Just finished the four-day Salkantay Trek. I’ve done a fair amount of hiking/camping over my 65 years and this was by far the most challenging and rewarding trip of my life. The landscape is breathtaking. The Peruvian people are warm and welcoming. The whole excursion was well-planned. The accommodations and the foot were excellent, and our guide, Wimber (Simba) was an exceptional person. Simba knew the trail - and everyone we met along the way - like the back of his hand. We all immediately bonded through his kind and jovial personality. He was patient and thoughtful and knew when to rally our group and when to take break. Along the way he shared so many interesting stories and facts about the local traditions, history, geology, agriculture, wildlife, archeology, and the people he knew who lived in the mountains. We became an instant family and Simba was the gracious host that glued it all together. This is a challenging trail at high altitude. Some of our group (including me) had altitude symptoms. Simba kept a close eye on everyone and occasionally provided alternatives (mule, car) when needed. I and a few others could not have completed this trek without his expert guidance. We all made it and enjoyed the spectacular trail and at the end, the magnificent citadel at Machu Picchu. If you find the mountains and the open trail inspiring, as I do, you will really appreciate this passage. I was deeply moved by the places and the people I met and exhilarated by the challenge. So happy I shared this trip with my son. My only tip: get connected on WhatsApp right away and ask questions. The Salkantay folks are very responsive.

Once In A Lifetime Incredible Experience!!

Amanda_R, Jun 2025
It is hard to find a simple way to express the magnificence of this experience. It is truly once-in-a-lifetime. We were thoroughly satisfied. Everything from our amazing guide Edgar, to every single meal we shared, the perfect lodgings for each night, the remarkable views from the top of the mountain to the bottom of the cloud forest and of course, Machu Picchu. Salkantay Trek does not miss a beat - it is a perfectly curated experience. I wish it wasn’t over! My only advice: please only participate if you are in GOOD SHAPE. This is not for the faint of heart. It is challenging and magnificent!

An experience you do not want to miss!

Freddy Apaza and his team did a fantastic job with the 4 day Salkantay Trek! They made our group comfortable, and were attentive to all of our needs! I highly recommend this opportunity to anyone!

Phenomenal Trek

Jake_W, May 2024
This is a breath-taking trek, both physically and visually. Marcos our guide was fantastic and truly poured all his energy and heart into giving us the best and most memorable trip possible. The trek is challenging, but some parts can be made easier with the aid of horses, etc, but this will cost extra. An amazing trip, definitely make time for it!

Intense and once in a lifetime

Gregory_R, Jul 2022
This was an incredible trip but I wish Viator was more clear about how strenuous and difficult it would be. I also wish they had sent out a list of things we would need at the time of booking instead of the night before when we were already in Cusco, had to buy a bunch of stuff, and then had to be up at 4am. That being said, if you go, make sure you get Jorge Q. As your guide. He was the absolute best and helped us survive.
