When to visit

St. Andrews is at its best between May and September when temperatures are mild and sometimes warm, and daylight hours are long. The town can get fairly busy in July and August, however, when summer vacations are in full swing. May is your best bet for avoiding the biggest crowds while enjoying the best conditions. Winters are typically cold, wet, and gloomy.

Getting around

The town itself is small enough to get around on foot. The main attractions—including the Old Course, St. Andrews Castle, and the University of St. Andrews—are all within a 10–15-minute walk of each other. For any trips further afield, catch a bus from St. Andrews Bus Station in the center of town; from here, you can reach destinations around Fife, including Leuchars, home to the closest train station.

Traveler tips

If you’re planning to make lots of bus journeys in one day—to visit the fishing communities strung along the East Neuk, for example—you can buy a Stagecoach DayRider ticket for unlimited rides. A North East Fife DayRider ticket covers trips to St. Andrews, the East Neuk, Falkland, and Dundee. A MegaRider ticket is valid for seven days. Tickets can be purchased on board.
