Know Before You Go: Visiting Xcaret

Xcaret Mexico travel itineraries could easily fill two days, but most people choose to pack the highlights into one. Start with the park's three underground rivers, in which you can don a life jacket and float through limestone cave systems fed by the Yucatán's cenote network.

Above ground, the Coral Reef Aquarium, Butterfly Pavilion, and Aviary showcase the region's biodiversity. The park also contains a small Maya archaeological site, a recreation of a traditional hacienda, and a chapel. Additionally, cultural performances run throughout the day, including the Papantla Flyers ceremony and pre-Hispanic dances. Finally, you should absolutely cap off your visit at the evening Xcaret México Espectacular production.

Xcaret is open year-round, but the dry season from December through April brings lower humidity, less rain, and warm temperatures that make outdoor Xcaret activities more comfortable. May through November is the rainy season—afternoon downpours are common, though mornings are often clear, so keep that in mind when you're planning.

Whatever the time of year, the park always opens at 8:30am, and arriving at the gate early is the best way to get ahead of the midday crowds at popular attractions including the underground rivers and the Butterfly Pavilion. However, make sure that you've booked your ticket in advance to lock in the date that best fits your schedule. As in most places, weekdays generally tend to be less packed than weekends.

Unlike many attractions in the Riviera Maya, Xcaret operates seven days a week, all year round, with no seasonal closures. Standard hours go from 8:30am to 10pm, giving you the chance to enjoy a full 13-plus hours at the park—more than enough time to tackle water activities, wildlife areas, and the evening show.

However, you can also book night-only tickets. Entry for those starts at 4pm, and the nightly Xcaret México Espectacular show—a theatrical production featuring more than 300 performers tracing Mexico's cultural history—begins around 7pm. (Access to this show is included with all admission types.)

Xcaret offers multiple admission levels. The basic ticket covers access to the park's 50-plus attractions, including underground rivers, wildlife exhibits, cultural performances, and the evening show. Upgrading to Xcaret Plus adds a buffet lunch, unlimited non-alcoholic drinks, a beer, locker access, and use of snorkeling equipment.

Then there are the night-only tickets, which are also available if you want to catch the evening show and explore the park after 4pm. Whichever way you slice it though, booking a tour with transportation from Cancun or Playa del Carmen hotels simplifies the logistics: Pickup, drop-off, and admission are handled for you.

Much of the fun of Xcaret involves getting in the water, so wear a swimsuit under lightweight, comfortable clothing and bring a change of dry clothes for the evening show. Water shoes or sport sandals with a strap are ideal for the rocky underground rivers and coral-lined beach areas.

Bring a hat and sunglasses for the outdoor wildlife trails, and note that a small waterproof bag or dry bag is useful for protecting your phone during river swims. Towels are available for rent or purchase if you don't pack one, while cash or a credit card will be needed to pay for souvenirs, photos, and optional activities.

Insider tip: Keep in mind that the park requires biodegradable sunscreen—products must contain titanium oxide or zinc oxide, so purchase a reef-safe option beforehand or pick up a sample while at the park.

Xcaret's main pathways and many of its cultural and wildlife exhibits are accessible to wheelchair users. The park rents wheelchairs—though a refundable deposit of US$40 and valid ID are required at pickup—and accessible restrooms are available throughout the grounds. However, the underground rivers and some jungle trail sections have uneven, rocky terrain that limits access.

If you or a member of your group uses a wheelchair and you've booked a tour with transportation, contact customer service in advance so the team can coordinate accessible vehicle arrangements and help plan a route through the park's most accessible areas.

Xcaret is easily done as a day trip from Playa del Carmen, but staying overnight within the complex lets you revisit the park at your own pace and explore other Grupo Xcaret attractions without rebooking transportation. The family-friendly Hotel Xcaret México offers all-ages suites with direct access to the park grounds. For those ages 16 and up, Hotel Xcaret Arte is a 900-suite, art-themed resort with 10 restaurants, a spa, and a design inspired by Mexican artists.

The clifftop Maya ruins at Tulum sit roughly 40 miles (65 kilometers) south of Xcaret, making it a popular add-on for travelers based in the Playa del Carmen area. The ruins of this ancient walled city perch above the Caribbean and only take about 90 minutes to explore with a guide.

However, if you'd rather not rush to do them both in one day, book a dedicated Tulum day trip before or after your Xcaret visit. That way, you can visit Tulum early in the morning when crowds and heat are both lighter, then save all the fun and attractions of Xcaret for another day.
