Exceptional Cooking Class Experience in Seoul

Wayne_M, Apr 2026
We’ve started a tradition of taking a cooking class when we travel—and today’s in Seoul was one of the best yet. We had the pleasure of joining a class with Ongo Food Communication, led by owner and founder Jai Choi. The class was small and intimate—just seven of us (five from the U.S. and a newlywed couple from Australia). We each prepared two dishes: Japchae (sweet potato noodles with vegetables) and Jeyuk-bokkeum (spicy pork). And I don’t mind saying—this was some of the best food I’ve had since arriving in Korea. Highly recommend this experience—great food, great instruction, and a fun way to connect with the culture and fellow travelers.

Hanok cooking class

Katarina_S, Sep 2024
The cooking class is located near the historic Bukchon Hanok village in a nice studio. A large group that was supposed to come cancelled, so it was just the two of us - we were very lucky. The cooking class was very well guided, altogether it lasted approximately two hours. We made two classic Korean dishes, and got a lot of answers to our questions about Korean cuisine and culture. The hostess spoke excellent English and was very friendly throughout the class.

One of the best experiences from Seoul

It has been a great experience to learn how to make some of the traditional Korean food. I really enjoyed the walk through the market before the class and we had a lot of fun during cooking.

This tour was a great experience and chance to learn more about the Korean culture. We learned 2 step by step recipes (Japchae, chicken stew) and each ingredient's historical purpose in Korean cooking was explained to us. They hosts were extremely polite and helpful. I would 100% take another class!

This cooking lesson was a wonderful experience and I recommend it if you want to learn how to cook authentic Korean food. Ive tried to make bulgogi back in England but could never get the taste quite right. This lesson made me learn how to get the correct flavours and we even got to eat what we made at the end. It was also fascinating seeing the underground market, which you can see if you arrive 30 minutes earlier. I recommend you do this, as you learn a lot about Korean food culture. The cooking teacher who I think is called Rana was amazing. Her English was good and she kept an eye on us to make sure we were keeping up and if we needed any help. She was very professional at cooking and was very friendly. Thank you for this wonderful experience and insight into Korean food culture and I hope I can now develop my Korean cooking skills in the future.

We cannot say enough how wonderful this experience was. The food we cooked was excellent and the chef was funny and friendly. This was one of our best cooking classes that we have taken. Excellent experience. Granted, it is on the third floor of a building with no elevator, so stay hydrated on your way up and have fun. It is an excellent experience.

What a fantastic introduction to Korean cuisine! First, I would highly recommend that you arrive early about 30 minutes before the listed time to get a tour of the local underground market. It's definitely a different way of shopping than in the US, so it helps to have a local's perspective on how they purchase the ingredients. Next, and probably the reason you are signing up for this, the cooking portion is excellent. We were lucky to only have 4 people, so we got a lot of personal intention from the instructors. They strike a good balance of doing the not-fun prep ahead of time while still letting you chop, dice, grind, and mix. Our instructor, Ran, was a lot of fun and took her time explaining each step. Her and her colleagues would then float around and help you as you did the steps yourself. We made a soup good and bibimbap excellent!. Come hungry. You'll definitely leave full! Would have loved to take another class from these folks if we were in Seoul longer.

This was a great cooking class. Everyone was very friendly and knowledgeable. They showed you how to make a dish and then sent you to your very nice, clean personal workstation to make your own. Slicing, dicing, mixing, cooking, was all done by the participant. At the end we ate what we prepared, so you were able to adjust spices if you wanted. It was delicious! Definately a must do when in Seoul.

THIS. WAS. AWESOME. I cannot emphasize enough how great this was. Our instructor was patient and kept an eye on our progress to catch any mistakes before it got too bad. Their english was excellent and all the staff members were excellent. One even came out to come find us when we got lost trying to find the building. I truly recommend this cooking class. I am a solo traveler who enjoys lots and lots of food lol. So not only was I able to learn how to make kimchi, I was also able to meet some good people. The class I took was a beginner class for kimchi and bulgogi. The bulgogi recipe they have is very easy and very good. I'm not a kimchi expert, but I've had a lot of kimchi from different places, but never attempted to make it at home. They made it so simple to make kimchi so now I can confidently make it home. The market tour was a little lacking though I thought. But that could just be because I visited bigger traditional markets prior to the class. All in all we had a great instructor/chef that day so I had a very enjoyable time.

Cooking class was super. Great instruction and lots of assistance to make the cooking experience smooth and worry free. I am an acid cook, so I really appreciated the cleanliness and detail to avoid cross contamination. Only down side was the location. Hard to find, and even the taxi driver had to GPS it.
