What Sets Our Class Apart At Baekusaeng Makgeolli, we are more than a brewery offering a one-day experience. We are leaders in creating makgeolli resources for brewers worldwide—through our offline classes, published book, and online courses. It has been our pleasure to teach students from all over the world, and in every class we: • Share practical brewing knowledge rooted in traditional methods, using fresh, real ingredients—not simplified shortcuts. • Train students to continue brewing at home, giving them the confidence and understanding to ferment independently after returning to their countries. • Encourage experimentation and creativity, helping each student develop their own style and expression of makgeolli. Our goal is simple but ambitious: to grow a global community of makgeolli brewers who understand the craft, respect its traditions, and continue brewing long after the class ends. Join us—and become part of the worldwide makgeolli brewing journey.

Korean alcohol is a lot more than just a green bottle of soju, which is diluted ethanol with artificial sweetener. Broadly, Korean alcohols are divided into Tak-ju (unfiltered rice wine), Cheong-ju (filtered clear rice wine) and So-ju (distilled spirit). Here, we will focus on our specialty, soju, but we can also taste other types too. Samhae soju was a beloved choice of spirit among the noble class of Joseon dynasty(1392~1894). This luxurious alcohol had caused cult following, but the making was so resource(rice)-heavy that production had to stop during famines. The current master, Hyeonjong Kim had learned and practiced for more than 10 years under master Taeksang Kim who had inherited and kept the recipe in the family. Sadly, master Taeksang Kim passed away in 2021. We will have a privilege to taste the history. *For private groups, please make a private group reservation or message me. Soju Tasting at Distillery - story of 3 pigs
1 hour 30 minutes
from
$43
Come along for a unique Korean rice wine tasting, hosted by Jay, a Korean liquor sommelier, and Sam, a certified Korean alcohol brewer. Korean alcohol is so much more than just that familiar green bottle of Soju. Makgeolli, a fermented and unfiltered (thus hazy) rice wine, is widely consumed, yet poorly understood, despite its popularity. We've explored hundreds of Makgeollis across Korea, finding fantastic, flavorful bottles—many from small, local producers rarely able to reach a wider audience. Our aim is to introduce you to the best Makgeolli in each category. Our tasting takes place in a hidden backroom of a small, specialty rice wine shop. *I also offer a SOJU TASTING at a small distillery with 400 years of family history: Click my profile!

* To enhance your experience, please inform us of your food and wine preferences, as well as any allergies, before the tour date. The menu typically features Korean-style meat dishes. Korean cuisine offers a diverse array of flavors and textures, making it surprisingly versatile when paired with wine. While traditionally associated with rice-based spirits like soju and makgeolli, the complexity of Korean dishes can complement various wine styles. Light-bodied whites like Riesling or Pinot Grigio pair well with spicy and tangy dishes like kimchi or Korean BBQ, while medium-bodied reds such as Pinot Noir or Gamay can complement heartier dishes like bulgogi or galbi. Ultimately, experimentation is key, but the contrast and balance between Korean flavors and wine profiles can create delightful culinary experiences.
