This excursion was the best! If you are sailing, this company was amazing!! They stop and you get treats on the way back! Juan Carlos and Hammer were amazing!! You wouldn’t be disappointed. Money well spent. More cost effective than through the boat. They also give you a lot of history.

This was a family trip for 13, ranging from age 10 to 80. Our tour guide Juan Carlos and our driver Harmayer were excellent. They took extra time with us since one of our group needed additional assistance. Juan's knowledge was outstanding. Both Juan and Harmayer were more than guides for us, they became the 14th and 15th member of our group. The ruins were beautiful. Highly recommend!!

Fantastic tour

marc_g, Jul 2026
It was a great tour with a highly knowledgable driver and guide. I’d highly recommend the tour and the stop off to get fruit was amazing. I only would have liked the van to be a bit cooler..!

Response from Host, Jul 2026

We're happy to hear you enjoyed the tour and the fresh fruit stop. We appreciate your feedback about the van, and while the summer heat can be especially intense, we certainly take note of these comments. Thank you for choosing to explore Costa Maya with us!

Mayan Ruins.

Great tour and informational on Mayan culture. Hot and humid at the ruins. Bring insect repellant. Stop at fruit stand was nice.

During the summer months...

Lance_T, Jun 2026
During the summer months it is hot, the ride is about 45 minutes in a 15 passenger van with 15 other full grown adults all of varying body sizes, it will be tight and warm. Use the restroom before getting in the van as there are no stops for the trip mostly because there is nothing outside the port besides a couple of fuel stations. Very little sites along the way. Obey the signs, respect the site, pick up trash if you see it, don’t club beyond the marked areas. Time is short on site so don’t wander far as your group being able to see everything depends on you being accounted for by the guide. Speaking of guides, they did great, knowledgeable, helpful and able to provide water and beverages. We even got a surprise of fresh pineapple from a vendor in “Pineapple Town”. Kudos for that!

Response from Host, Jul 2026

Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful and detailed review, Lance! We truly appreciate your feedback, and we're happy to hear that you enjoyed the fresh pineapple surprise on the way back!

Aenea_P, Jun 2026
Everyone from our group got to the meeting place across from the ruin replica early so we were able to leave early. Xiomara was very knowledgeable in answering questions about local like and ancient life. Though it was hot (May) we were able to whip through the ruins before large groups came, never feeling rushed. We brought our 10 month old daughter with us and had her in a carrier most of the time. There was a break were she was able to explore some of the ruins, which she enjoyed. On the drive back, we stopped for fresh pineapple and my husband and I were able to try the local spice which was smoky and spicy, very good on the pineapple!

Response from Host, Jul 2026

Thank you so much for your wonderful review, Aenea! We're glad Xiomara helped make your visit both informative and enjoyable, and it's great to hear your family had such a memorable experience together!

Educational experience

Susan_S, Jun 2026
Well-run excursion. Took 3 grandsons, ages 12, 16 & 16 to see the ruins. All of them enjoyed the informative experience. The pineapple stop was delicious. No issues with getting back to port on time. RECOMMENDED.

Robin_J, May 2026
JC was an excellent and incredibly knowledgeable guide. The ride there was nice and they provided drinks (soda/water) along the way. The van was very comfortable. At the ruins, there were a lot of people but he made sure we saw it all and educated us on so much. On the way back, we even stopped and had some samples of delicious pineapple 🍍 . Best part was the seats reclined in the van, bc we were exhausted on the way back! Overall, a great excursion and learned so much! My 12 year old loved it too.

Disabled vet finally seeing the Ruins.

Holly_S, May 2026
Our guide his name was Juan Carlos and he was so funny and made everything a great experience. He had plenty of water for everyone so we stayed hydrated on a hot day seeing the ruins but explained a lot completely in detail. He even had laminated pictures to show explaining other stuff. He was very informative. The ruins were definitely a slight to see. My husband does have a wheelchair so I would say that if you have a wheelchair. The rough terrain is a little complicated, but we did okay.

