This tour was absolutely amazing and worth every penny! Our guide gave local and historical insights, was friendly and happy to answer all of our questions, and gave us recommendations for both inside the castle grounds and Edinburgh in general. The castle and castle grounds are gorgeous and you really just can't top hearing the Scottish accent in any situation!

The tour was very average and not worth the money. The tour guide’s knowledge was highly superficial and not engaging. Granted, it was a bitterly cold day, but it was obvious that the guide just wanted to get the tour over and would as quickly as possible.

John was truly amazing. We have been on a lot of fantastic tours around the world (and some truly terrible ones) and can honestly say this is up there with the best. He was knowledgeable, chatty and was happy and able to answer any and all questions we had - no matter how strange. You can really tell he cares and even stayed at the end to answer many more questions we had as there was so much he clearly knew but didn't have time to share! One of the Best Tours We’ve Ever Done

We have taken more tours than I can count in places from Hawaii to Athens over the past 5 years, and John is definitely in the top 5% of guides we have had. He has deep knowledge of the history of not only the castle but also of Edinburgh and all of Scotland. He has great facility with and knowledge of the dates of every important event across all of these. He also emphasizes the important events we need to remember to take with us as acquired knowledge, and the dates they occurred. We have had way too many guides who fancy themselves stand-up comedians, and spend more time telling stupid jokes than focusing on the subject matter. John is clever enough to bring the material to life, with a bit of humor every now and then, whilst maintaining an informal graduate-seminar vibe. He is especially good at quizzing the group with a question someone might actually know the answer to every now and then. (E.g., how old was Mary, Queen of Scots when she became Queen?) Do not worry about the walking. Most of the uphill walking is on gradual slopes, and you will get plenty of breaks during John’s comments. I cannot recommend this tour enough. You will have fun, get a bit of exercise and learn more than you thought possible in 2 hours. And you can stay on to see more of the exhibits in the castle as long as you’d like. All Brilliant!
