Itinerary
This partial transit cruise through the Miraflores Locks takes you into one of three lock systems used along the Panama Canal—an experience not to be missed! The canal’s construction is considered one of the largest and most challenging engineering projects ever undertaken before it was opened in 1914, enabling efficient passage between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
After hotel pickup in the morning, travel toward La Playita pier on a drive through Panama City. Journey along the Amador Causeway (Calzada de Amador), a man-made network of four small islands near the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal. Enjoy breathtaking views of the canal and Panama City skyline before boarding your vessel.
Cruise along the Panama Canal until reaching the Miraflores Locks. Depending on the number of boats present on your date of travel, you most likely have to wait a short while before it’s your ship’s turn inside the locks, but the scene before you is worth it. Enjoy great photo ops as you watch vessels traveling through Miraflores.
Be amazed as your ship is raised up to 56 feet in a two-step process while water from the lake fills the lock’s chambers. Once the process is finished, continue cruising to the Pedro Miguel Locks before arriving at the Gamboa pier.
Here, disembark to re-board the coach for the return transfer to your Panama City hotel.
Please note: A minimum of two people per booking is required.

This is a smooth running machine and worth every penny. Exceptional tour guide the entire time. Food was good for cruise food. The canal and history is just off the hook. This is a really great company. Excellent boat, very efficient hotel pickup in a very nice van. A very good experience if you want to see the canal. Staff is the best!

High value excursion. Friendly crew. Knowledgeable bilingual (English/Spanish) guide. Clean and comfortable boat. Good food and plentiful refreshments.
Actually being in the locks - with a big tanker - watching as we rose up - was an experience of a lifetime. A bucket list item.

The tour was very interesting and the guide was extremely knowledgeable. People asked questions and he was very good and patient about answering everyone's questions. I would definitely recommend this tour.

Excellent trip.
Collected on time at our hotel and taken to meeting place. Rather chaotic when trying to speak to the organiser as it was shambolic with others pushing and shoving to get her attention.
Once on board it was a marvellous trip and the guide provided an excellent narrative.

We do not recommend this tour. I chose this specific one because it was the only option that included hotel pickup. When I entered our hotel details during booking, it was accepted.
However, after we were charged on March 19th, emailed and called us a day before the tour March 21st (tour date March 22nd) to say our hotel was too far. They gave us two options: pay an additional $50 or go to the meeting point ourselves. We agreed to pay the $50, but then they changed the pickup time from 5:00 AM to 4:00 AM. Shortly after, they called again and moved it to 3:00 AM, claiming there was a special event and road closures.
We requested a cancellation and a full refund, but they refused because it was within 24 hours of the tour. Even after that, they kept sending emails changing the pickup time back to 4:00 AM. I replied to reiterate our request for a cancellation and we did not go.
This was a terrible experience. We strongly advise against taking this tour. Unless you specifically want to experience passing through the locks on a ship, it is better to go there on your own to watch the ships pass.

Pick up from hotel was on time. Our driver took us to the actual boat instead of where we were to go for check in. We had to wait 45 minutes standing at the dock waiting for everyone else to arrive. The lunch provided was average. There was plenty of soda and water provided. Beer & chips could be purchased. GUS did a good job narrating in both Spanish & English. Glad we did the partial transit tour- which was interesting/ but it does make for a long day. My 15 year old was bored at points through out.

The Viator Half Transit Tour lasts from 10:00 AM (dock embarkation) to 17:00 hrs (dock disembarkation) exactly as advertised. It takes you through the passage by boat through 3 locks which is plenty for you to see the lock mechanism . It is an extremely/ extraordinary tour I highly recommend. The day went by so fast! There was plenty on board to drink (water and soft drinks) they also serve a typical Panamaen lunch. If you are looking for a greater activity take this one , you won’t be disappointed.

