Wonderful experience! Guide was on time for hotel pick up, very nice clean vehicle. He was very informative on the drive to the national park. The ride was in beautiful country, my horse was well trained and was so much fun to ride. Again, the guide was very pleasant to speak with and gave alot of info about the Mongolian horse. Lunch was at a nice restaurant and I was provided with a tasty vegetarian meal. The final stop was at the statue, where we also enjoyed an informative tour of the museum. A great way to spend a day in Ulaanbaatar.

A good day out in the sun! Our guide Enhrgl was great: easy-going, informative and enthusiastic. He took some great photos of the horse ride. A couple of horses were skittish; we were led by ropes past traffic/cows for most of our ride. While we were eventually allowed to ride on our own when surroundings were calmer, I'm not sure if more experienced riders would enjoy being tied by ropes to the horse at the front. The ride was mainly past ger encampments, sadly not the most picturesque of landscapes at times. The hillside meditation centre was lovely but the statue complex unfortunately had the air of a tourist trap. Lunch at Big Sky Lodge was excellent with a home-cooked feel.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful review. We’re delighted to hear you enjoyed the sunny day and appreciated Enkhrgl’s guidance—he’ll be very happy to know his enthusiasm and photography stood out!

Lunch at Big Sky Resort was excellent. Bat was a charming guide to the Buddhist Meditation Center and it was well worth the effort to make the climb. That view was excellent!
I have enough riding experience that I would have much preferred to ride without my horse being led. My stirrups were not adjusted for my height. I was refused an adjustment until the kid leading my horse noticed I had removed my feet from the stirrups. (I prefer to ride bareback so that was an option I was comfortable with.) At this point my stirrups were adjusted to my comfort. I raised teenagers so found amusement in his looks of annoyance. It was the difference between asking to head back to the stables and continuing the ride.
The kid leading my horse watched TV or a movie on his phone, texted and called his friends. At one point he had a smack talk conversation with someone his age. That kid was herding horses from higher up the mountain to the valley we were in. It gave a sense of adventure to have his herd surround and pass us. I could have done without the hat slapping and shoulder punching between his buddy and the guy leading my horse.
Later in the ride the kid leading me almost walked his horse into a pole while on his phone.
I don’t know the relationship between Rara and the stable we used. Hopefully there are other options available in the future.
The reputation of horses here are independent and skittish, frankly I don’t blame them. Given the young person leading my horse I was skittish too.
I will seek an alternative horse riding experience before I leave Mongolia.

hank you for your honest feedback. We’re glad you enjoyed lunch at Big Sky Resort and Bat’s guidance at the Meditation Centre. We’re very sorry to hear about the issues during the horseback ride—this falls below our standards. Your concerns have been noted, and we are reviewing our partnership with the stable.

English speaking tour guide was super helpful and easy to converse with, horses are very safe, stunning national park, turtle rock and Chinggis Khan statue complex are great stops! Lunch was good! A winner across the board. Just be ready for UB traffic on the way back lol. Nothing the tour can do about that!
Response from Host, Oct 2024
Thanks a ton for the awesome feedback! So glad to hear you enjoyed the tour, and that the guide was helpful and easy to chat with. Happy you liked the horses, the national park. Yeah, UB traffic can be a bit much on the way back, but we do what we can. Hope to see you on another adventure soon!

Overall, this tour was disappointing. To begin, the tour did not go according to the itinerary as advertised. The tour advertised a morning horseback ride through Terelj National Park, but we began the tour at the Chinggis Khan Statue Complex, which was supposed to be visited in the afternoon. It's possible there may have been an issue with the horses in the morning, but the tour guide didn't provide an explanation for the change. Second, contrary to the tour package, no helmets were available or offered for the horseback ride. The owner of the horses didn't speak English and got annoyed/frustrated with us when those of us on the tour didn't understand his instructions. The actual tour guide didn't join because there weren't enough horses. Probably best to have the company's tour guide join, especially if it is known that the horse owner doesn't speak English. Third, the horseback ride got cut short because one of the horses got spooked and the person on that horse fell off, no fault of that person. For about 30-40 minutes we traversed what seemed like the backyard of a community of Gers and never ventured into the forest to observe the natural scenery as advertised by the photos. Fourth, communication was spotty with the tour company. The itinerary said the pickup would be at 0800 in the hotel lobby. But no one showed up in the lobby at 0800. When I contacted the tour company, they said a notice had been sent that the pickup time got pushed to 0900. I didn't receive such a notice. It's possible technological issues played a factor, but I didn't hear about the change. Fifth, the tour guide, while very friendly and kind, was inexperienced. He took a hands-off approach and let us roam the Chinggis Khan Statue complex, when he should have taken us through the exhibits providing background regarding the artifacts. When asked, he did provide information, but those of us on the tour had to inquire first. All that said, it was a neat experience seeing Mongolia and one of its national parks. The tour guide did give us latitude to let us stop at various places we wanted to take photos and was good about fielding our questions. He also made sure we were comfortable and had ample time to take photos. With more experience, I'm sure he can be an even better tour guide.

