The mud tour was great! Our tour guide made sure to tell us all of the relevant information when we arrived, and the tour, including transportation to and from the volcano, was very well organized. Overall, it was a wonderful ecotourism experience, would recommend to anyone visiting Cartagena!

      Wonderful experience

      Dana_K, May 2025
The most important thing to know is there is no shade during this adventure. You must climb stairs to the mud pit, you will wait on these stairs and because there is no shade it is hot!! Bring your flip flops to the top and don't let them take them. The mud pit is amazing. You are literally suspended in the mud and you feel weightless. Lather this mud everywhere , it leaves your skin feeling silky smooth. Once you get out you need to decend stairs and walk to the river, this is why you need your flip flops because the pavement is hot!! The river is where the ladies will wash the mud off, be careful if you're a man, because they will take your shorts off and may even give you a little "extra wash". Once you are done, make sure everyone who touched you knows you tipped them, thr men who message you in the pit and the ladies that wash you, they all expect tips and are very persistent.

Mud volcano is a core memory you must make!

      Janessa_R, Feb 2025
The time waiting is almost as fun as the time in the mud volcano. Lots of vendors to eat and drink while you wait. Line gets long bc a lot of people are traveling there. Time inside is about 15-20min but it feels GREAT. They make you wash off in a local lake/water hub after the mud volcano dip bc mud is so heavy and then you can rinse off in showers and change BRING WATER SHOES

      Good

This was a nice experience to have for the first time. I wish they had a time limit to organize people in the mud but that’s not a tour guide issue. The guide does speak English and explains everything. They organized tips at the end of the excursion for the men that massages in the mud, the person who takes your photo and the person who washes you off at the lake, you can decline all extra services because they are all optional.

      Nandita_R, Dec 2023
they cancelled on us 30 minutes after they were supposed to pick us up so we didn’t even have the time to reschedule with another company. extremely poor communication from the company- they didn’t tell us what was going on until we asked.

      Response from Host, Jan 2024

Unfortunately, there are public order circumstances that require cancellation of the tour for your safety and that of us.

      You’ll float too

      Melissa_P, Nov 2023
This really exceeded my expectations. True the volcano itself isn’t very impressive looking but the sensation of being in the mud is so interesting! The views are pretty as well! We had an absolute blast! The tipping is a little uncomfortable and overwhelming as everyone is waiting for theirs at the end (the guy who massaged you, the guys taking your pics, and the women who helped you get the mud off). So just be prepared and have your monies ready to go. It’s an awesome experience!

Totumo Volcano Experience is a Must!

      Angela_S, Sep 2023
We loved lying/standing in the mud in the Volcano and getting a lovely massage while lying in the mud. We also loved getting washed off in the river, but we wished we were advised that we needed to give many tips (propinas) to everyone who helped make our experience so memorable. We would have taken adequate bills for everyone. Their help was well worth the tips!

      Don't do it!!

      Kentrice_W, Aug 2023
I gave it one star only because the tour guide was nice. But other than that the worst experience I had in Colombia! The tour van was dirty and the air did not work. The driver was stopped by the police and we had to sit in the van with no air for 30mins. He was rude to the tour guide. We did not make it to the excursion.

      Response from Host, Aug 2023

Good morning, we are sorry for what happened. but these days there have been several protests where they close the roads and we cannot access

Personal experience. Tip each person individually!!

      Annekia_D, Jul 2023
The experience was nice But be prepared to get attacked for TIPS. Tips is not voluntary its MANDATORY !!! so make sure you walk with enough money for each person who claimed they did something for you. You have to tip the locker person, person who takes your photo , guy who massage you and a bunch of ladies who claimed they bathe you in the lake. The tour guy will watch them trying to gang on you , I had to tell her open the van so I can get away from them . I gave one person tip for everyone but they don’t want to share, everyone wants their own tip, which I wasn’t aware of because the tour guy (lady) keep saying it’s voluntary no it’s not , you better have money for those people individually. I make sure I bring enough money for tip based on reviews I saw on here!! Just didn’t know they don’t like to split .. Stop chasing tourist away and be more organized.