Amazing Mayan moments

Trish_K, May 2026
We had a little snafu to start our day…I had messaged with the company via the Viator app, and was told 9:30 am for departure. At 8:45, our driver called to say we were late. 20 minutes later of running off the boat and through the maze of vendors to get through the pier, and we were in the van to go. Octavian was passionate to share Mayan culture and facts with our group. It was a super interesting way to spend our 40 minute drive to the ruins. The ruins were amazing. It was HOT, but there is a TON of shade along the walkways, so you can keep cool. Octavian also carried cooled water bottles for us to drink when our own supplies ran out. (Don’t forget water!) On the way home, our van stopped at the fresh fruit stand and we each received a few slices of fresh pineapple to snack on on the way home. They also stopped just a bit down the road for our soda drinks. We were dropped right in front of the pier when our day was complete. Overall, a little bit of culture for the family along with some sightseeing and snacks.

Great way to visit the ruins!

Kelly_L, Apr 2026
Great experience overall! I would definitely recommend if you are interested in seeing the ruins. We saw others on tours from cruise ships and they were in very large busses. Our tour had just ten people so it was a much more intimate experience and we could ask questions and hear. Our tour guide Yamada was fantastic.and gave us a lot of information about the town and the ruins. She gave a lot of history on the Maya people and culture during the ride out to the ruins and then gave us info and time to explore while at the ruins. She was happy to answer all of our questions and seemed very knowledgeable. I really enjoyed the visual aids she used to illustrate different things. On the ride home she stopped at a local fruit stand and bought us some pineapple slices. They had a cooler of cold water which was nice because it was very warm. If you choose this tour, make sure to read the instructions on how to get to the tour meeting place. You have to leave the cruise port completely to get to their booth and they cruise lines don’t make it easy to get out. (They want to keep the money for themselves). It is about a 1/4 mile walk. You may also have to wait a bit for everyone in your party so be prepared for that as well. We were a little disappointed as 6 of the people on our tour delayed us close to an hour. They did drive us to the Main street to take a picture by the Mahaual sign while we were waiting, which was a nice gesture.

VIP Experience

Michael_D, Apr 2026
There was just another couple with us, which made it very personal. Our guide was awesome and very knowledgeable. He even told us about the area and upcoming projects at the port. We were provided snacks and drinks, with him even stopping at a local stall and buying us fresh pineapple!

Response from Host, Apr 2026

Thanks so much for feeding back our services, we are always compromised to give you the best aroun.. I was a pleasure to have you with us... hopping we serve you again... be well..

Very informative tour.

Mike_L, Apr 2026
This was exactly what I thought it would be, with great service, good driving and an informative tour. One thing to be careful of is the pickup point. It is a 5-10 minute walk once you leave the port area, but the driver dropped us off right at the port area entrance. I would recommend anyone who is thinking about this tour to take it! I would give it 4.5 stars but closer to 5 than 4.

Response from Host, Apr 2026

Thanks for feedback the job of our local team... we do really appreciate and we sorry not be able to pick you up more close, but port is private and they do not allow us to get inside of their property...

A very good tour!

Lynda_H, Mar 2026
There is a lot of walking! We did over 10,000 steps by 3:00 pm….. off the ship, off the pier… out of the port and finally to where we met up with our tour guide and driver. It was definitely worth it….. Ishmael was a wonderful guide and taught us much. The ruins are amazing to see. The pineapple was very sweet and tasty. The ride to the ruins was about 45 minutes but it allowed Ishmael to teach us. I recommend this tour.

Response from Host, Apr 2026

Make sure Octavio is your tour guide. He is beyond awesome. He is helpful and full of knowledge about the towns and Mayan culture. We had an amazing time on this tour and would definitely book again!!

Perfect Small-Group Tour to Chacchoben from Costa Maya Cruise Port

Kim_B, Jan 2026
This was an excellent small-group tour to the Chacchoben ruins. The van pickup was right outside the Costa Maya cruise port gate, an easy walk from the ship. Our guide, Octavio, was fantastic — personable and knowledgeable. He brought the history of the Maya to life and answered all our questions. The ruins themselves are impressive and beautifully nestled in the jungle. The small group size made the experience intimate and flexible, much better than a crowded bus tour. I highly recommend this specific tour for a smooth visit to Chacchoben from the cruise port.

