Itinerary

The Alabaster Mosque at the Citadel of Salah el-Din is the most famous—and most significant—mosque in the city of Cairo. And while it still serves as a place of worship, travelers of all faiths are welcome at this limestone monument overlooking urban streets. Your expert local guide takes you through the mosque and explains the basic beliefs of Islam as you explore the grounds.

Next, head to the Khan el Khalili bazaar, to learn about the famous market that serves as a hub for local culture and commerce. Wander the lively maze of stalls and wonder at the souvenirs and local goods sold by Cairo’s finest craftsmen.

Once you’ve had your fill of the market, continue on to the Mosque and Madrassa (school) of Sultan Hassan. This impressive structure was constructed between 1356 and 1363. Your guide highlights its unique Mamluk architecture and explains why it remains one of the finest examples of this style in the city. Mosque and Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is one of the largest in the Islamic world, making it an essential stop on any tour of Cairo.

Since this is a private tour, you can determine the amount of time spent at each of the sites. Interested travelers can also visit the Papyrus Institute to see how this ancient artwork is made and purchase genuine papyrus items. Inform your guide if you’d prefer to skip this stop.

We loved this tour! My mom wears a knee brace and the guide was very respectful of this. He offered to help her if she saw her struggling with any stairs. The guide and driver were extremely accommodating, especially at the end when we said we wanted to find a good jewelry shop. They both stayed beyond the listed hours to make sure that we were comfortable and had a good experience. We were also able to visit an additional mosque. The guide had excellent English and could answer all of our questions, as well as give an accurate historical portrayal of the sites visited. He seemed passionate about sharing his Egyptian culture with us.

Our tour guide Mohammed was the best. He was so knowledgeable, friendly and super accommodating. He gave so much explanation, but not too much to where you get bored. He had the imam at the mosque to a prayer for us..it was amazing. He was willing to modify schedule to include lunch and took us to great restaurant in the market. I completely recommend this tour.

Punctual pick-up. Very impressive buildings. Our guide explained a lot about how to live and behave as a Muslim which was quite interesting. The bazaar these days has a lot of imported products from China but still worth spending 20minutes there. Optional visits to papyrus and perfume shop with presentations which we liked. Don't forget to bargain hard.

The tour was ok. If you're interested about visiting mosque this is the place to see. The same tour guide we had on our tour for Coptic Cairo, the hanging church, we have to wait again for him for few minutes, gave us the history of the place and then he just let us explore the place, take pictures and waited for us outside.you only need couple of hours to complete this trip.

The sites visited were of historical and cultural importance, and the guide was accurate and very informative in his descriptions. Much, much better than many previous tour guides on other excursions. He also accommodated very well what I really wanted to see, and did not need to see. I cannot recommend him too highly.

Excellent tour. Our tour guide was Mohamed Atef Ahmed. He did an excellent job of taking time to explain each location, its history, and asked us what more we wanted to know about each location. He knew the best locations to take pictures and which vendors were good to shop at. When it came time to drop us off at the airport, he went in and found our gate and where we could something to eat. He then even walked us back up to the airport terminal, helping us with our bags. I would highly recommend Mohamed to anyone wanting to see Cairo.

We learned so much about Islamic beliefs on this tour. My husband and I now have a deep respect. Thanks to our Egyptologist guide Ahmed Kamal who not only served as our guide but our teacher as well.

I had the most wonderful guide, he was asking me the entire time if I am still satisfied, if I want to hear more, if I want to go to the loo, if I'm thirsty, I can defnitely recommend this tour.

The mosque is impressive, but we didn't consider this tour good value. The visit was very short. If it was supposed to have been combined with something else, we didn't see it.

Our overall manager, from South Sinai Travel, was Remon, who was excellent. Our guide was a woman called Hanan, who did a great job. Everything went smoothly from start to finish, and was most enjoyable.

This was a very informative tour with an excellent guide and a very reliable tour company. Since my time in Cairo was limited, this tour enabled me to gain insights into the history and architecture of old Islamic Cairo. The Cairo tours are really good for those whose time is limited and enable one to see a lot of important sights without wasting time working out public transportation.

Not all of Egypt is ancient, though it may still be a thousand years old. Visting more contemporary sites puts things in perspective.

The mosques were a great start to our holiday in Cairo. They were a BEAUTIFUL sight and there was so much to learn and be inquisitive about. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, flexible and accommodating and we were able to swop a few things to make our days there more enjoyable. We had a lovley driver and they were both ON TIME. Great and efficient pick-up drop-off service.

Shane W, Nov 2009
When our tour guide met us, we asked to not spend too much time viewing the mosques, as our main interest was the Khan el-Khalili Bazaar. Our guide spent more time than we wanted at the mosques, and a Papyrus Institute, and a perfume factory, which we did want to go to. We did all these first, and the bazaar was the last place we went, and we only got to spend about 1 hour there, at most. Also, we seemed to transverse Cairo twice to go the these places and appeared to waste some time travelling. There was no cohesion about grouping the different places together. Having said all that, our guide did go past the allotted time by at least an hour so we could go to the bazaar. He asked us what we wanted to buy and took us straight to 2 shops. The goods did not turn out to be what they appeared. We were looking for sterling silver, but after we got home, we found out it was only silver plate. We were very disappointed to say the least. We went over our allotted time, so I offered to pay our guide extra, but to his credit he refused. Overall, we had a good time, but more attention needed to be paid to our request.

Not only were the sights terrific, but the company was very attentive, called me the night before my tour to confirm the arrangements, and arrived early at my hotel to pick me up. I had a private one-on-one tour, and the tour guide was absolutely fantastic and very knowledgeable.

Awesome having your own guide. Our guide explained the Islamic faith in very easy to understand details and linked it to other faiths. It was extremely interesting. At the Bazaar, he explained what we were to expect and cautioned us on how to be safe and how to negotiate prices. Afterwards, we had tea and sheesha at an outside cafe. He even found some children books for a friend back home. We couldn't have had a better time.

Awesome having your own guide. Our guide was an expert on egyptian and islamic culture, and she was great helping us negotiate at some of the shops. We did all of the "tour" portions first, and then went to the Bazaar which is very much like going to a mexican marketplace - EVERYTHING is negotiated.

The structures and history were very interesting but the guide's explanation of the fundamentals of the Islamic religion made the tour meaningful and memorable.
