The Monument Valley itself was absolutely beautiful, but unfortunately, the overall experience was quite disappointing.
The tour was supposed to include an overnight stay in a traditional Hogan, but unfortunately, it had been destroyed by flooding. We were offered a different tour instead, and we were told that the difference in price would be refunded.
We then had to arrange our own accommodation. Hotels in the area were very expensive, and the only suitable option we could find cost around $400. Because the hotel check-in started at 11:00 p.m., we had to leave before the performances had finished in order to make it back in time.
We understand that the flooding was completely beyond the organizers’ control. However, we did not feel that they really understood our situation or made much effort to compensate us for the inconvenience and additional costs we had to deal with. We were also disappointed that, because of the situation, we were unable to stay until the end of the performances.
On the positive side, our guide was wonderful. She was very engaged, knowledgeable and passionate. She shared many interesting stories and also beautifully sang in the Navajo language, which made the experience very special and authentic.
Unfortunately, despite having a wonderful guide and seeing such an incredible place, the way the situation was handled by the organizers left us disappointed. Monument Valley is truly spectacular and worth seeing, but the overall experience did not meet our expectations.
Conclusion le piège à touristes par excellence! Ne pas y passer la nuit point.
