"All Inclusive" Click-Bait

The experience itself - flying in a hot air balloon - was good. However most everything in between made this experience quite annoying and disappointing. I read the full listing when I booked but should have re-read the NIGHT before. The driver picked us up promptly at 4:30 am, and we drove about an hour to get to the drop off location. When we arrived at the spot to get put in the hot air balloon, they began taking some pictures of us. I thought, "ooh fun! I didn't realize this was also included" and kept telling my husband how this was an "all inclusive" experience. Once we were done with some photos, we were CRAMMED into the hot air balloon. We could barely move and turn around freely, each side of the basket had 5 people each, so we were just hitting and rubbing strangers. We were also particularly unlucky because we were in the only solid colored balloon in the sky, and our pictures clearly showed that. The balloon ride lasted about 30 minutes, maybe a little more, I didn't keep track but felt pretty short. Once we landed we had a glass of champagne, then everyone drove back to the starting point in a bus. (Everyone buys different packages offered from different companies and they need to go back to their starting point before moving on with any further included parts of the package). We went back to see the photos which is when we were told they were NOT included - great, I cannot say I was very happy about that since they were not up front about it and I had assumed all-inclusive meant exactly that. The plus side is the pictures were good. I wish there were more for the price, or I was better prepared beforehand, but I was surprised by this element. The videos were not good in my opinion - we were crammed in the balloon, I was not fully prepared, and the balloon we were in was the only plain one in the sky. (I know it's so small and trivial - but we were literally the only ones so it was incredibly disappointing, especially in our pictures and videos that they wanted us to pay for). After the sales pitch, we went with our driver back out to the cave breakfast. I will say, the greatest part about the "all inclusive" is having a driver with you at every step. There is a lot of travelling back and forth and Teotihuacan is pretty far (1-2 hours) from the main parts of Mexico City. Make sure to tip your driver. We went to the cave breakfast next, which was much smaller than I anticipated or remembered seeing in some videos and pictures. Maybe there are multiple options, I'm unsure. The breakfast we went to was just 3 options of traditional Mexican style breakfast; enchiladas, chilaquiles, and eggs your way (you only choose one per person), with verde or rojo sauce (green or red sauce). Then a party option for multiple people. This typical Mexican style breakfast for 2 people would MAYBE cost 300-400MXN Pesos max. (Around 20 USD), and even then that is a bit much. I think the breakfast and the cave were honestly nothing special, a bit disappointing, but the highlight of this part was the musical trio. (It's like a mariachi band but it was just 3 people, called a trío romántico). They play some music while everyone gets settled then once everyone has gotten their meal or is almost done eating, they walk around and take requests; they ask you if you want them to sing specifically to you, they have some predetermined options, and they give you a giant sombrero and sing next to your table. Great for pictures, very immersive and fun, but costs 300MXN Pesos - otherwise you can just enjoy as other people book them to sing and wear the hats. After the breakfast you leave with your driver or group or bus to go to Teotihuacan pyramids. We started at a gift shop/mezcal tasting center near the pyramids where they taught us about pulke and mezcal, the obsidian and craft making, etc. Very interesting, and the mezcal/pulke tasting was honestly also good. I wish it wasn't so fast paced and rushed, but the options they provided us to taste were good. Then, they followed us around the gift shop (when we still hadn't even seen the pyramids yet) and tried to convince us to buy things. Of course the artwork is beautiful, and if they can offer to ship it home for you safely, (and I was in the proper tax bracket), I would HIGHLY suggest you purchase an item - or sneak a picture to look it up online (photos are not allowed at all, however). They want to sell these items, so if you are interested be sure to haggle. We wasted a lot of time in the gift shop just appreciating the art because it is truly beautiful, but also because our teacher/guide followed us the entire time and it was quite awkward to leave and not buy anything. I'm sure they earn a decent part of that commission on pieces they sell. We finally walked outside with nothing in hand and ready to go to the pyramids, one other member of our experience had then told us we can pay EXTRA to have him as a tour guide in the pyramids part of this experience. - WHAT. I was shocked that I was being sold another part of what I figured might be a part of the "all inclusive" experience. We decided not to proceed with the tour because we had spent enough money, they were not rude or anything and truly I wish we could have gone forward with his assistance on the tour, but I was honestly pretty upset by this point that this felt like an 8 hour time-share sales pitch, essentially. He left and we went on with our driver to the pyramids, where he kindly reminded us that these tickets were not included in the experience. what. the. f. I honestly couldn't believe it at this point, I looked at the description again and it was there, clear as day at the end, and I remembered reading that part when I originally purchased the tickets maybe a week or two prior. Definitely my fault. I unfortunately did not have enough cash to pay for the tickets for both my husband and I to get in, and by that point we were also quite tired and exhausted (the experience started at 4:30am driving to the hot air balloon area and was around 11:30 pm when we were about to enter the pyramid zone). My driver was nice enough to offer to pay for us and we pay him back but I declined his offer and then we just headed the 2 hours back to our airbnb. I am very disappointed that this experience was basically sales pitch after sales pitch, and I truly wish it was 100% all inclusive like the title eluded. The people were nice, the true part of the experiences were nice, but I felt very misled by the "all inclusive" nomenclature, and sad that we missed out on a huge part of this experience. I would rather pay more for all of these things to automatically be a part of the purchase, rather than spending literally hours hearing people trying to sell additional things to me. Always, always, always haggle, tip your driver, and leave reviews so these companies can hopefully improve for the betterment of the customers.

Your reservation included the hot air balloon flight, breakfast at La Gruta, transportation, and a visit to the Teotihuacán archaeological zone. All of the services included in your reservation were provided, and in your particular case, transportation was provided privately, allowing you to have your own driver throughout the experience rather than sharing transportation with other guests. Regarding the breakfast, La Gruta offers a traditional Mexican breakfast with several options to choose from. The breakfast is part of the experience for its location inside the natural cave and its atmosphere, rather than being an unlimited or buffet-style meal. The musical trio, photographs, mezcal tastings, crafts, and other additional services are separate optional services offered directly by the establishments or local providers. We also want to clarify that the photographs and videos taken at the balloon site are not included in the reservation. They are offered for purchase directly by the balloon operator, and guests are completely free to decide whether or not they wish to purchase them.
