Let down last minute - twice! Avoid. Costly mistake

Misha_M, Aug 2025
This was the trip we bought from Viator when they last-minute-cancelled our original trip to Machu Picchu with them. We booked with them from London. We then based everything around it: Buying our flights to Cusco from Lima. Our trains, our accommodation. and plans. We were so excited. The night before our trip to Machu Picchu I saw a notice on my calendar and checked it out. To my amazement, it was a ‘cancelled’ line through my diary entry of Machu Picchu. I actually thought it must be a mistake. I contacted Viator only to discover they really had cancelled our booking, apparently due to being unable to obtain tickets to Machu Picchu. However, the entire trip was sold to us based on the promise that the tickets were guaranteed. The tickets to Machu Picchu were included and no point did it say they were subject to availability. We were left high and dry. Obviously not as high as we wanted to be! We really genuinely implore you to avoid this company. The communication is atrocious. We booked the Sacred Valley tour with them and when I checked to see if that was still running, they told me it was cancelled! The crazy thing is, it wasn’t! I was just trying to see what time we would be picked up for the tour to the Sacred Valley and they told me it was cancelled. Luckily, I had made contact with the Tour provider and they told me it was still running and they had no idea why Viator had told me that. So much confusion. We wasted so much time and money and energy on this company. Had so much disappointment. Avoid. Avoid it all costs. This is a very unreliable company. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

Great tour company

Excellent tour company with a very helpful staff. They held my bags for me while I went to Macchu Picchu and sent them to my hotel. Everyone was so thoughtful and hospitable. Great company.

Ended up being ok

The trip coordinator was helpful and knowledgeable. The best part was they sent me a message right after I booked the tour and set up a video conference to go over everything within an hour of booking on Viator. There's actually no guide to show you around but they just purchase all the tickets on your behalf. There was supposed to be someone to pick me up from the train station but they didn't show up. This might be acceptable for the locals as it's a really safe and small town but for a foreign tourist who has never been there, it could be quite daunting. I ended finding the Ministry myself to buy the entrance ticket. The dinner arrangements was also very confusing, the person who was supposed to show up never did but the employee of another business partner showed up instead and was late. This could be very intimidating when you someone you don't know or expect just tells you to come with them at night. Also, his English was not understandable and didn't explain how the dinner worked or what we can order. The best part of the "tour" is that you have someone to message 24/7 for any questions you have. Otherwise, it's probably cheaper to book your own train and entrance tickets.

Best Machu Picchu experience

Let’s start with Carlos and Nixon, from Mega. They are amazing, got in contact with us before our trip and we ended up booking all of our tours with them. We loved them! The train ride is so enjoyable, breathtaking landscape. Jorge our tour guide in Machu Picchu was the absolutely best, he was so knowledgeable and help us amazing pictures. :-) the whole experience is a billion stars ⭐️. The only negative was the hostel in Aguas Calientes (which was pase of the tour), we could hear everything and were not able to rest well. Other than that, everything was perfect!