      Shikara_S, Jul 2023
Book this tour for 2_3pm pick up at hotel.. tried contacting company at 1.50pm to confirm time etc. No response, reached out few more times and nothing. Only to have a hotel staff call the contact number and was told the tour was canceled 😞 😐 this is now too late to book another tour. Very disappointed as thus was most anticipated excursion for us. Reached out to Viator and they assured refund which was received in 24hours.

      Response from Host, Jul 2023

Buens dias, lamentablemente estabamos en temporada de lluvias con tormentas electricas y tenemos que cancelar cuando esto sucede, ya que es lodo y con la lluvia se pone muy resbaladizo.

      Slippery when muddy!

      Brittney_S, Jul 2023
Nice excursion. Driver and tour guide were friendly. The mud bathing portion was different to say the least. The masseuse did a good job. The ladies that washed you in the end were thorough in cleaning you. No complaints. You’ll like it experience.

      Unique experience

Definitely and cool and unique experience. The locals are so helpful with everything, just make sure you leave a tip.

      Noera_G, May 2023
I have never done anything like this before and I stepped out of my comfort zone and went here. It was relaxing & a very good experience.

      Operator canceled on us

      Josh_J, May 2023
Operator canceled the tour an hour before our scheduled pickup time. They charge in full if the customer camels within 24 hours though why don't they pay the customers if they cancel the tour?

      Response from Host, May 2023

Hello, we refunded all of your money, and I do it the same way when the passenger cancels at the last minute because there has been an inconvenience, I recommend that you review the statement to verify the refund

      Magical experience if you...

      Deb_S, Mar 2023
Magical experience if you just go with the flow! I read to bring $$ for tips and still wish I brought more - the massages, the washing, the photos were all so helpful and great.

      Waste of time and money

      Petar_R, Mar 2023
It’s a dried mud cone with a muddy pool size 3.5mx3.5m. You climb up and down very unstable stairs. The changing room is small and rudimentary, there is no shower but you are washed in the muddy bay. Everyone is asking for tips. You stay dirty until your hotel. No volcano in sight, mud probably comes from the muddy lake next to it.

      Mud Bath

      Willie_W, Mar 2023
You will basically be playing in mud, not much more to it. From the sale pitch it’s volcanic ash but there is no volcano….so I am not really sure but it was a nice ride from the city and an enjoyable experience.

      Great little touristic...

      DANNY_P, Jan 2023
Great little touristic activity. You have people driving and guiding you to the location. They connect you with people in the Mud Volcano. You leave your belongings in locker, and the people who bring you also wait by the lockers. Someone else guides you to the top of mud volcano and another person holds your phone and takes pictures if you choose. People are in the mud volcano who will massage you in the mud. You come out and ladies will wash you in the river. All of these individuals expect a tip at the end. I recommend 2k to 10k col pesos. So bring change.

      Interesting experience terrible tour company

      Meher_J, Dec 2022
This experience was definitely interesting, but this company was terrible. We booked an English guided tour. The tour guide barely spoke any English. All she did was pick us up from our hotel and then take us to the bus where she told us we would be going to the volcano. She gave no explanation of the itinerary or history of the volcano. Once we got on the bus she left us with the bus driver who spoke no English and did not come to the volcano. The volcano itself looks much smaller than the pictures. It is not impressive at all. The mud itself was interesting. After that you are taken to this lake where these women will aggressively wash you off in front of everyone. They will grope you and force you to strip. There are not any nice changing rooms or showers there. We thought we would be able to wash our hair after. That is not the case. Definitely wear your swimsuit before coming. Don’t wear shoes, wear flip flops and bring a towel. The worst part of this experience was the communication. We had no idea where to meet and when. We called all the numbers multiple times. They texted us at 2:45 to meet at 2:30 with no explanation of what to bring or where we should go or what the bus looked like. We then waited at the location for 30 minutes before they came.

