A look into how the Colosseum & Palatine Hill were part of life in Ancient Rome

The tour covers the entirety of the open area of Palatine Hill and takes you through the first and second levels of the Colosseum. (It does not take you to the floor area of the Colosseum - we knew that ahead of time, but it is something to be aware of when booking this tour if that is what you are wanting). My wife & I each last visited Rome in 2000 - Palatine Hill has been excavated quite a bit more since that time. It was fascinating to see the newly excavated areas. Our guide did a great job of taking us “back in time” with the assistance of visual aids he brought along, which showed the layered view of what you see today, and then a transparent slide that shows what that same view likely looked like in ancient times. He really focused on what the daily experiences would have been like for people to live in the area, the different classes of people who would’ve gone to the Colosseum & what they would have done there for the day/days of the games. We liked that aspect quite a bit. Our tour was on a very hot day in July during a heat wave. The tour is almost exclusively outdoors, so our guide did his best to make sure we both stopped for water, and that he found shade for us to stand in while he talked to us about a particular area. There is an important word of warning for this tour: Make sure you provide your names to the tour operator *exactly* as your name appears on whatever supporting document (passport, driver’s license, etc) that you bring. This includes any middle name which also appears on your identification document, which is not customarily something you have to make sure to include for ticket reservations in the United States. The ID-to-ticketed-name matching is strictly enforced. One member of our group was denied entry to the Colosseum because the name on his ticket was a shortened version of the name on his identification. Also, we did not need to bring our actual passports with us - a picture of your ID carried on your phone was sufficient. (This is helpful if you are concerned about carrying your passport around in a city that has an unfortunate reputation for pickpocketers).

Llegamos muy justo y nuestro grupo ya había salido. La persona que esperaba a los que tenían que hacer el tour era de lo peor y pasó de ayudarnos. Menos mal que contactamos directamente con la chica con la que habíamos contratado y pudo meternos en un grupo posterior guiado por Giorgio que fue una maravilla.
