Today Vienna is home to the fourth Jewish community in its history. This fact alone points to the long and rich Jewish history of this city. Without doubt, the history of the Jewish people in this place has been very eventful and deeply interesting, albeit oftentimes tragic.
On this tour, we explore the oldest part of Vienna, the First district, where most traces and sites of Vienna’s rich Jewish past and present can be found: those of the first and significant Medieval Jewish community, and the magnificent achievements of the third, which was instrumental in fuelling Vienna’s cultural and economic thriving during the Founder’s time, Vienna's ‘Belle époque’.
Beyond these aspects, we gain a comprehensive overview of the entire history with the help of the excellent Jewish Museum of Vienna, whose two closely situated dependencies offer a vividly narrated insight into all aspects past and present, as well as an accessible archaeological excavation site of the Medieval synagogue.
