Fumi was such a pleasant and informative tour guide for our Tuna Auction experience. He had such fun and detailed explanations, including props and handouts, for the entire process, which was a lot more than other tours provided. We were fortunate enough to win the lottery to be at the lower level, unfortunately did not know ahead of time that when submitting for lottery application you also need to include the tour guide so Fumi was not able to go down to the lower floor with us, so please note that when submitting application! But Fumi did his best to explain everything ahead of time which was great. For such an early start, we were thankful to be in Fumi's hands and not have to navigate our way around or try to understand what was going on. This was one of the highlights of our trips so thank you Fumi!

Thank you Fumi for a fantastic tour of the fish market! Fumi made sure we had the best spots to view all the action of the auction, and he took us to parts of the market where tourists don’t go. We learned so much, not only about the fish market, but also about the Japanese diet, key ingredients, and how to properly eat sushi (turns out I’ve been doing it all wrong!)! We also had the most delicious sushi breakfast made for us by a professional sushi chef and visited the best shopping spots in the inner market at the end. This tour is the highlight of our trip so far, and we can highly recommend it!

This is a good must tour to understand the tuna culture in Japan. Hard to wake up early, but absolutely worth it. Fumi is an excellent guide, highly professional and knowledgeable, not only about the market but Japanese culture. Highly recommend!

This is the only way to see the tuna auction. Fumi is so energetic (which is important at 430 AM) and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this excellent tour.

Fumi was such a wonderful guide at the auction! Great communication before our trip with very clear directions on how to apply for the auction viewing lottery! And he was SO thorough and educational during the tour - complete with picture taking, a history lesson of Japan and Japanese culture, and fun handouts with a recap of what we saw during the tour. He was so informative, others around us asked him a number of questions! 😄

We cannot express how great of an experience this private tour was! For years we have been looking forward to visiting Tokyo, Japan and specifically the Toyosu Market to witness the live tuna auction. This was hands-down the best private tour we have had! Fumi (our tour guide) was phenomenal! Extremely knowledgeable on the market and the auction. Very friendly and professional as well. He went above and beyond any expectations! We had a group of 5 and it was perfect. We highly recommend this tour!

Was worth the cost of about $125 pp on current exchange rate. Fumi came to our Ginza hotel at 430am to arrange the taxi to Toyosu market (we reimbursed him). After a 15,min ride we got off, and went into the general public area overlooking the laid out tuna (no one there yet in viewing area) and explained about the different tuna and the buying system.we were about to see. He had communicated with us 1 month before about how to lottery for the closest viewing area and we were successful. We then checked in to the 2nd floor lotteries viewing area to see the auction and Fumi interpreted what number and how much (all done by hand signals). We were then taken to a little sushi shop in the same complex which normally doesn’t take reservations but our guide must have a relationship because we got seated before some others who were waiting in line. We paid for the breakfast and it was amazing sushi. We then go to go through an “authorized person only door” to the professional fish market to see quickly the middlemen selling to restaurateurs. The rest of the time was visiting various shops in the complex to learn about Japanese cooking with low/no pressure purchasing for us of dashi soup stock and green tea and a couple of Toyosu market bags, and then going onto the roof to look over Tokyo bay and some information on earthquake mitigation. Very efficient and I felt value added tour given the maze of corridors we had to navigate. I also liked being able to ask what people were queueing for to see if I might want to come back later. Fumi is very knowledgeable and has amazing handouts and a binder full of very interesting and instructional info on seafood, cooking, earthquakes etc, but does have very strongly accented English which may take a little time getting used to. Just ask him to repeat if you didn’t catch something. He is also great about taking pictures. All the guards and staff seemed to know Fumi. Thanks Fumi!

It’s a long morning, but so educational & worth it. We were picked up by Fumi at our hotel at 4:30am, we then took a taxi to the fish auction. We reimbursed him for the taxi ride. The auction was huge, fast paced, and fun to watch! After the auction, we enjoyed a sushi breakfast. It was the best sushi I had during my 18 day stay in Japan. Then, Fumi walked us all around the market, educating us about all kinds of things & providing samples. Fun morning, I’d recommend it!

Fumi provided an in depth overview of the fish market from source to table. It was extra valuable to get his commentary and explanations during the auctioning process as the fish sales move at a blistering fast pace. He then gave us a nice tour of the Toyosu Market where we were able to see many specialty vendor stalls.
My favorite part was the way Fumi expertly used handouts and diagramatic toys to help keep us engaged given the activity starts at a time of day when most individuals would be tired and sleeping.
This was an amazing and worthwhile experience!

