Not worth the money... go shop on your own

Sadly, we were disappointed with this experience. We had hoped to enjoy a fun day of shopping with a guide who could help us navigate the market, find what we were looking for, and perhaps assist with negotiating prices. Unfortunately, we left feeling that we would have been better off simply going on our own. Our guide, Marcos, was very nice and friendly, but the entire experience felt extremely rushed. He walked very quickly, and at times we felt like we were practically running after him just to keep up. There were even moments when we couldn't find him. He also didn't seem particularly familiar with where things were located in the market, so we often ended up wandering around and asking for items ourselves. We had also expected that having a local guide might help us negotiate better prices, especially when making multiple purchases from the same vendor. However, Marcos told us that he felt embarrassed asking vendors for discounts. Any deals we received were ones we negotiated ourselves. He was helpful in carrying our purchases, which we appreciated. We ultimately ended the tour early because we weren't enjoying the experience. Ironically, we actually would have liked to spend more time leisurely wandering through the shops, but the pace of the tour made the shopping experience feel rushed rather than enjoyable. The market itself felt safe, and in hindsight, we would have preferred to visit on our own. Google Translate can easily help with any language barriers, and we were able to negotiate purchases ourselves. Based on our experience, we simply didn't feel that the tour provided enough additional value to justify the cost. Another surprise came when we returned to the car and were told that we needed to pay the parking attendant for the time we had been at the market. This wasn't a major expense, but it would have been nice to have that explained upfront rather than finding out at the end. I do want to emphasize that Marcos was a nice person. We tipped him, and he dropped us off at another landmark we wanted to visit afterward, which we appreciated. We just didn't feel like he wanted to be there or to help in the way I understood would happen in this tour. I actually wasn't planning to leave a review because I don't like the idea of negatively affecting someone's ability to earn a living. However, after receiving multiple requests from Viator asking me to review the experience, I felt I should be honest. We've had many great experiences with Viator, so this was especially disappointing and the first time we've ever felt that we didn't receive our money's worth from a tour.
