Early in the morning, our guide and driver will pick you up from your location and drive 70 km east of Ulaanbaatar to the world’s largest equestrian statue, a 40 m tall stainless-steel statue of mounted Genghis Khan. Upon entering the statue complex, there is a small museum, souvenir shop, and a lift that takes you to flights of stairs upwards to the top of the horse’s head allowing you to get a panoramic view of the surrounding grasslands. Father son trip.

We had an outstanding experience on our trip yesterday. It was just me and my son, and our driver was absolutely top notch—professional, relaxed, and genuinely enjoyable to spend time with. Not stuffy at all. He was more than willing to educate us about the area, culture, and daily life, and we were happy to listen and learn. We shared music along the way—both traditional and contemporary—which made the drive even better. We also exchanged ideas and a bit of language, which my son especially enjoyed. It felt less like a ride and more like a cultural exchange. Highly recommend to anyone traveling with family or looking for more than just transportation. Only “complaint” is the steep price. I think $50 could be easily shaved off.

This same tour, offered through Nomadic Hospitality Mongolia, was canceled 2 days before, with no explanation. A Mongolian friend called the agency for me. The excuse? No English guide available. I clicked on this other tour, with MJ as a guide. He called the night before to confirm, picked me up at my hotel right on time, and I had a wonderful day..

Once in a lifetime opportunity to bond with a nation over a meal.

A spectacular day with Bee and Soy. Sometimes you have an experience that you’ll carry for a lifetime. This was that day. Food, culture, customs, beliefs of the Mongolian people. Salted mountain gathered chives, steamed and fried sheep heart dumplings, boiled sheep leg, and steamed soup. In case you were wondering. BTW, if you scrape every particle of meat, gristle, and ligament off the bone it’s good for your health. Assuming it is a pasture raised animal that has grazed the wild steepes of Mongolia. Did I mention the evening ended with milk vodka, a distillation of buttermilk? Did I mention Genghis Khan and his son held that people under 40 shouldn’t drink, people over 60 can drink as much as they want, and people in their 50s should drink in moderation? Did I mention I may be under the influence of this delightfully tasty, spring water clear beverage as I write this review? In justification I am 68 years old. Bee taught the history of his nation, its underlying values, how the great Khan won control of half the known world, and how those values are a potential solution to today’s problems. I am literally halfway around the world and a lifetime of experience from my small, Midwest farm childhood but today I could feel the spirit of my Grandparents sharing this table.