I’m very happy with this tour. The guides were very nice and accommodating and even sent a car to pick me up when they realized I got into the wrong bus. The group was small too (only 4 pax) and around the same age, so great bonding experience.

Thank you so much for your kind words! We're delighted to hear that you had a wonderful experience on our tour. It's fantastic to know that our guides were able to provide the support you needed, and that the small group size contributed to a great bonding experience.

My guide Andy was really nice and have a lot of mongolian experience to share.
The National Park Gorkhi-Terelj is beautiful and closed to UB, so perfect for the one day excurtion.
Horse was nice, so pleasant tour with him and the guide.

Terelj National Park Morning Horseback Ride
Horseback Riding

It was a morning trip on a Sunday morning. We are a couple, and there was another couple in our van. The trip was very well timed, and we got what we expected. We first were a bit scared because we had not any previous expierence riding the horse or mountain climbing (which was optional), but we managed with both very successfully: we climed on the Turtke rock and rided the horses, and it was marvellous. Our guide was a young guy, very friendly and helpful in every way. We recommend this tour to those who would love to escape from the city for half a day and enjoy nature and beautiful landscapes.
Response from Host, Aug 2024
Thanks for the review! We’re glad you had a great time and felt comfortable despite being new to horseback riding and climbing. Happy to hear you enjoyed the nature and the company. Hope to see you again for another escape from the city!

I did not have much time in Ulaanbaatar and that tour gave me the chance to experience some of the highlights in 1 day. Horse riding was something to remember and also the statue complex of Chinggis Khan is a must see when in Mongolia. Not any other package offered that in 1 day. Lunch was also tasty in a very local, truly Mongolian restaurant. Bayar's speaks English like a native speaker and at the end of the tour I forgot that I had booked a tour with a company. I thought that I was out in the countryside with a friend.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
The pleasure was ours Michael! We hope to see you out in the country side with us next year!

This was a great way to see a small piece of Mongolian countryside when I only had one site-seeing day in Ulaanbaatar. The tour was efficiently run and hosted by an exceptionally warm, interesting and hospitable young woman, Tunya.
If you are unfamiliar with horse riding the guides are very patient and thoughtful - although it is tough on your body if you're not used to it.
One limitation was the lack of prior information and planning about what you should wear / take with you - so some tips:
- Horses don't like 'flappy' clothes so don't rely on having too many loose items on
- It's not advised to wear a backpack while riding so be sure to have something on with pockets to carry your camera etc
- Helmets are not included in this tour, so if that's something important to you, perhaps contact the organisers in advance
- You are riding for a good 2-3 hours so be sure to carry sunscreen / hat / light neck scarf etc with you
- There are a lot of horse flies that follow you, so some insect repellent spray might be handy if you happen to be travelling with some
Overall a great experience with lovely guides.

Eric picked me up at the hotel right on time, and during the ride to the Chinggis memorial and the national park, gave me a fascinating overview of Mongolian history and culture with his perfect English. The horseback riding was amazing and the the scenery gorgeous. Eric was the best guide I’ve ever had, he even brought me a birthday cake and sang happy birthday!!
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Thank you for taking the time to leave such a wonderful review! We're overjoyed to hear that Eric made your Terelj National Park horseback riding experience so memorable, especially with the birthday surprise! It's great to know that the history and culture overview added depth to your adventure. We’ll be sure to pass your compliments along to Eric. We look forward to welcoming you back for more adventures.

