We had a wonderful experience with our guide checking out a local market and then learning to play mahjong. The guide was friendly and personable and was eager to show us his neighbourhood and patient with his teaching. It was also great to be in a less touristed area and see a different side of Chengdu.

I recommend this tour to anyone. Lance showed me around the local market, provided very tasty tea and taught me all I needed to know about Mahjong. I was solo so there was only the two of us and normally you need 4 people to play Mahjong, but the owners of the establishment (that also show you how to cook during Chilli Cool cooking class) joined us and we played a couple of rounds together. I would gladly revisit this experience and everyone visiting Chengdu and willing to play some Mahjong should as well. :)

Discovering Mahjong, but also making friends

Very grateful experience I recommend to anyone coming to Chengdu. You really can see how locals live in those non touristic areas. I felt like home, if the tour guide were my very old friend and we were just playing mahjong while enjoying local te and fruit. I also loved the smoked tofu (tasted like Spanish smoked cheese) so I just took some more to my hotel. Thank you really much for the experience and your kindness! I'll practice more and challenge you guys when I'm back.

Excellent customer service from the start. Tour operator contacted me almost immediately after I booked to clarify my hotel location for pick up. Then, as we were driving to the location, my guide pointed out different sites we were passing that I might want to check out later. We walked through a marketplace on the way to the mahjong houses and my guide pointed out different produce that was in season and different herbs used in Chinese medicine. My guide asked if I smoked and when I said no, he found a house where no one was smoking. He did an excellent job explaining the game to me, showing me how the tiles were organized and the general rules of the game. We played several games with him giving me advice and where we could see each other’s tiles. We then played more games without being able to see each other’s tiles. I am completely hooked on this game now.