Overall Impression
This Panama Canal partial transit tour offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness one of the world’s great engineering achievements — especially the lock system — and includes insightful historical narration from knowledgeable guides. However, organizational and logistical challenges markedly detract from an otherwise unique experience.
📍 1. Check-In and Initial Logistics — Chaotic Start
The check-in process was disorganized and frustrating. Instructions about where and how to board were unclear, resulting in confusion among participants. What should have been a smooth start instead felt rushed and poorly coordinated. Remarkably, the wait and lack of clarity at the boarding point set the tone for an inefficient beginning to the day.
🍽 2. Breakfast — Underwhelming and Sparse
Breakfast was offered but was limited in both quality and quantity. There was little variety, and the selections were underwhelming, leaving much to be desired for early-morning travelers who started their day before daybreak.
🚢 3. Tour Length and Canal Locks — Lengthy But Worth It
The tour duration is long, spanning several hours from pickup to drop-off, which can be tiring for guests wanting a more efficient excursion. That said, the core experience — cruising through the Miraflores Locks and observing the lock operation from point-blank range — was genuinely fascinating. Seeing the vessel rise and fall with the canal’s water levels provided a rare and engaging perspective on this monumental structure.
🍔 4. Lunch — Disappointing With Limited Options
Lunch onboard matched the breakfast in its limited appeal. Options were few, and the overall meal quality was mediocre. While edible, it failed to impress and did not reflect well on what was otherwise promoted as a full-service tour.
🛟 5. Disembarkation Challenges — Awkward Exit
Once the water portion of the tour concluded, exiting the ship proved unexpectedly cumbersome due to issues with the brow (gangway). This added unnecessary stress and delay at a point in the itinerary when guests expected a smoother transition back onto land.
🚌 6. Return Transport — Unclear Logistics
Although large buses were provided to transport everyone back to a meeting point, the reason why our original van could not return for us was unclear. It felt like an unnecessary step that complicated an otherwise straightforward return transfer — especially given the earlier chaos during pickup.
🗣 7. Tour Guide and Historical Commentary — Highlight of the Trip
By far, the most positive aspect of the tour was the guide’s narrative. The explanations of the canal’s history, construction, and importance were engaging, informative, and well delivered, keeping interest high even during slower segments of the cruise. This historical context elevated the experience beyond a simple sightseeing trip.
This Panama Canal partial transit cruise delivers undeniable value in terms of experience and historical insight, but the organizational inefficiencies, disappointing meals, and problematic transitions significantly undercut the overall satisfaction. It’s a worthwhile investment primarily for canal enthusiasts and first-time visitors — just go in with moderated expectations about logistics and food quality.

Such a cool experience but really early in the morning and too long. The food was not great for vegetarians.
Lucy_P, Jan 2026
Trip is well organized by the company. Staff was very kind. Boat had plenty of restrooms and lots of water/soda available.
If you are not a morning person, go on the southbound trip. Pick up was at 5:15am and we were done by 12:30.
The only negative was the food. Very small plates and looong lines to get a plate.
Experience was good!
Larry_S, Jan 2026
Great view and experience in a canal lock. Worth getting up at 4:45, nice pick up and return service Gus gave constant bilingual commentary explaining canal history and operations
Emily_Y, Dec 2025
Once in a lifetime opportunity to travel through the lock system. Tour guide was exceptionally knowledgeable and the entire staff was very professional.

