Great overview of Casco Viejo. Alex is friendly, funny, and makes the history engaging. Having grown up in the area, he clearly knows it well and adds local context and a personal touch you wouldn’t get exploring on your own.
The tour covers a lot in 2–3 hours and can feel a bit fast-paced at times, but that also means you see and learn a lot. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes, bring water, and be prepared for the heat. It may not be the best fit for elderly visitors or those with mobility issues. Also, bring small cash for church admission fees along the way—I would have preferred a slightly higher ticket price with those included since I generally don’t carry cash.
We had already spent a few days in Panama, so some of the history and stops were familiar. This tour would be especially valuable earlier in your trip as a great introduction to the city.

Alex really loves history and is so enthusiastic! Be prepared to walk and tolerate the heat. Traffic is horrendous and you have to be able to negotiate going from streets to curbs along with parked and moving cars. The area is filled with so much history!
We felt our group was a little too large. There were about 17 in our group and we had many different speaking nationalities in our group and it was sometimes difficult to hear and understand the information he was trying to relate.

This walking tour with Alex was a fantastic start to our time in Panama City. We got a great understanding of the history of the city, as well as the human side of the city from our guide's rich experience. As promised, we were introduced to some hidden gems, but we also got to see all the prominent sites (and learn the context to appreciate them). It was a really great tour!

The guide Alex had a lot of knowledge especially when it came to date of events. Wear comfortable shoes & sunscreen & hat. He was very accommodating with pick up & getting us to the hotel at the end of tour, when we decided to stay a little longer to eat around the area. We definitely recommend Alex as you tour guide.

Having once worked as a certified tour guide in my city, I honestly expected a different level of coherence and narrative depth from this tour, based on its stated focus on “legends” and “hidden gems.” Every city has hidden stories and captivating legends but I didn’t hear much of that. This is an experience for tourists who are content with some rudimentary historical facts, but I just wouldn’t recommend it to travelers who take these kinds of tours often and expect a certain level of mastery in historical storytelling - the kind that moves you and has you thinking and reflecting on history long after the tour is done. Having taken many tours with expert historians and seasoned storytellers worldwide, the price point just didn’t match the value or the level of expertise I expected.

We did the 10am tour with Alex as our tour guide. He was very informative and had a wealth of knowledge about Casco Viejo which is a must if you visit Panama City.
While you could wander the streets on your own, Alex brought the neighborhood to life with stories, history, and little details you’d easily miss otherwise. He also shared his passion for the area that he spent most of his life growing up in.
Casco Viejo was built in 1673 after pirates leveled the original city just two years earlier. We saw sections of the protective walls that were erected to guard against future attacks. The district is a mix of old and new—colonial-era churches, colorful plazas, boutique cafés, and some of the trendiest restaurants in the city.
We explored landmarks like Arco Chato, Independence Square, and the bustling artisan market, with vendors selling handmade crafts, vibrant textiles, and souvenirs. Alex pointed out a few tucked-away shops and places to eat.

I had a great experience on the “Legends of Casco Viejo” tour in Panama and can’t recommend it enough. Our guide, Alex, was incredibly knowledgeable and brought the history of the area to life with engaging stories and a genuine local perspective you just wouldn’t get on your own. The tour included visits to several beautiful churches and hidden corners of Casco Viejo, uncovering layers of history that made the whole experience feel rich and meaningful.
It’s clear Alex is passionate about sharing the culture and heritage of the area, and that made a huge difference. The pace was comfortable, but definitely come prepared; wear comfortable shoes since there’s a fair bit of walking. I’d also suggest light, breathable clothing, a hat for the sun, and an umbrella just in case the weather turns.
Overall, this is a great tour that blends storytelling, history, and local insight perfectly. Highly recommend it to anyone visiting Panama!

We really enjoyed this walking tour.