Our family had an unbelievably incredible day at the Toyosu market thanks to our guide Fumi. Due to early tour times required of the destination we began our day bright and early with Fumi meeting us curbside of our hotel with taxis waiting. Upon arrival at the destination he escorted us throughout the facility explaining to us the significance of the fish auction, its cultural importance and also its regional, national and also global impact of not just seafood, but also Japanese delicacies. The day only began with the fish auction where our group had to divide into two as some had access to the closer viewing area of the auction grounds and process, but he made sure we all knew and stuck with the plan to regroup. I was fortunate enough to have made it to the better viewing area, but not only did he have the best spot staked out for my other family members, he spoke to them the entire time and taught them bits and pieces of information of the auction process as well as the impact that entire facility provides. To be honest although I had the better viewing position of the auction, I feel that their view was just as good but the things they learned was more impactful. When the auction was done, we continued the tour of the market getting to see and experience things that probably not many others would get to do. We did end up at a floor of retail shops where the quality of goods was top notch. This was the location of things which were restaurant quality from teas to produce to knives and snacks the amount of things to see, sample and purchase were incredible. Having Fumi guide and translate for us was invaluable throughout this portion and his generosity was incredible as he actually purchased items for us to take back home. If one family member enjoyed something, we ended up leaving their shop with a small bag of goods and this happened for many of us in the group. At many of these shops as well, the owners were so generous with samples but it was so significant to have Fumi there to explain what it was, or what to grab from the shelf if we wanted to purchase something (other than the gifts he had bought for us). Finally, we ended up at a small row of restaurants which were significant for their sushi and fresh seafood. The one which was picked out was important as our day had started very early and now we were going to have sushi for breakfast. The restaurant itself was incredible and to have an omakase set to eat of the freshest, highest quality sushi was an experience I won’t forget and will probably always have in the back of my mind when eating sushi in the future. Please note the most important thing for all of this was that Fumi came prepared. He was a plethora of knowledge and information, but he came with more. He had a literal binder of information of facts and information to help us on our tour. He had handouts and visual guides and even small props which made the entire experience so much easier to enjoy. We learned so many things that it is hard to describe. From the auction warehouse and the craziness of understanding the auction process, to the different types of knives to different types of seaweed and pickled vegetables he provided so much information which each of us learned some new facts or tidbits of info which will always stick. Probably the thing which I think was most impactful was learning about how everything is done with such great pride and intent and their are actually correct ways to convey it back as a means of respect. For example was going to the most authentic sushi restaurant any of us have ever been in and knowing the most minute details in order to eat and enjoy each item served. It truly was an experience as everything is made with such a high level of artistry and craft but just as much goes into you eating each piece a specific way or order as a means to fully enjoy the experience and to convey respect to the Itamae, or master sushi chefs. Our day concluded with Fumi walking with us a short way as we went to the teamLabs location for the rest of our outing. He departed when we got there but the experience he provided, the things he taught us and the generosity he shared were such an integral part of making this one of the most memorable days we had in our time in Japan. A great way to start your day! Fumi is an amazing guide, he was very personable, accommodating, and incredibly knowledgable. Fumi also helped us get a breakfast reservation for sushi at the market, it was our favorite breakfast experience in Tokyo. Would do again if we were back in the area. We all highly recommend this experience, it's worth every penny.

Our tour guide Fumi met us in our hotel lobby at 4:30 am sharp. He arranged two taxi cabs to take us to Toyosu Market. This was not included in the fee for the tour but it was fantastic that he took care of the reservation so we had one less thing to worry about! As soon as we arrived, Fumi had loads of information to share about the history of the new fish market vs. the old fish market. I hope this is not a spoiler, but my absolute favorite thing about the tour were the comic strip handouts with informational content for all aspects of the tour i.e. how to eat sushi, the process of preparing fish for sushi and so much more! Before we arrived in Japan, Fumi communicated information to us about how to enter the lottery to get a spot on the observation deck for the auction and luckily, even though we had to break up into two groups, both our groups were able to secure a spot in the lottery on the observation deck. We were able to view the auction from a spot right above the auction floor (behind a glass) and we were able to hear/see everything. After the auction, Fumi secured a reservation for us at a small sushi shop. Again, not included in the fee for the tour but so nice to be able to walk up and have a spot to eat sushi for breakfast! The tour continued through the market with stops at different vendors and the comic strips kept coming! Throughout the tour I noticed other tourists stopping to listen in because Fumi was dishing out so much knowledge! I definitely recommend doing this tour if it is your first time to Toyosu Market as you will get so much more out of your visit than just blindly wandering around.

We had a great time. Fumi had a lot of prepared information in hand outs and was well prepared for the tour. The auction moved fast and was interesting! Hit the shops after. Lots of food information and even a knife shop. Breakfast not included

Fumi was very knowledgeable with the fish market. He helped us request open observation deck lottery. We also walked the main floor where other seafood were sold - shrimp, crab, octopus, eel, etc. He made reservations for breakfast, toured and sampled various vendors - pickled vegetables, matcha, sake, nori, bakery, dairy, etc. We learned a lot and can appreciate sashimi and sushi even more!

We are so glad we did this tour - even if we had to get up at the crack of dawn. Our guide, Fumi, contacted us in advance and even reminded me, when it was time to apply for the lottery. Sadly, we did not get into the lottery, but we still had an amazing time. We had an excellent viewing spot, where we could see much of the auction and Fumi had all sorts of material to help us understand what we were seeing. After the auction, we had the most amazing sushi breakfast. Do note, the cost of breakfast is not included, nor is the taxi to the auction. However, they were both worth it. After breakfast, he walked us around the market, where he explained different items and we got to try several new things.
The only unfortunate thing about the whole experience was Fumi's accent. He was very kind and had a lot of knowledge and information to share. Sadly, he was extremely difficult to understand. I am hard of hearing and this added to the challenge, but my family assured me that even they were having a really difficult time understanding him. We even asked him to speak slower but that did not help.

From the day I booked the tour our guide Fumi was in contact with me. Making sure we applied for the tuna auction lottery to be able to go to the viewing platform - which we were successful in. Fumi met us in our hotel lobby arranged the taxi and then gave us a very comprehensive explanation of the workings of the tuna auctions. Super interesting. We then went for a tour of the wholesale markets where Fumi showed us various speciality Japanese foods and the knives used by the Japanese chefs. Who knew there are 25 knives just for tuna. Fumi was very passionate and explained everything well. My whole family enjoyed the tour and learnt a lot about tuna auctions and Japanese culture and history.

Learning about the fish auction and the development of the new fish market was fascinating. Our guide, Fumi, was very passionate with teaching us about the auction, the building, the adjoining market, and the sushi lunch experience. He provided visual aids for the topics to strengthen our understandings. It was a very early start to the day and well worth it!
