    Interesting day out

    Sarah_B, Apr 2025
It’s a long drive out. But it was worth it. The work Rosa is doing is wonderful and seeing the axoltls was incredible. We learned so much from Martha. And we got to cuddle baby bunnies and guinea pigs!

    Doesn’t get better than this!

This experience exceeded all of our expectations. To start, Martha and Alonso were so lovely and knowledgeable. The axolotls are about a 2 hour drive away, so they broke up the journey by stopping for breakfast on the way. They took us to a fantastic spot, Casa Xoloc, and we had the BEST breakfast ever. The food just kept coming and each plate was even more delicious than the last. We all agreed it was one of our favorite meals of the entire trip. If you are traveling with kids (or anyone that gets car sick) I recommend bringing some Dramamine and taking it when you get to the cafe, as the last quarter of the journey is a bit bumpy and windy. I also had my EarPods and an audio story all ready for our 9 year old to make the time pass! Now for the main event, the axolotls. Martha gave us an extremely informative introduction all about the axolotls and Jose and Rosa’s efforts to save the unique little creatures. Rosa didn’t speak English, but Martha translated everything and we were able to learn even more about their efforts and experiences with raising axolotls. Because they’d recently been exposed to something on a new plant they’d purchased and were still recovering, we weren’t able to hold or feed them, but that didn’t dampen the experience at all. And they made up for it with a tour of their farm animals - we got to hold and feed their rabbits (and 2 week old baby bunnies!) and guinea pigs, pet their mini donkey and feed their sheep. It was an animal lovers dream! If you have a kid that loves axolotls and animals, this is the experience for you. We all enjoyed it so much and it was worth every penny.

    Great for families

Our guides were great! My son is very into axolotls right now so we chose this tour for our trip to CDMX. He loved seeing the axolotl museum, and Dona Rosa took her time to let the kids feed the axolotls and explained everything to us. The food was delicious and the guides were very conscientious.

Best way to learn about and get close to axolotls

Highly recommend this tour. My daughter loves axolotls, so we've done every axolotl-themed activity we can find, and this was by far the best. The guides were informative and made sure we had a comfortable experience... even when my daughter was carsick on the drive there. In fact, she said that if it weren't for her tummyache, it would have been the best day of her life.

Worth every penny. Very passionate tour guides with a wealth of information!!!

Had such a wonderful time, cannot say enough good things about this tour and the guides. They were very informative and easy to contact. To start, we were supposed to take the tour on Tuesday, unfortunately, we all came down with the travel stomach bug. We reached out hoping to reschedule and were contacted immediately and given options. We were able to reschedule the tour for Friday. They were very helpful and understanding. Top-notch customer service. We were picked up promptly at our hotel, and greeted by Martha and Alonzo. They were very friendly and genuinely excited about what they are doing. They covered everything we would be doing and explained the day. My daughter was very excited about the trip as she has an axolotl as a pet. They were very interested in hearing about her interest and eager to answer all questions she had. They were a wealth of information. When we arrived at the location for the axolotls, we were greeted by the family that ran the operation. They are clearly passionate about their efforts to raise and assist in the conservation efforts of these extremely endangered animals. While the family did not speak English, the guides were able to translate and ask any questions we had. The amount of information they provided was fantastic. We were able to hand feed and hold the axolotls. After visiting with the axolotls, we were provided a homemade lunch prepared by the family. I had some of the best ceviche I have ever tasted. Being Friday during lent, fish, rice, and hard-boiled eggs were on the menu. I wish I had paid more attention to the description and known we would have lunch as we had eaten a big breakfast, so my kids just weren't very hungry. I did my best to finish their portions as it was so good but lost the battle on the last couple. I hope they didn't think they didn't like it, as it was absolutely fantastic. After the tour and lunch, we were offered the option to return back to the hotel or spend a little time in the town. We chose the latter and it was a great choice. We were given some free time to look around the local shops, and eat some really good homemade ice cream that was recommended to us. We were able to explore on our own, and they asked us how much time we would like to see the area before returning. We were never rushed and allowed to really take in and enjoy the area. After relaxing in town for a while, we were on our way back to the hotel. I really can't say enough good things about this tour. If you are interested in axolotls, and enjoy a slow-paced tour where you are not rushed, and can have all your questions answered, with passionate tour guides, and a fantastic family-prepared lunch....book this tour, you will not regret it.
