Great tour learning about Japanese traditions, local specialties and the Shibuya area with guide Hoshi. We had a variety of different types of Japanese dumplings, checked out the famous Shibuya Scramble and savored tuna prepared in several cooking styles as we walked through the bustling streets of Shibuya. Finished our tour with a traditional pancake with red bean filling! Great tour, tasty food and an awesome guide - Hoshi!

Great intro to Shibuya, and fantastically delicious food. There's not a huge variety here - restaurants in Japan seem to specialize, so we got several variations on gyoza and then several variations on tuna followed by a dessert. But we like gyoza and tuna, and the variations were all incredibly tasty. And we wouldn't have found any of the restaurants on our own, so we were very satisfied.

We have done at least 30 food tours around the World. This absolutely ranks as one of the best. Our guide, Naruto, was fantastic. His personality, humor and knowledge made for a great experience. The food was incredible…dumplings, several types of tuna, drinks and dessert . We certainly did not go away hungry. Highly recommend this tour.

Yura was a great guide. The tour was fantastic and I would highly recommend it. The food was delicious and the tour was informative.

Thanks!

Had a great time! Tour guide was great and catered the itinerary to my interest. Got to see and try some Shibuya local dishes and places

Wonderful (and FILLING) evening

BethanySutton, Jun 2026
This was a great experience! Kei and Karen did a great job sharing their knowledge of the local food, restaurants, history and culture. They made an effort to connect with my son as well as myself and were very nice company to have for the evening. It was five stars all around.

Welcome to Japan!

A tremendous intro to Japanese food and drink! Great guide, he was knowledgeable, friendly, great English, knew the area, willing to share ideas, excellent. Tried many dishes, all great and the various drinks were great also!

Friendly host and great experience

Great variety of food and friendly host. Not "fancy" foods but "regular" food, still much better quality of tuna than we get in Toronto.

Great food and bring your appetite, our tour guide was great and answered many questions about the food and local culture.

Wonderful food experience!

Our guide was amazing - so fun and friendly and all the food stops were excellent. Loved the variety of food served and the walks along the way.

Great time!

It was not what I expected at first but it turned out well. There was an incredible amount of food and it was all so good! Plus, the family that was on the tour with us was awesome. Had a great time!

Must love tuna for this tour

Anonymous, Jun 2026
We were a group of 10. We visited 2 restaurants and a food hall. The first restaurant had a variety of dishes, including dumplings, fried bamboo strips, and a chicken wing stuffed with pork. The second place was mostly raw fish dishes. For someone who loves sashimi, this would have been perfect, but not for us. I would have preferred more variety. The guide had lived in Tokyo for a little over a year and basically was just taking us to the restaurants. I prefer a food tour with history and culture of the food scene. If you do not love tuna this tour is not for you. This would have been more fun just eating a variety from the food hall.

Fun food tour

Aide_S, Jun 2026
Our guide Theo was wonderful! Full of fun information about the food and the area. We experienced food we probably would not have had of on our own.

Sooo worth it!

Bri_W, Jun 2026
Theo was super kind, & knowledgeable. All of the food was delicious. I’d definitely book this tour if you’re visiting Tokyo!

Very basic

Dennis_L, Jun 2026
The guide was friendly enough, but this tour is only for very new to Japanese food. For example, the guide was explaining what soy sauce and sushi was. Also, the restaurants were more like empty tourist focused places. Food was not that good. Likewise, the tour did not explore much of the area. I would only recommend this tour to those that are brand new to Japanese food. If you have had Japanese food before and looking for something new or more quality, then avoid this tour.

Great tour!

We enjoyed our tour with Nicolas who had an interesting perspective as a native Frenchman with robust experience in Japan.

Delicious introduction to Tokyo!

Delicious introduction to Shibuya. We tried all the foods and had a fantastic experience. I highly recommend to anyone visiting Tokyo for the first time.

Hirva_R, Jun 2026
The food on this tour is not very unique. I would have not picked these items for people that are used to eating at Japanese restaurants in the United States. If you are new to Japanese food, this is a good tour.

Delightful experience

Nancy_S, Jun 2026
This was one of the best trips I've taken through viator. The food choices were excellent as was the walk through Shibuya. Our guide was very knowledgeable and very fun and entertaining as well. If we had had more time I would have taken the one through Shinjuku as well.

If you like raw fish, this is the tour for you!

Judith_K, May 2026
We were supposed to be a group of 10, but 6 did not show up, so we were just 2 couples, the guide Nicholas, and a guide trainee. We visited 2 restaurants. The first had a variety of dishes, including dumplings, fried bamboo strips, and a chicken wing stuffed with pork. The second place was mostly raw fish dishes. For someone who loves sashimi, this would have been perfect, but not for us. I would have preferred more variety. Nicholas was a knowledgeable guide, and being a transplant from France gave him a different perspective on Japan.

