We had an amazing time on the Costa Maya ATV & Open Bar Adventure, and the biggest reason was our tour guide, Carlos!
From the moment we met him, Carlos was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable about the area. He made the entire experience fun while sharing interesting information about Costa Maya. You could tell he genuinely enjoys what he does and wants everyone to have a great time.
My 11-year-old son was pretty disappointed at first because he wasn’t old enough to drive the ATV. Carlos went above and beyond to make his day. Since my son has experience riding ATVs, Carlos safely took us to a back road where he was able to drive for a bit. Seeing the excitement on my son’s face made the entire excursion worth it, and it’s something he’ll never forget. Carlos didn’t have to do that, but he truly cared about making sure everyone had an incredible experience.
After the ATV ride, we were taken to a beach where we enjoyed food, drinks, and relaxed by the water. Unfortunately, there was quite a bit of seaweed that day, which caused a noticeable odor. That’s obviously beyond anyone’s control and had absolutely nothing to do with the tour itself.
One thing to be aware of is that once you arrive at the beach, there are quite a few local vendors offering massages, hair braiding, jewelry, souvenirs, and other items. They are polite and simply trying to make a living, so just be prepared if you’re not interested.
Overall, this excursion was fantastic, and Carlos deserves all the praise. His kindness, professionalism, and willingness to go the extra mile turned a great excursion into an unforgettable one. If you book this tour, I hope you’re lucky enough to get Carlos as your guide—you won’t be disappointed!

The tour staff (I think they were called Toucan Tours?) made us feel welcome! Our "ATV adventure" was not what I expected, only up and down a few city streets and the main road along the beach which was interesting, but it was smelly season with the sargassum cleanup going on. Carlos was a GREAT guide for our ATV adventure - he was very knowledgeable and shared much about the local culture. We were lucky to be right behind him so he was able to stop and talk with us constantly. I wish the others in our group were able to hear his knowledge, so they did not get the same tour experience as we did.
The beach time portion of the tour wasn't really that "pristine beach" you might envision - just a small packed section of clean beach with one vendor after another and tables so close together you couldn't really relax. Foodservice was slow, but our host Jimmy made sure everyone in our party had drinks and he was a fun guy! So we adjusted our expectations, enjoyed the culture and the people around us, heck we're in the Carribean!

Our guide was great so this review is no way a reflection on him or the actual tour company. This was our first experience in Costa Maya. The areas we visited were a dump (literally) and roads were full of Sargasm and smelled horrible. The beach area we went to afterwards was pleasant. The staff was friendly and helpful. The food was good. We had beef nachos and fajita's. The beach merchants were a bit trying as we were approached every few minutes by another, which made it challenging to relax and enjoy the area. They did have barriers up around the beach, which allowed people to be in the ocean without having to deal with sargasm, which was nice.

We had a great time on this excursion. Our guide was Carlos and he was amazing, he made us feel safe and comfortable!! The beach after the ATV tour was also great, had good food and drinks. If I ever come back to Mahahual I will definitely book this excursion again. 10/10 experience, highly recommend. Viva Mexico!!

The ATV ride was so fun! Carlos our tour guide was so great and made sure we were safe and had the chance to stop and see the sights. He was very knowledgeable and super friendly. The food for lunch was delicious. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone

Carlos was an excellent tour guide! From showing us how to use the ATV’s to explaining the culture to stopping at some notable places. We had a wonderful open bar on the beach with lunch included and a lovely beach experience. I ended my tour with a quick 30 minute massage.

Had a great time . Would greatly recommend Carlos as he shared a lot of information about the area. The only bad thing is the smell from the sea weed that washes up every day. Our guide recommended coming between November and May to avoid the smell

Carlos (i believe was his name) was great ! We rode atvs through the streets of Costa Maya and Mahahual. We were not able to do the full tour due to the seaweed cleaning that was happening but Carlos made up the time lost by stopping at a local beach with a bar. He also stopped at a couple of site seeing places for some pictures. The beach that is included in the tour was decent looking. There is a lot of soliciting on the beach though, every minute another person would come up to the table and offer to sell us something.

Arrival to the excursion desk was easy- very short walk and we felt very safe. However, we did not feel that this excursion was as described.
When greeted by our tour guide (who was wonderful), we were informed that the tour was a “city tour”, and the jungle was “inaccessible” on the island due to the fact it is a “swamp”. We were told that we would be driving the ATV on city streets, our first disappointment.
Our tour guide did allow us to stop at one local tequila tasting shop and a beach bar hut, where we could use restrooms or order a drink. In our opinion, this was a poor use of our tour time, since our clock was capped at one hour.
We did take another QUICK stop at the lighthouse and costa maya sign for a photo, but then told we would be heading back to the shop.
We were shuttled from the shop to the “all inclusive beach”, called “mamas”. The beach was overcrowded and dirty. We sat to order our food and drink and many locals swarmed our table to sell their goods.
My son decided to walk to the water to wash his hands prior to eating, and encountered a needle on the beach. Absolutely disturbed, we immediately left the beach and headed back to the ship for medical.
I did contact Viator to make them aware and they were wonderful about accommodating my request for partial refund.
The port in Costa Maya is amazing- safe inside, several pools that are free and lots of great wares for sale as well as restaurants. I would save your money on Costa Maya excursions. The beaches are not great and clearly, not safe either.

I feel the tour was not good as the shore excursions for Virgin. I wanted muddy, water holes for my ride. Instead we were taken on straight back roads and the food was not good at the restaurant. Our guide took us to the worse looking part of the beach asking if we wanted a photo. Why not allow a photo in front of the beach sign? Additionally, too many people repeatedly selling you goods when you are trying to eat.
I feel that the tour was misleading in terms of how you were to get back to port and I didn’t know a beach option for as included for three hours and would have prepared to bring bathing suit attire.
Lastly, my boyfriend’s ATV was malfunctioning and he had to continuously use the gas accelerator as there was no idle option for his ATV. The guide clearly told him what to do so if you have broken ATV’s just fix them. Don’t give us broken equipment.

We don't want you to understand us, but I think you should know that motorcycles are machines that you never know when they will fail and that many times it is out of our hands. And regarding the beach, I suppose you should have read what your excursion included before buying it. It says OPEN BAR ATV ADVENTURE and it was also explained to you here at the office what was included. But anyway, once again, an apology for what happened.

There was no tour. We just followed the guide, Sandra in our ATV. She did not share any interesting information about Mahahual. She stopped for a rest with her friend and proceeded to chat. ..no restroom was available to us. I ran off the road and no aid was rendered; even though I had visible scratches and cuts. Overall, you are better off renting a golf cart and exploring the city.

The atv's were fun. Our tour guide was great. Toucan tours dropped off at the wrong beach club and had to wait to be picked up. Got dropped off at another beach club and it was the wrong one. The manager Jackie was very nice and was able to accommodate us. So frustrating that they didn't know which place we were supposed to be at. Probably won't book again.

My client enjoyed the ATV adventure part and especially enjoyed that it was just she and her boyfriend with the guide. She said they got conflicting information about the “open bar” which ended up being 2 drinks per person and one food item which is not how it was advertised.

Love that a ride was provided from and to the Costa Maya Port. The ATV staff and waters were friendly and attentive. The ATV route was not what hoped for, no scenic views, just a ride thru neighborhoods. The food was lackluster. The beach is not the best.

No extreme, no jungle…just riding a slow ATV to beach instead of cheaper taxi! Do not do this!!!! Been to costa maya four times…worst excursion ever. Beach bar was fine…just take a taxi!!!
