An ancient capital city, Gyeongju is one of South Korea’s most popular destinations thanks to its extensive catalog of historical attractions that showcase the country’s past. But people come to Gyeongju for more than just its ancient Silla tombs. There are many more things to do in Gyeongju, especially for travelers who like picturesque parks and gardens. Besides everything to see in the city, Gyeongju also serves as a leaping-off point for visiting the UNESCO sites Bulguksa and Seokguram Grotto.
With its many parks and gardens, Gyeongju is a destination best visited in the spring or autumn, when the city bursts with color. Visit Gyeongju from April to early June, and you’ll see the fields and trees around Gyeongju that are full of life. The cherry blossom season in early April can get quite busy, especially with its annual cherry blossom festival. Alternatively, see bold autumn foliage in late October or early November.
While a few attractions are close to the city center of Gyeongju, most are found in the sprawling historic districts in the city’s southeast. Walking or cycling are convenient ways to explore, especially in the large parks with no vehicle access. Public buses are useful for reaching areas that are farther from the city center, such as the Hwangnyongsa Temple Site and Gyeongju National Museum, as well as Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto out in Gyeongju National Park.
Dining options for tourists are limited in Gyeongju city center, so visitors should head to the area around Hwangnidan-gil when looking for food. Restaurants line this street in buildings designed to look like traditional hanok, while many more options can be found in the backstreets towards the Daereungwon Tomb Complex. The area has a high volume of noodle and Japanese restaurants, alongside more general Korean and international fare.
