Edinburgh Castle through a Scottish lens
My visit to Edinburgh Castle was truly memorable thanks to Max. His tour stood out because he presented the history from a genuine Scottish perspective, making it feel authentic and engaging. Instead of just listing facts, he connected events to Scotland’s identity, struggles, and culture. His storytelling made key figures and moments come alive, and his explanations were clear and well-paced. The experience felt much richer than a typical guided tour. I would recommend exploring the castle with a guide if you want a deeper and more meaningful understanding of its history.

Excellent walking tour
We enjoyed an excellent walking tour with our guide, Stuart, on our first day in Edinburgh. He was extremely informative and gave us such interesting information that would not be included in a larger group tour. He geared the information to things he knew we would be interested in, and he was always willing to answer our questions with patience. We would highly recommend this tour and Stuart as a tour guide for anyone traveling to Edinburgh.

Worth the time and money!
Our tourguide was amazing! Veni had so much information to share about the history of Edinburgh, focusing on the Royal Mile and castle. She was engaging, kept us interested in what came next and was an all rounnd joy. I highly recommend this tour and Mercat Tours!

Excellent for one day around the city.
Excellent city centre tour. Easy to find bus stops plus comfortable earphones with informative details of the city in multiple languages. Great for those with limited energy to get around the city and its top attractions.
We were informed these tickets covered red and blue route when purchasing, please note they do not. Red route only. There is another company Big Bus (also on Viator) that do the blue and red route. Plus another company that offer a green route.
The red route is perfect for a days exploring, red and blue for 2 days.

Amazing tour of an amazing city!
This is our first time to Edinburgh and this tour gave us a nice overview of Old Town and the castle. Our guide Graeme was extremely knowledgeable about the history of his home town and was friendly and fielded all questions. He spurred several ideas for other things we are going to do on this trip. Thank you G!

Couldn’t be better
The guide, Josh, was punctual and knowledgeable. It was great to get information about Old Town Edinburgh in addition to the Harry Potter information. He made sure we stuck together (it’s a very busy city) and out of danger (crossing streets). Will look into his company for more tours-hopefully with Josh as the guide.

Seeing Scotland
This is a walking tour that takes you all over the city. If you are only in Scotland for a short time then it shows you pretty much the most you can see in a day. Ben was our tour guide and he was fantastic, I would definitely recommend him to anyone! It is a lot of walking so be prepared for that.

Wonderful day with Andre
Andre was wonderful! We learned so much in this private walking tour. He made sure we were near the castle at 1 since my daughter wanted to hear and see the cannon. He showed us the clock that has all the different things in it. He made 6 hours go by quickly

Tour was really fun and...
Tour was really fun and informative! Kaffe knew a lot about the history of the city, the buildings and what happened at each location. Some things funny, some things not so funny. Even the rain couldnt dampen his spirit as he proceeded to guide us with a smile. 10/10 would recommend!

I've been to Edinburgh...
I've been to Edinburgh many times and done a lot of ghost tours but this was the best one I've been on. No costumes, no gimmicks, just a genuinely informative tour of all things gruesome and grisly. Ross, our guide, knew his stuff but was very personable and approachable. I also appreciated that he didn't rush us and made sure to wait for everyone to catch up. I learnt new things and visited new places so this really is a tour not to be missed

Great time :)
Great experience and an awesome way to learn about the town's history, stories and old tales. Dr.Knox was particularly great and witty throughout the whole time, worth the price too, I highly recommend (He takes you to places not available to the regular public).

It’s dark, but it’s also interesting and sometimes funny
The guide provided great information about the less pleasant aspects of Edinburgh’s history (some hilarious, some disturbing) as a starter and some background before we even got to the vaults. Once there we learned about what they were and how their use changed over time from practical to more insidious. For those that don’t do well in tight, unfamiliar surroundings like I do, it was a little much for me at the start, however the information and stories are a great distraction and it seems to go by quickly. I was glad I stuck it out to the end. The guide did a good job sharing what he knows of the history and his own experiences having spent decades going into the vaults. Which gives it a current rather than just historical accounting.