Mayan ruins are fantastic but the tour leaves much to be desired

Fred_C, Jan 2026
Unfortunately after communicating specifically with the your company and getting a time to be at the meeting place, they kept us waiting for an additional hour, disrupting the rest of our plans. They crammed the van full of guests. The tour guide was pleasant and willing to answer any question, but unfortunately some of his answers were a bit sketchy. We appreciated the stop to get pineapple, but we’re not sure why he drove us around his village on the way back. It was out of the way and there wasn’t much to see. We had expected more of the tour. The ruins themselves were absolutely fantastic and we highly recommend a visit to them.

Response from Host, Jan 2026

Hello there, we are very sorry to what happened in this excursion. We will take action in this matter to make sure that the people don't wait more then 30 minutes, that's what normally we do. But sometimes our team try to wait the most they can and of course ruins plans of other people... please next time you have plans and want to come back as normal time let the tour guide know about it.. in that way we try not to spend time more then normal... In the meantime we apologized for what happened to you... And if you can please send me the name of the guide who was with you to tell him about this issue... thanks.

Great Tour!

Michael_P, Jan 2026
Our tour guide was wonderful! She was a local who provided so much information and insight every mile of the way. She led us through the archeological ruins, educating us, and providing plenty of time for pictures and questions. We covered a lot of ground. But our driver handled it in a timely manner. We couldn’t have been more pleased.

Great Trip! Must-do afternoon adventure!

Mark_I, Jan 2026
Very informative journey and a wonderful day stepping back into history. The tour guide was excellent and the archeological site itself was beautiful.

We had a good experience. Learnt a lot about the Mayans, the guides both in the van and at the site were very knowledgeable.

I would not Recommend CME

Sanjeev_L, Dec 2025
We lost time due to another couple missing the cut off time, so we had to stop at a gas station for another taxi to get them delivered to our van. The guide at the ruins wasted too much time talking and barely had time to take any photos or actually walk around the ruins. We felt very rushed. I would not recommend this company, I would like a full refund.

Response from Host, Dec 2025

Hello there, we are sorry about your inconvenience, but we have to wait for this couple because it was close to your vehicle, but the excursion was able to be completed. About the tour guide we will fix this details and make sure never happen again. But is not fair that you ask for refunding if you received the tour to the ruins, local people depends of this money, it seems not matter to you and is ok, we as a company give you back your money and wish you the best.

This was a great tour. Highly recommend it. Ishmael was our guide and Sandra was our driver. We loved how local the experience was and nice small group size. The personal touches like seeing Ishmael’s village and stoping at the fruit stand were the best to understand how life is different for us but also very much the same too. The history shared about Mayans was excellent and the park was beautifully done. Just pay attention to the instructions sent to you for the meet up spot. But if you get confused the other tour guide companies are all very nice and help you find the right tour! Costa Maya guides are all very kind.

Response from Host, Dec 2025

Thanks so much for taking tour time and feeding back your experience with us, we are more than thankful to make this excursion a memorable for you... send you the best wishes and blessings for you and your family...

Must see and visit with the best tour guide.

Nate_J, Nov 2025
Our guide Rafael was extremely knowledgeable about the ruins we visited and made this tour really enjoyable and educational. His knowledge and history of the Mayans and Aztecs was second to none. We had a small group of 8 to 9 people so the tour itself was nice. This was one of the most interesting tours we have ever had. If you visit Costa Maya, try to get Rafael as your guide. We even stopped on the way back and had tastes of the honey pineapple from a local stand, it was absolutely delicious. Thank Rafael for the education you shared with us.

Very knowledgeable guide

Kristy_B, Oct 2025
Our guide was very knowledgeable of the ruins and Mayan history in general. There is about 30 to 40 min walk to the ruins but some benches available if you need to sit down for a bit. We stopped on the way back at a roadside stand for some honey pineapple that was very good. Bring bug spray because mosquitoes might be an issue. Overall, if you want to learn some history on the area then this trip is for you.

Response from Host, Oct 2025
