Salih gave a wonderful tour of these neighborhoods with a lot of history. He gave great context for what we were seeing, and I learned a lot about this history of Istanbul. His English is excellent. Even though I was the only one booked for the tour, there was no cancellation so I had a private tour.

    Great experience and tour

    Tina_C, Jun 2024
It is a tour worth taking, very different from the old town. You get to meet and see the local people. The colorful steps and houses are very unique. The tour guide Omar is very knowledgeable about the history and area. I highly recommend this tour.

    Great experience

    Albert_C, May 2024
This turned out to be an individual tour--just me and the guide. The guide was a very knowledgeable and personable guide. Excellent English, friendly, and outgoing. We wandered about the neighborhoods, up and down very steep and narrow streets. We also stopped at a Cristian church and the Iron Church. We had a snack at a rooftop restaurant. A very pleasant Sunday afternoon.

    Off the beaten path…

    Jeff_K, May 2024
Off the beaten path…very small group…entire experience was focused on a walk through two connected, historic neighborhoods that are a bit out of the way. Very knowledgeable guide…perfect English skills.

    Not to be missed!

    Meghan_O, Apr 2024
This tour was super cool and off the beaten path! It was great hitting the streets! Taking in the beautiful coloured houses and learning about the architectural changes over the years. Cute cats everywhere! Love the little cafe we stopped at. A real Turkish experience! Our guide was amazing and even came to find me when I got lost off the tram! Definitely recommended!!

The colour and history of Fener and Balat with a super guide

    Darren_G, Mar 2024
We wanted something a little off the beaten track, a guide with extensive local knowledge and to generally have a fun few hours. All boxes were checked! Salih was charming, funny and knowledgeable. We both learned so much, and got to experience some delightful scenery. One tip - make sure to ask Salih to pick up some Kir Pidesi... There is some walking involved, particularly up and down a few hills and the colourful steps, but nothing *too* strenuous.

    A nice treat

    juharriss11, Feb 2024
Tour was great. I ended up being the only one booked so it was a private tour! Showed off the beaten path Istanbul and I marked several spots to come back for coffee or to explore more. A little pricey for what you get but was still a good experience.

    Ethnic History

    William_F, Dec 2023
Barack is an extremely well-informed tour guide. His tour was like a one credit college class in the ethnic history of Constantinople and Istanbul. A+

Perfect off the beaten path tour! Don’t miss!

    Betsi_K, Oct 2023
From the moment Burak met us at the meeting location everything was absolute perfection! He created a wonderful day by making the group feel cohesive and relaxed. His knowledge of everything that we were seeing was extensive, and his way of expressing that knowledge was on point! What a wonderful opportunity to see items that were off the beaten path… A side of Istanbul definitely worth visiting!

    Wonderful walk through history

Tour was wonderful. Guide very knowledgeable and personable. It is fast paced. Lots if walking up and down cobblestone streets. Worth visiting these areas away from crowded touristic spots.

Had a fabulous afternoon with Sully where we saw a lot of different areas in a very pleasant way learning a lot more about Istanbul

A Must tour when visiting Istanbul. Wow in every way

    Annora_M, May 2023
From start to end this was the best walking tour I have ever had. Our guide, Önder was fantastic. His knowledge is unbeatable and he succeeded in making us feel as passionate about Fener&Ballat as he is. The neighbourhoods are colourful and charming. We were introduced to the best food in Istanbul - basic and tasty. The walk up to Pierre Lotti hill was a wonderful experience made perfect with all the info Önder shared with us. I tour is an absolute must when visiting Istanbul - without it one will never understand the beginning of it all. Highly recommended

It was a great day exploring parts of Istanbul with our guide Salih. Seen many things and heard all about them. Very informative and knowledgeable, recommend doing this tour with him.

    An Amazing Trip

Our guide was Onder. We had an amazing trip. Onder introduced us to a new, full of feelings and thoughts about Istanbul. I personally was very pleased to learn not just about popular facts but deeper history twists. Plus, Onder gave us priceless advise for the best ways to see Istanbul and we are very happy we followed them.