We had a great time. Communication was great. They picked us up and dropped us off at our hotel. They also made sure that we enjoyed the whole experience from beginning to end!

Thank you for supporting us in difficult times! I'm so glad they had fun

      Great experience at Tutomo

      Rey_O, Oct 2022
The staff from the tour agency to the locals running the volcano were professional and courteous. Only problem would be people/kids playing and splashing mud. Is not a pool or beach! Someone could get mud in their eyes. The staff did their best to fix the issue.

      Response from Host, Oct 2022

      Thank you so much

      Great service. Amazing experience.

      Sakena_M, Sep 2022
This was such an awesome experience! Everything went so smoothly. Going in the afternoon was the best option. Be prepared to be massaged. There really wasn’t even a chance to decline as it happened so fast so if you don’t want a massage make sure to say so before you get in the mud. Make sure to bring cash to tip the nice ladies who take you to wash the mud off of you in the water. The shower afterwards and the locker room was very nice and convenient too! I highly recommend this trip. Our skin felt so soft from the mud! Service was great.

      Response from Host, Sep 2022

      Gracias!

Enjoy the excursion but buyer beware!

      DeJuan_H, Jul 2022
BOOK WITH A DIFFERENT VENDOR! The mud volcano itself was wonderful. Absolutely zero complaints with that portion of the experience. The mud bath felt amazing, my skin felt refreshed, and purified! Would definitely do again, BUT WITH A DIFFERENT VENDOR! Communication leading up to the experience left me desiring more. Our van was 45 minutes late picking us up. Our group was mostly in good spirits until the van broke down with a transmission issue and we had to walk 15 mins to the volcano. We asked for extra time in the mud when they told us our time was up. On the way back, the new van broke down and overheated. No apology, no refund, no discount, no nothing! Book elsewhere if you want to do this excursion. Bring plenty of cash for tips.

      Amazing!!

      Andre_W, Jul 2022
I liked the hotel pickup. When you arrive, there are lockers to store your belongings. The experience was amazing! You literally are floating in the volcano and being in the center was an experience. The mud is warm and not too heavy. Afterward you go to the river where the woman clean you off. Definitely being money b/c you are tiling the guide, the transportation, and the women that clean you off.

      Response from Host, Jul 2022

Great experience!!! It was thrilling and a beautiful view while in the mud bath! Good service to and from.

      New fun experience

      Philomena_I, Jul 2022
This experience was one for the book. My friends and I never done something like this before. The bus ride was a bit long but that was expected. When we got there, it was in the country side of Colombia. Everyone was very nice, there’s people selling stuff like food and drinks there. It was a bit slippery on the stairs to get up there so be careful. We got in the mood, got massages in there and took some nice pictures.

      Fun in the mud

      Cool Experience

      Candace_G, Jun 2022
It was an interesting and fun experience. We went in the afternoon and it was a good time because it wasn't too hot and there weren't so many people that we couldn't stay long in the volcano. The tour guide was nice. The only think I didn't like was being harassed for tips at the end of the experience. They didn't ask if I wanted the services they provide like the massage and wash-off in the lake. They just did it and wait outside for you to to tip them. I didn't mind tipping, it was just the way that it was done. A guy offered to let me wear his flip flops so I wouldn't have to walk on rocks and then asked me for a tip for that later. It's a good experience if you look over that part. Just be prepared to take pesos for tipping purposes.

Touristy and weird yet quite unique adventure.

      Kim_L, May 2022
After reading reviews and blog about it, I was definitely anxious about it but I do not regret going for it. It is indeed a big tourist trap yet it was quite unique but not unpleasant. You need to not be self-conscious and comfortable to be surrounded by locals staring at your own silliness, to be massaged by a man or be washed butt naked in a lake to remove the mud (no one can see through under the water - or I think so). I do recommend to go in the afternoon, less crowded, we almost had the mud bath to ourselves and indeed plan the cash for the tips (give as you want but indeed it is expected for each person helping you but it was not as aggressive as depicted in some reviews and part of the experience).