Great tour but did start our rough. Pick up time was 5 AM so we were not able to eat any breakfast before leaving. When we got to the dock the boat did not have our name on the list so we were pushed off to the side and then after everyone boarded our driver talked to the guy and after about 10 minutes and phone call we were allowed on the boat. Good think it wasn't very crowded so we were able to get good seats. The boat did serve something called breakfast but it some just cold cheese, ham, bananas, and grapes. They also served lunch but it was cold and again not very good. So bring your own snacks. The canal tour was amazing. We shared the locks with some tug boats so we have great views. Our tour guide Uncle Marty was very knowledgeable and gave us lots of good information.
Hege, Nov 2025
It is really an interesting tour. Being in the locks and experience it yourself is amazing 🙂
The guiding was very good, but I would advise you to stay outside, as it was hard to hear what the guide said inside.
Andreea_T, Oct 2025
Very nice tour, but too long. Also, the logistics need to be improved. It took 2.5 hours from the hotel to the ship because of poor organization. The lunch on the ship was good and the crew was nice. The guide gave lots of good information about the history of the Panama Canal. Overall a good tour.
Pattie_H, Sep 2025
Informative, emersion into the experience of going through the locks. In addition, food was very good.
Rowland_R, Jun 2025
This is THE trip to take whilst in Panama. A partial transit takes in iconic locks and passage under the Americas bridge. The tour commentary was excellent. One minor observation..vegetarians were not really catered for with the "light lunch". That could easily be remedied. The complimentary coffee was excellent.
All in all a worthwhile memorable trip.
Peter_B, Apr 2025
Great trip, very well organized. Lunch was excellent and the guide knowledgeable, we did not realize that we would not be returning on the boat, but on a bus but everything was very well coordinated and worked out well 😁!
RUBY_J, Mar 2025
While the weather was rather hot, it was worth the heat. There was a little rain but nothing that hindered enjoyment of the trip.
If you get a chance, definitely take the tour!
Tara_N, Mar 2025
This tour was absolutely worth the money. Our tour guide, Gus, had so much interesting information for us as we navigated the locks. He also answered all of the questions asked of him during his explanations which was a bonus! The lunch was good as well. We made it through our portion of the canal in great time.
The only issue we had (which was not really an issue but could have been) was the driver who transported us from our hotel to the tour was an hour early. We were walking back from breakfast and if it had taken longer we would’ve missed the ride. They only wait for 5 minutes then go on to the next stop.
Karen_B, Feb 2025
Early pick up was on time (good communication). Needed a little more instruction to board and off-board. The guide who gave the voice over on the cruise (Monty?) was great!!! Got a lot of information as we traveled. Good transportation, nice little lunch, free water/Cokes/Sprite, fairly nice bathroom on board.
Overall a pleasant experience.
anna_h, Feb 2025
We had a great and Informative boat tour through the canal. The only thing is we would have like a little more historical context about the canal while on the bus ride to the boat. The food was tasty and the staff was really friendly.
marion81611, Feb 2025
Seeing how the locks work is fascinating. Despite some people complaining in past reviews of trouble taking photos due to number of people. I did not find that a problem and the lunch was definitely sufficient. What I did find a problem was all the waiting. Not just at the locks but on the bus. Picked up at 9:30 (last property pickup). Got to boat by 11;15, then sat on boat before it took off without any explanation for another 45 minutes. I met one lady who had been on the boat since 9:30 that am.
Joshua_F, Feb 2025
The boat tour itself was great. The problems started after we docked. The tour specifically says it includes entry to the Miraflores visitor center. The tour company admitted that the booking said it included the visitor center but they said it was a mistake. They refused to take us and refused to refund the cost on the entry ticket. Viator was equally as useless as they too admitted that it said it was included but they too refused to refund the cost. I have had good experiences with many other Viator tour excursions but they fumbled the ball on this one.
Ben_S, Jan 2025
Starts very early but worth it. Great tour and a very unique perspective of the workings of the canal. Great guide and very informative and answered all questions we had.
Debbie_M, Jan 2025
Slow/long wait to go thru the locks.
Too many people on board. Hard to take pictures.
Closest to site, last to be dropped off.
bob_w, Jan 2025
We had a good time
Super Mario was a great guide with lots of information and tips. We saw monkeys and slaoths and birds. The snack was tasted!
Ronald_P, Dec 2024
Great tour knowledgeable guide. Awesome lunch. All around great value. Don't leave Panama without this cruise. Food and beverage was beyond expectations. Would highly recommend it
Willis_W, Dec 2024
Tour starts with pickup at hotel and bus has a guide. You are taken to a tour boat which provides another guide. Overall a very enjoyable experience
Jack_B, Dec 2024
It's a great tour that takes you through the first three locks of the Panama Canal. The tour guide on the boat takes you through the history of the canal and the technology used in the locks to raise and lower vessels as they cross from one ocean to the other.
YOMARIS_R, Dec 2024
It's an excellent experience. Katiushka is the best tour guide: patient, humble and had a good attention to us. 💯 Recommended.
