This tour provided an in depth history of Vietnam including its struggle for independence starting from BC to the modern day. the best part about this tour was our tour guide- Truong (aka: Scorpio) who shared his passionate and in depth knowledge of Vietnam’s history that beyond the museum exhibits and artefacts. I had a great four hour tour with my guide Chien who was very friendly and knowledgeable. We began our journey with a taxi ride to the B-52 Museum which is small but very interesting. I am a retired history teacher so Chien an I asked and answered a lot of questions of each other throughout the day. We next walked to the Ho Chi Minh Museum and Chien painted a solid portrait of the man. Finally, we walked to the Hanoi Hilton which was very interesting. Lastly, he walked me back to my hotel. Chien is a wonderful guide and gentleman!

We had Hannah as our guide ,she was very prompt and easy to get on with. My husband is ex military and she learnt a lot from him as well. We also had a taste of what it is like to live like a local. Thoroughly enjoyed our day , she went above and beyond to make this a wonderful day. If you decide to do this you are the person responsible for taxi, her lunch and we tipped well because she is doing this for free. We'll worth it ! You need a guide for the Hoa lu prison to understand it better. Fabulous

This was one of the worst experiences with a tour I have ever had. First of all, the two tour guides who showed up at our hotel had horrible English-barely understandable. I knew we were in for a long day when we started at 10am. They took us to the national history museum and really didn’t tell us anything related to war history. We went through every room and didn’t learn much. Please be aware that the tour guides who do these tours make or break your experience based on how good their English is.

This was an excellent way to view several of the sites. I had Chien as my guide and he was brilliant. His English was great and I was able to easily engage in meaningful dialog, as we discussed the war and its causes and affects.
I really enjoyed his company.
Per the price arrangements, I paid for the entrance tickets, taxis, and we enjoyed a coffee together.
I would definitely recommend.

I booked this trip for myself and my partner on day 1 of our trip to Vietnam and it was a fantastic context builder for not just Vietnamese history but the opportunity to hang out with and talk to a local person was brilliant. Our private guide Hung was so friendly and informative. He showed us around the Imperial Citadel and the Pagoda in Hue. We then had a boat trip on the Perfume river. Well worth the money ans we learnt about the history in Hue and Vietnam. Thank you Hung!

I lived through the Vietnam War, when boys were being drafted into a war many of us thought was immoral. Vietnam has been fighting Imperialist occupation for centuries. Much of the prison tour is devoted to the 20th century occupation by the French. The part about our "involvement" (euphemism for carpet bombing them day after day after day) was intense. My guide gave detailed info about the history and spirit of his countrymen and women that has led to a free Vietnam today. Definitely recommend a private tour so that you can ask questions and linger over parts of the exhibit at your own pace.

We had a wonderful morning with Lindy and her colleague Heen who was learning. We modified the tour a bit as we wanted to finish around lunchtime. It was a fantastic morning and they were both really knowledgeable and explained so much of the history of the Vietnam/ French war and then we learnt about the Vietnam/ American war as there was a lot of information about that also at the end of the tour. There were quite a few Vietnam soldiers at the Hoa Lo prison and when we were outside I asked Lindy if she thought they would mind having a photo. She said no they would be happy to and then spoke to them on our behalf they were so happy that we asked them and we all got photos with them and they were so friendly and welcomed us to Vietnam and wished our family well. Lindy made sure she had answered everything that we wanted to know about the history and it was also lovely to chat with her about her studies and her life. I highly recommend this tour to anyone that is traveling to Hanoi we learnt a lot

We enjoyed the tour a lot! Shalia took a lot of time for us and adjusted the tour to our interests, even spontaneously, which was really awesome!
We met at 8:30 at our hotel and we needed to withdraw local money (because we just arrived to VN the night before), so she walked shortly with us to the ATM, which didn’t work, so she kindly helped us to find the bank. Afterwards we went to the Vietnam Military History Museum, which just freshly opened in the new building, and Shalia explained us a lot about the history, we learned a lot. We spent there quite some time till noon and went to a nice restaurant afterwards. She helped us with taxis and restaurant she chose was awesome! Afterwards, we went to the Hoa Lo Prison, which was around the corner, and there we learned also a lot of interesting things! Briefly on the way we saw the famous train street and Shalia showed it to us as well because we got curious - it was an amazing experience.
She also answered a lot of our questions about Vietnam in general, which was great!
Of course, if you book this tour, you should pay for the food/entrance for the guide as well, but these are small additional expenses (+ you might want to give tips at the end)
We were glad that we booked this tour! Highly recommended!

Nam it was an amazing tour guide who really knew a lot about Vietnam history and how it has shaped the way things are now. He was able to answer pretty much any question we had even if it was a difficult one. He was very passionate about people learning the history of Vietnam and he was really accurate with all the dates of when things happened and gave a lot of background information that made the whole tour exceptionally enjoyable. I personally am not a fan of listening to history but after this tour, Nam has gotten me interested in history and I was not bored for even a second!

We booked this tour last minute and we were impressed that the organisers got in touch with us straight away to find out what we would like to see around Hanoi. Our guide was a very friendly student Victor who was super flexible, nice and helpful and showed us what we wanted to see and helped organize taxis. Our son is a military history buff and knows quite a lot about the places we visited, but said that he learned a couple of new things from Victor which is a plus.
I highly recommend this tour and Victor to anyone who would like to see Hanoi historical sites. Thank you!

I had the pleasure to have my Hanoi War Sites Tour with Nguyen Duc Nguyen. He came very punctually to pick me up, even though I offered to meet him on his way, so that's very kind of him. We went to the Mausoleum and the prison. The military Museum was sadly closed due to Tet. But even without it, we spent 4 hours on the Tour and Nguyen was really motivated and willing to share his knowledge of the Vietnamese history. I really appreciate his humble way of being and kindness. You should definitely book a Tour with him when you have the chance.

Absolutely ABYSMAL. Although our guide was a nice young man, the FIRST thing that he said was "Most of your sites have been closed due to the Corona virus." We walked 3 km. to one site that we couldn't get into. In the end, we saw NONE of the 5 sites advertised. In fact, Viator booked this tour for me AFTER Hoa Lo Prison had been closed! The student guide dejectedly walked us back to our hotel and apologized for the poor tour. We tipped him anyway, because he tried his best and it wasn't his fault. IT WAS YOUR FAULT, VIATOR!! You really dropped the ball. I have come to expect better from you.

Ci aspettavamo di poter condividere la giornata con un/a giovane studente appassionato/a di storia o della città di Hanoi o entrambe le cose invece abbiamo passato la giornata con un giovane uomo simpatico che di lavoro è developper e non molto afferrato sulla storia che ci ha purtroppo insegnato molto poco di cio che abbiamo visitato. Non viene precisato di Viator ma la prenotazione costa 5€ + bisogna pagare gli ingressi alla guida e il suo pranzo. Peccato davvero perché l'idea è davvero buona (ragione per la quale io e il mio ragazzo abbiamo preferito fare con studenti e non con guide sperimentate)