This was a good experience for riders who are relatively new to the activity. The horses were tame and the guides would lead you if you were not experienced. Beautiful scenery. Trip included a visit to the giant statue of Chenggis Khan which describes the history of the early Mongols in several nice displays.

This was an absolutely fantastic day trip - I would highly recommend to everyone. Our tour guide Yogi was funny, vibrant, and an excellent host. He was very knowledgeable about the area and his English was great. Not only this but he was very well prepared with sun cream, stops at local shops for snacks and water, and he even let me borrow his cap as I had forgotten mine. The horse riding is the best way to see this beautiful country and we ate lunch at the house of a local family. The views are stunning and there is lots to see out of the window as you drive out to the museum and horse ranch. I traveled by myself but met some amazing people from the US on the tour and it was a fantastic day.
The local team were also very accommodating and even managed to help me change the day of my trip when I had a last minute change to my schedule. Of course this would not always be possible but there was someone there to answer the phone late evening and they did everything they could to help. Lucky for me it all worked out.
Huge thank you to Yogi and the team!
Michael D, Jul 2017
This was a fantastic day out with Yogi our guide. He was a great English speaker with a wide range of knowledge and a real heart for his country and its future. The places visited were just mighty. We never felt rushed and so felt we had plenty of time to soak in the awesome scenery. A must do trip. Thanks Yogi.

We had a great day in the countryside riding horses. It was my girlfriend's first time on a horse and the guides took great care to make sure she was comfortable and safe. The lunch in a yurt was also a really nice touch. We also got to visit a Monastery in Ulaanbaatar in the morning before heading out to the National Park, and had a brief stop at Turtle Rock for a few pictures on the way back to the city. This was a wonderful way to spend a day away from the congestion and traffic of Ulaanbaatar.
Steve.mcb, Mar 2017
As I only had a few days in Ulaan Baatar, this was a very good selection to visit one of the nearby National Parks and see some of the beautiful countryside. To their credit, the local tour company went ahead with this tour despite it being only one person. The 4WD vehicle and driver were extremely good, and in fact the Company Rara Avis have been given an award for best-in-class transportation, including safety. My guide Tuvy Tuvshin was informative and excellent. Although the tour did not formally include a visit to the Genghis Khan Museum, they offered to include it a no extra charge aside from a minimal entry fee. The scenery in Terelj National Park was awesome, particularly so with deep blue skies and the mountains partially snow covered. After a short initial horse ride we had a lunch of Mongolian stew at a local house in the national park, which was really nice as the host family were super friendly. Then continued on the horse ride for several hours in the afternoon, which I enjoyed immensely - my horse Alag was very steady and surefooted, and the saddle surprisingly comfortable. Loved riding through the trees near the river. So overall a fantastic day. One piece of feedback for Viator ....I choose this tour over another tour because I wanted to do as much as possible and it indicated 8 hours in reality the tour is not that long so you should correct the time. Lastly thanks for applying the discount retroactively as a first time introduction after joining. Appreciated.

This was the absolute highlight of my trip to Mongolia! Enjoyed a magical day exploring this beautiful country. The Genghis Khan monument is incredible and well worth the visit - be sure to get kitted up in traditional attire for a photo. The horseback riding itself was fun and suitable for absolute novices, such as myself, and the more advanced rider. We had a delicious lunch in a traditional home. And our guide was superb - very knowledgeable and friendly. Highly recommended :