    Great walking tour

    Lizzy_B, Apr 2023
We booked this tour to get away from the more touristy parts of Istanbul and to get some local insights. Our guide was Önder and we were very lucky in that we were the only people booked onto our group tour. This meant we had his expertise to ourselves and could go entirely at our own pace. We really enjoyed the afternoon and think the tour had the right mix of walking while just taking in your surroundings, information about landmarks and breaks. Thanks again. For people who are wondering about the step count of this tour, we racked up about 11000 steps for the tour alone and there are some hills. Very steady pace and very doable for us but I did occur to us that some of our older relatives would have struggled a bit.

    Amazing experience

    avelli3000, Mar 2023
Salih was an excellent tour guide. He was extremely knowledgeable, educated and passionate about his country. He went above and beyond to provide us with an amazing experience. I would not hesitate to book this tour.. you will not regret! Thanks again!

Perfect tour to check Fener, Balat, Pierre Loti and Golden Horn off your bucket list!

Great tour by Onder. Professional, knowledgeable and willing to help! It was my first day in Istanbul and this was the first tour/sightseeing I did and he really set the bar high. Would definitely recommend this to cover Fener, Balat, Pierre Loti and the Golden Horn - have a great time!

A wonderful afternoon in Old Istanbul.

    Joe_L, Oct 2022
This was a great way to spend an afternoon in Istanbul. I loved exploring the old neighborhoods and learning about past and present life there. I enjoyed learning more about Jewish and Orthodox life in Istanbul and thought the church visit was a highlight. My guide Salih was great. He made sure that I got the most out of the afternoon. I would encourage other travelers to take advantage of this unique tour

    Amazing Experience

    Nadia_R, Oct 2022
It was an amazing experience with Ondor. He was polite, knowledgeable, and very courteous. We get to see the inner city and hidden monuments that are usually missed by tourists. Be prepared to hike a hill and walk a lot. Thank you!

    Memorable afternoon!

    Megan_R, Dec 2021
I did this tour within my first few days of being in Istanbul and I'm so glad I did. I loved that we utilized different forms of public transport in Istanbul (tram, bus, cable car, ferry); this helped me udnerstand how the system works and use it efficiently. When I expressed interest in sseeing the Iron Church (not originally part of the itinerary), the guide was super accomodating and adjusted the original plan. The whole afternoon felt casual, yet professional. I appreciated the historical and contemporary insights into life in Istanbul. It's hard to pick just one highlight of the tour, but it was either sipping tea at Pierre Loti with the view of the Bosphorous or trying Salep on the ferry ride home (which I have now been sipping throughout my entire trip). The tour ended on the Karakoy side of the Bosphorous and I was staying on the other side so the guide helped me get on the Metro and find my way home.

Thank you for this lovely review. A glass of Çay with the Golden Horn view and a warm cup of sahlep drink in a cold day cruising in the Golden Horn is a great treat. We are happy to hear you enjoyed our accompany. Thank you for choosing to travel with My Local Guide Istanbul and we hope to see you travel with us again in the future.

    Colorful Experience

    Sara_G, Oct 2020
Had a great time on this tour. I was the only one, so it turned out to be a private tour. I don’t think I would have explored these neighborhoods so really happy I chose this particular experience. There was a lot of walking so be prepared. Also, it is not leisurely enough for full photography. Got some great shots though.

    Passeio deixa a desejar

    Vera_C, Jan 2025
Os bairros são interessantes mas o passeio deixa a desejar. O guia entregou a sua parte mas parecia desejoso de que acabasse logo. Foi informativo, mas claramente podia ter ficado de fora do programa.

    Response from Host, Jan 2025

Thank you for taking your time to write us a review. The problem was the language barrier. This tour involves lots of information about Ottoman history with the minorities throughout the centuries, local living style and architecture but l figured out that you were not understanding most of the information l was sharing with you because your english was limited. During the three hours tour l don’t remember if you asked one single question. I’m sorry that you didn’t enjoy the tour but it is a great tour when you understand what the guide is saying.
