This place is not supported by the Colombian Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism or the Colombian Government. Spontaneously it is the Totumo Volcano Workers Association and their families who manage this site, that is, they are local and native people who work there, there are 3 people on the tour who will help you by taking photos, giving you massages and helping you remove the mud in exchange for an additional tip. It carries low denomination tickets to tip if you want to use its services ($10,000 COP each service). These services are optional, not mandatory.

Overall my least favorite excursion. The volcano was a quick experience (which was great) but the TIP scene was like being in a was zone! I felt totally comfortable the entire time. And the lunch was not a bonus because the fish was sooo hard.

    Response from Host, Jul 2025

Before carrying out the activity we explain to our customers how Volcano Dynamics works and that if you do not want to use their services in exchange for tips ($5,000 COP - 1.3 USD per person ) you must tell the native people that "no, gracias - no thanks" and nothing happens. I regret that your experience at the Volcano was bad and we would like to do things differently but reasoning with the natives is complicated even for us. They definitely shouldn't have gotten on the bus and I'll talk to the guide so this situation doesn't happen again.

    Great until it wasn't

I've taken the mud volcano tour before, but with a different tour guide. Because of this, I'm able to give an effective rating. To start--Booked via Viator. You can book this directly with the company via WhatsApp( the company name is Google-able and legit), you will save about $10 per person. They offered pick-up. That was convenient, but a little lengthy picking everyone up. The bus we nice, clean, newer, air-conditioned. On the way, they give us 2 small croissants for breakfast. They offer coffee, juice, and a piece of candy. They explain the day en espanol, but give the summarize version in English to the few English speakers. Briefly, it will cost 10mil for massage(optional)in the mud, 10mil to be cleaned off by the lake ladies(optional), & 10mil per phone for photo taking(optional). All things you leave on the bus during the experience, except your sandals and towel, and a phone if you want then to take photos. The bus remains locked until everyone on the tour has completed the experience, and then they will open it so you can retrieve money to may for services/extras. Extras, being empanadas or drinks while you wait... and tips. The volcano: You arrive and unload. Some staff take your phone. Another repeatedly says to you, "shoes," and then points to himself. You're given a ticket to enter and climb the stairs of the volcano. At the top there is another staff who has a bag for everyone's shoes in the group. You wait your turn to enter the mud. Before doing so, the phone guy(s) have you select your phone from the bag. They take several photos.. As soon as you enter, the massage guys pull you and instruct you what to do and begin massaging you. The don't ask. IT IS UP TO YOU TO REJECT IT! You spend about 15-30min in the mud. At any given time, there are about 15 people in there too. When you exit, you CAREFULLY descend the stairs, grab your shoes from a different guy(but could be any of them), walk to the lake, where a lady will take your hand and lead you to other ladies to rinse you off. Again, they don't ask permission. IT'S UP TO YOU TO REJECT THIS SERVICE! You get rinsed, exit and go to a waiting area where you can buy a drink and/or an empanada while you wait for the rest of the group. And apparently you can buy souvenir mud....NOW.... along the way, everyone who touched you gave you their names when they were finished with you. You'd assume it's for customer service and/or reviews.... eh, perhaps. But now it's time to open the bus to pay for your service..... and now is where a great experience turns bad..... waiting for you is EVERY STAFF MEMBER THERE--all the guys who handled the shoes, massage, phones, buying drinks, and lake ladies.... about 18 people HOUNDING you, asking for a tip just because the talked to you... no, because they LOOKED at you, they wanted a tip.. and they all seemed to know where the gringo table was because guess what, that is where to all were. 4 gringos and 18 sharks... for 5min.. a shark attack. I paid the 10mil per service plus 10mil to the guy who kept telling me, "shoes" and asking, "for me?" But bless his heart, the other American came out pocket 250mil. It was disgusting. I stood up and told them all they were doing too much because they absolutely were.. YES, it's enough to make a 5 star experience go to a 2 star. Next we went to a private beach club. Nothing spectacular about it, but it was private. The beach was private and that made it worthwhile. Upon arrival you're given a watermelon smoothie. Lunch was typical, but decent. The fish was excellent. You are given a total of 3hrs to relax at the pool or beach. And we are dropped of by 4pm at our pickup point. The difference at the mud volcano from this your an day last.. the pricing. The other one was $21 more and didn't include a beach time. It included lunch at a restaurant... and that was nice... .. BUT what that difference included was the cost of the massage and the lake ladies... aaaannd shower there.... aaaaand souvenirs mud...aaaaaand the guides themselves took photos with their phone and sent to us. And the shoes, we'll we just set them at the top of the volcano. We didn't even need to bring them up thr volcano... and guess what... NOT A SINGLE BIT OF THE SHARK ATTACK. So you csn imagine my 2nd experience was a bit of a shell shock. I'd imagine as the guides were explaining to the group on the bus en route to the volcano, they they mentioned what ALL to expect. It was a 7-10min briefing with several laughs. Our briefing was mayyyyyybe 2-3min, summed up. I can correlate that with who the staff attacked at the end of the experience vs who they didn't attack. This review is to prepare you. But the tour company gets the blame in my eyes, because they know what goes down and they can take measures to minimize or prevent it JUST like my first tour company.
