Sculpted from Cappadocia’s honey-hued sea of volcanic tuff, Urgup’s troglodyte dwellings and cave hotels make an atmospheric base from which to explore the region. The lively town is one of Cappadocia’s main hubs, from where you can walk through the fairy chimney valleys, venture into underground cities, and marvel at ancient rock-cut churches. A sunrise hot air balloon flight is among the quintessential things to do in Urgup, along with visits to the cave village of Cavusin, Uchisar Castle, and the pottery town of Avanos.
Cappadocia’s temperatures—and tourist numbers—soar in July and August, but it’s best to avoid peak season if possible. Instead, come between April and June when the hillsides are dotted with wildflowers, and the warm weather is ideal for hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities. If you don’t mind the crowds, time your visit for one of the annual festivals, such as the International Hot Air Balloon Festival, held in July or August, or Urgup’s International Wine Festival in October.
Urgup is strategically located at the heart of Cappadocia’s main tourist area, and dolmuş (minibusses) link the town with the fairy chimney valleys, villages, and various sites. The town itself is easy to get around on foot, and you can always hop on the back of an ATV or moto-taxi to whizz you up the steep hillsides. Most travelers opt to join a tour to explore further afield, but you can also hire a bike or scooter for shorter distances.
Foodies won’t want to miss Cappadocia’s signature dish, “testi kebab” (meat stew cooked inside a clay pot), but here’s another one to add to your tasting list—“aside,” a traditional dessert made from flour, butter, and grape molasses. Look out for it on restaurant menus around Urgup and Goreme.
