hot-air balloon ride typically includes round-trip transportation to the launch site (though typically from a central meeting point, such as the operator’s office), as well as the ride itself in the company of an FAA–certified pilot. You’ll also get a pre-flight briefing and, in some instances, a post-flight breakfast and Champagne toast.

It depends what you want, as both options offer spectacular Sonoran Desert views. However, sunrise flights are typically more reliable, as the weather tends to be calmer in the early morning (no chance of high winds ruining the flight!). Sunset flights, meanwhile, are usually only offered in winter, and don’t come with the bonus of a post-flight breakfast.

Phoenix hot-air balloon rides depart from across the wider Phoenix and Scottsdale area, and it entirely depends on where the balloon operator’s office can be found. Typically, you’ll be expected to make your own way to the specified meeting point before enjoying round-trip transportation to the actual launch site. Check the listing carefully to ensure you can make it on time.

Most people wear comfortable, layered clothing for Phoenix hot-air balloon rides. Temps can be quite cool up in the balloon, especially during sunrise and sunset flights, so bring an extra light jacket or sweater to help stay warm, especially if the wind picks up. Avoid flowy clothing that could catch the wind, or anything that might fly off your person, including hats and loose scarves. Closed-toe shoes are also a good idea.

It depends on the operator, as most will have minimum age and height requirements. These tend to be around 5 years of age and 48 inches (122 centimeters) tall. Regardless, all passengers must be able to stand for the entirety of the flight, as children cannot be carried or sit on the floor of the basket. It’s also worth considering whether your child would actually enjoy a hot-air balloon experience before booking.

Yes, Phoenix hot-air balloon rides are safe. All rides are operated by FAA–certified pilots and are entirely weather dependent. Even the slightest unfavorable wind may lead to the experience being cancelled—however, keep in mind that this is for your own safety. However, it’s recommended that pregnant women, young children, or anyone with an injury or recent surgery don’t fly. Check your operator’s specific requirements before booking.

Although early morning hot-air balloon rides usually run year-round, the best time to book a ride in Phoenix is between November and March, when the weather is cooler and both sunrise and sunset flights are available. Summer tours typically launch at sunrise to beat the heat. Book early, especially during peak travel months.

To make the most of your experience, keep in mind that desert temperatures can shift, and the terrain is uneven at launch and landing sites—don’t be alarmed if you come back to earth with a bump. Arrive early for check-in and the safety briefing, so you don’t feel hurried. Finally, many tours end with a celebratory glass of sparkling wine, so plan accordingly if you’d like to take part.

There are plenty of things to do in Phoenix besides ballooning. In the Sonoran Desert itself, you can enjoy ATV and UTV excursions, among other things. Alternatively, explore Phoenix and Scottsdale on a walking tour, and pay a visit to the top museums and galleries, or the impressive botanic garden. You can also go on a day trip to the Grand Canyon or Sedona.