My partners and I loved this. Miko was very nice and made this a great experience! I would definitely recommend this experience especially with Miko as a guide.

Disappointed - Didn’t have a good tour guide

Fabiana_K, May 2026
This tour was a major disappointment. Nicolas was friendly enough, but unfortunately he did not seem qualified to lead a cultural food tour. He repeatedly mentioned that he studied Japanese history and pop culture and framed that as one of his strengths, yet throughout the tour he shared almost no actual historical or cultural information. The biggest issue was that the tour lacked substance. I was hoping for insight into Japanese food culture, dining customs, local etiquette, or the history behind the dishes and neighborhoods. Instead, most of the experience consisted of awkward silence, stories about the guide’s personal life, and repeated invitations for us to “ask whatever we wanted to know” rather than proactively sharing knowledge. The guide also seemed very flustered throughout the day. Rain, wind, loud music at one restaurant, and even interactions with restaurant staff visibly threw him off and affected the flow of the tour. On top of that, his very thick French accent made him difficult to understand at times. As for the food itself, the first two restaurants were decent, but they were not hidden gems or places I couldn’t have easily found myself with Google Maps and Google Translate. Some of the selections were not great and felt repetitive, such as having two different gyoza dishes at one location. The last location was just a pastry stall at a department store market. It wasn’t even an authentic market, and we had no place to sit, we just had to wait and after we were handed the dessert and ate a few bites, the tour ended. Early. No shibuya crossing, no Hachiko Statue. I’ve done both paid and free food/walking tours in other cities that were dramatically better organized, more informative, and more engaging than this one. I booked this hoping it would help kick off my Tokyo trip with some foundational understanding of Japanese culture and cuisine, but instead it felt like a missed opportunity. Honestly, I’m considering requesting a partial refund.

Such a great and fun food tour!

I had Kei as a tour guide for this food tour and it was excellent! Not only did Kei do an exceptional job with the tour, he was able to send customized recommendations after it ended. My favorite stop was the tuna restaurant- wow!!!!

Simone_S, May 2026
This tour was a waste of time and money. Stopped by 2 restaurants and then was handed a dessert at the final supermarket. Other than the brief introduction of what food was coming, no other explanation was provided. He ended up telling us more about his personal life and job as a translator than anything about Japan. The food at the first restaurant was repetitive. We had 2 types of dumplings, one fried and one boiled. The seating was also weird. 6 of us at one table and another 2 at another table. When food came, one plate was taken to the couple and one was brought to be shared by 6 of us. At the second restaurant, tour guide got super flustered that the food was coming out in quick succession. Food here was also repetitive, with several different variants of tuna sushi. To drag out the time, he then took us on a walk around the block, with very little explanation. At the final supermarket, he had us wander around the market by ourselves and then come meet up. Most of us came back in the designated amount of time, but he just kept telling us to wait for everyone. When I asked if there was something else after this, he said no. What in the world were we waiting for then? I signed up for several other free walking tours while in Tokyo and they were all better than this one. By far the worst tour guide. Seemed to have very little knowledge about Japan, had trouble with pacing the tour, and was really boring. Food was also subpar.

The restaurants chosen were average Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and personable. He shared information about the food as well as the local culture. He did a good job ensuring that everyone's special food requests were met

Great Experience

Victor_Y, May 2026
It was good experience with knowledgeable, attentive and fun host Kei! We tried different food in three places…all tasty and had a great time.

Disappointed

Hardev_S, May 2026
I was very disappointed with this Tokyo food tour. The guide was friendly and clearly tried his best, but his heavy French accent made it difficult to understand much of the explanation in English. There was also very little actual information shared about the food, culture, or neighborhoods. The tour advertised visits to three eateries, but the third stop was literally just a single small pastry. Food portions throughout the tour were very limited and shared among seven people. For the price charged, the value was extremely poor. It felt like most of the money was not going toward the food experience itself. Overall, it was basically a short walk around the block with small shared samples of average food. Nothing felt unique, authentic, or memorable enough to justify the high cost. I would not recommend this tour.

Tour guide gave very little information besides what we were eating, and otherwise expressed dissatisfaction with their time living in Japan. The food was fine.

Family trip, 1st time in Japan

Dawn_D, Apr 2026
I’m giving this tour 5 stars, but with a caveat! First the 5 stars- Jasmine our tour guide was EXCELLENT!! We had a great time with her, learned a lot about the area, food and Japanese culture. The food was excellent, what we got was truly delicious and we enjoyed it very much, really good gyoza, sushi and chicken wing like we’ve never had, all very good. Now the caveat- there wasn’t very much food! As an American who probably eats too much, the entire tour didn’t supply too much food! We hit 2 restaurants and a dessert spot in the food hall of the mall and the portions were very small. It was slightly more than what I would serve as appetizers at home! After the fact I would say do the tour but don’t come starving hungry or plan on maybe getting a bit more to eat on your own after the tour! But again, excellent guide and food, just not enough of it.
