This hike was beautiful and our guide was fantastic. The description of this hike as novice is very misleading. This is an approx. 11 km hike up in to the mountains, in the heat/humidity, and has at least 2,000 stairs. There are places to rest along the trail, but for the majority of the morning you are hiking along the mountain where there is no shade unless it is cloudy/raining of course. We started hiking around 0915 and got to the bus stop at Machu Picchu around 1700. Bring plenty to drink, breathable clothing, sunscreen, and insect repellant. All that being said, it was a beautiful hike and very rewarding. Our guide, Aldo, came to our hotel lobby the night before and gave us a briefing about our hike. He was incredibly helpful along the hike and very knowledgeable about the environment and history of the area. His English is very good and he did everything possible to make sure that we were safe, well taken care of, motivated, and where we needed to be at the right times. Transportation, entrance fees, lunch the day of the hike and dinner after hike, and hotel was all included. Coming up over the last staircase and seeing Machu Picchu in the sunset light was wonderful. And then having a private tour the next morning at sunrise was a once in a lifetime experience.