This was a really fun tour with an excellent and knowledgeable guide. Would recommend for anyone wanting a quick tour to see a bit of the Mongolian countryside.
Timothy_M, Nov 2016
This tour made our brief journey to Mongolia one of the most special moments ever, and now I wish I would've scheduled more time in this beautiful country!
Our guide, Billy, picked us up at our hotel at 9 a.m. We liked Billy immediately! He was warm and friendly, very knowledgeable about his country, and answered all of our touristy questions. And he spoke excellent English, which was great, because my wife and I speak nothing English.
After a drive through Ulaanbator where Billy pointed out numerous locations of interest, we visited the Ghengis Khaan monument. What a sight! The stainless-steel statue is huge and contains a museum inside. As a history geek, I appreciated all the displays, like the local artifacts, attire of the ancient Mongolians and the various recreations. Neat gift shop, too. gave us a chance to buy some Christmas gifts for family back home.
As cool as that was, the horseback riding at Gorkhi Terelj National Park was the highlight of this entire trip. As guaranteed, this was a small, intimate group - just me, my wife, Billy and the nomad who owns the horses! He didn't speak any English, but he was full of smiles the entire time! I think he enjoyed watching us having a great time as much as we enjoyed participating in this tour! We had a traditional, Mongolian lunch prior to our journey which aided in keeping us warm it was late November and there was snow on the ground.
The horses were well-behaved and calm. It's apparent a lot of love and care has gone into their training, so I you're a novice horseback rider like me, don't worry! These fellas are very manageable. The ride was about three hours around the park, and despite being cold, I couldn't help removing my gloves and snapping dozens of photos. We even trotted through a couple villages before wrapping up. We hit the early-evening traffic on the way back to our hotel, but that just gave me more time to interrogate Billy about life in Mongolia!
A tour, excellent guides, and I highly recommend this for anyone visiting Mongolia!
Nicholas W, Nov 2016
Had a fantastic day on this tour. I was surprised that I was the only person on the day, talk about a small group! My guide for the day was Tuvshin, who was absolutely brilliant. He spoke excellent English and is very knowledgeable about the area, and answered all my dumb questions. Got the opportunity to see the Genghis Khan statue in addition to the horse riding which was a really nice bonus. I did my day tour in late October, and although there was snow all over, it was no problem and not too cold. After a lunch of local Mongolian food in a Ger it was time for the horse riding. Only my second time on a horse, but they we well behaved and no problem. Even got a chance to open them up for a bit of a gallop over the snowy fields, awesome!. There's loads to see on this tour and it is an incredible day out. The tour company, and my guide were extremely professional. I was picked up at my hotel exactly on time in a brand new 4x4 truck, and dropped back off at the end of the day. Would highly recommend this excellent day tour.
Tanawat K, Nov 2016
The trip was awesome!
I was really impressed with the local guide name Tuvshin. Not only he can speak English fluently, but also enlight me in every aspects i wanted to know. The trip itself was amazing, riding ox cart and horses through snow field, having traditional lunch at GerCamp with local fam!
JohnJustin_H, Oct 2016
This tour turned out to include both the Ghengis Khaan statue and the highlights of Terelj Park...in addition to three hours of horse back riding, which was perfect. I did not like the statue very much but it is a must see when in UB so I am glad I checked it off the list. Turtle Rock was nice to see but by far the best thing was riding through the park on the horses. The man managing the horses was quite a character and the landscape truly beautiful. This was the highlight of my stay in Mongolia. Definitely go horseback riding while you are there.
Tamara P, Sep 2016
This was an amazing tour, me and my husband decided to come to Mongolia for our honeymoon and I have not regretted a single moment.
Our tour was perfect, our guide was amazing and gave us so much information about Mongolia.
I'm definitely going to come back one day.
Patricia P, Aug 2016
A trip to Mongolia is not completed until you ride a horse through the Mongolian steppe. And this tour will make this come true! Gorkhi Terelj National Park is a must-see while in Ulaanbaatar, and is a great day trip from the capital. Our guide Tuvshin had organized a visit to a local nomadic family, where we enjoyed our lunch composed of traditional dumpling soup, sun-dried yogurt, homemade butter, and milk tea. We then mounted our horses and headed with Tuvshin and a local nomadic guide inside the park. The whole afternoon was pure magic, as we galloped through the open steppes. We highly recommend Tuvshin as a guide - perfect English, flawless organization, and highly informative! He shared with us so much about Mongolian history, about the life of the nomads, the proper ger etiquette, just a great way to learn about Mongolia and its culture.
Iwona A, Aug 2016
Our trip was a amazing! We had never done anything like it and had a wonderful day we will never forget! Our tour guide Tuvshin was very considerate and explained everything to us thoroughly and answered all our questions, he was full of stories and made the tour so interesting, we found out so much that day. We are vegetarians and Tuvshin being the great guide he is, researched restaurants especially for us. We even managed to see landmarks on the way to the horses and Tuvshin arranged everything for us beforehand! The only thing we would've changed is more time on the horses, the day was quite short and we would've preferred to have spent more time on the horses. But apart from that it was an amazing experience and next time we are in Mongolia we will definitely rebook with this company!
